An 18th century 'musical' bracket clock, 18cm arched brass dial inscribed Hugh Pannel, Allerton, Roman and subsidiary Arabic numerals, date aperture, twin winding holes, eight-day movement with verge escapement and formerly striking on six bells, the backplate with engraved border, the associated mahogany caddy top case with brass carrying handle and carved with a shaped pendant frieze, bracket feet, 40cm highHugh Pannell was born in 1721, son of Robert Pannell, a farmer, and was apprenticed 1735-1742, after which he set up in business in the village. He moved to Northallerton [sic] between 1750 and 1756, when he married. Despite being recognized as a good quality maker, he also ran a pub in the town, both of which were taken over and run by his son Joshua when he died in 1788.
