Alexander Blaikley (1816-1904). ‘The Passing Smile’. a portrait of Princess Alexandra. signed, inscribed with title and dated 1863 in pencil bottom left. pastel and pencil. oval, 67 x 49cm. The authenticity of this portrait is confirmed by The Hon. Mrs Roberts, Curator of the Print Room at The Royal Collection Trust. On 10th March 1863 Princess Alexandra married the future King Edward VII. Alexander Blaikley obtained from her Lady-in-Waiting a photograph of the Princess and when the day arrived for public entry into London he took a good window on the route and caught her expression as her carriage went by. The bonnet was a gift to the Princess from Queen Victoria and there is a watercolour in Portsmouth Museum of The Prince and Princess receiving an address from the Mayor in which the Princess is seen wearing the bonnet and blue velvet Dolman trimmed with fur shown in the present lot.

D UNIV (1917-1999) PORTRAIT OF THE COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF EDINBURGH CASTLE signed and dated '44 pastel on board unframed 56cm x 39cm Note:During the Second World War Morocco served with the 51st Highland Division. Upon Italy joining the war he was sent to Edinburgh Castle together with other soldiers of non-UK origin where he spent three and a half years painting in his spare time.
