λ Neville Lytton (British 1879-1951) Portrait of Helen Wills Pastel and chalk Signed lower left 46 x 39cm (18 x 15¼ in.)Helen Newington Wills (October 6, 1905 - January 1, 1998) was an American tennis player, world famous for being the number one player in women's tennis for over nine years (1927-33, 1935 and 1938). Over the course of her career Wills won 31 Grand Slam titles including 19 singles titles. Her record of eight wins at Wimbledon was not surpassed until 1990 when Martina Navratilova won her ninth title at the competition. Unusually for the time, Wills would practice against men, making her a formidable opponent against her female competitors. She was also one of the first women players to play in the shorter and more fashionable knee-length pleated skirts. As a global celebrity, Wills counted both royalty and film stars amongst her friends.

Lots 275-277The following three lots are a collection of studies of King Charles spaniels, by Neville Stephen Bulwer-Lytton, 3rd Earl of Lytton, and his first wife, The Hon. Mrs Neville Lytton, later Baroness Wentworth. Lytton was an artist and noted athlete - winning a bronze at the 1908 Olympics. Lady Wentworth as she is best known, inherited the Crabbet Arabian Stud in Sussex from her mother Lady Ann Blunt and went on to have a huge influence on horse breeding in the first half of the 20th century. Over 90% of Arabian horses today can trace their pedigree through Crabbet lines. In addition, Lady Wentworth was a noted breeder of King Charles spaniels.
