ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN RAPHAEL SMITH (1751-1812). Portrait of a Lady, traditionally identified as Elizabeth Edwards, seated half-length, wearing a white dress, a coastal shore with a distant ship beyond, pastel, on paper laid down on backing card, 13 x 10in. Provenance: The sitter's Family, by descentThe sitter is believed to be Betty Bonninge who married Charles Edwards in Taunton in 1781. She had been baptised there in 1759The reverse bears a twentieth century inscription (over an earlier one) attached to the backboard which states 'Mrs Charles H. Edwards, nee Elizabeth Bonninge, mother of the late Thomas Howard Edwards of Madeira, the sitter died together with her husband (Charles H. Edwards) - a west Indian merchant, of yellow fever whilst on a visit to the West Indies in 1785.The inscription further notes that the sitter was the eldest of three sisters 'all great beauties'. The inscription also amusingly outlines a story of how the three' Bonninge' 'sisters had been walking in The Mall, when one of them boxed the Duke of York's ears for his rudeness in peering under her bonnet when passing by with the then Prince of Wales (afterwards George 1V), upon which he said 'I thought to find an Angel but found a Devil'.For a comparable portrait by Raphael Smith with stylistic similarities cf. Evelyn De Morgan (1855-1919) Study for the head of an angel for ‘The Red Cross’ Pastel and chalk on brown paper, c.1916 30.1 x 20.6cm; 11¾ x 8in Provenance: The artist's sketchbook; Hartnoll & Eyre, London, 1970 Exhibited: London, Hartnoll & Eyre Ltd, Evelyn De Morgan 1855-1919, February 1970, no.22 The present work is a study for Evelyn De Morgan’s The Red Cross (De Morgan Collection, Barnsley), considered to be one of her most successful works on the theme of war. The painting shows Christ surrounded by a choir of angels, and the sketch offered here is a study for the face of the angel on the lower left. In the final composition De Morgan changed the angel’s hair colour to blond, perhaps to contrast more effectively with Christ’s red robes. The present work stands as a testament to both De Morgan’s exceptional artistic skill and her profound response to the upheavals of war. In the context of her broader body of work, particularly her symbolic exploration of the Boer Wars and later, the First World War, this drawing assumes a pivotal role. It encapsulates the essence of De Morgan's commitment to using art as a powerful medium for social commentary, expressing the emotional and spiritual toll of conflict. As a preparatory study for a larger wartime composition, this drawing serves as a snapshot into the artist's creative process, underscoring her dedication to conveying the human experience amidst the turbulence of war with both technical prowess and heartfelt conviction. We are grateful to Sarah Hardy, Director of the De Morgan Museum, for her assistance cataloguing the present work
