Alexander Blaikley (1816-1904). ‘The Passing Smile’. a portrait of Princess Alexandra. signed, inscribed with title and dated 1863 in pencil bottom left. pastel and pencil. oval, 67 x 49cm. The authenticity of this portrait is confirmed by The Hon. Mrs Roberts, Curator of the Print Room at The Royal Collection Trust. On 10th March 1863 Princess Alexandra married the future King Edward VII. Alexander Blaikley obtained from her Lady-in-Waiting a photograph of the Princess and when the day arrived for public entry into London he took a good window on the route and caught her expression as her carriage went by. The bonnet was a gift to the Princess from Queen Victoria and there is a watercolour in Portsmouth Museum of The Prince and Princess receiving an address from the Mayor in which the Princess is seen wearing the bonnet and blue velvet Dolman trimmed with fur shown in the present lot.
A Langley Ware jardiniere and stand with dark blue bands and pastel coloured scrolling foliage on a cream ground 71cm high overall; together with a Crown Devon Fieldings jardiniere with flower swags on a blush ivory ground 40cm diameter; and a Crown Derby ware jardiniere in the Imari palette with scalloped rim 26.5cm diameter (4)
