They were first cousins who married in London in 1740. Richard ASTELL was the son of William ASTELL (1672-1741), a London timber merchant by Mary BAGNALL (1686-1753). Sarah BAGNALL was the daughter of John BAGNALL (1678-1742) gentleman of London by Hannah KENNET (1737-1807) formerly of Bradford Yorkshire. The blazon: gules, a lion passant per pale or and argent between four crosses crosslet of the last (Astell) - impaling - ermine, two bars or, overall a lion rampant azure (Bagnall) crest: a cross crosslet or, entwined with a serpent vert (Astell) Condition Report: Caddy - Maker's mark to obscured, rest are clear. The cover appears to be unmarked. Cover fits well. Wobbles. Engraving is crisp.Basket - Marks lightly rubbed. Stands well. Engraving crisp. A silver caddy of bombe outline, Sheffield 1912 maker H W for Lee & Wigfull (Henry Wigfull). 273 grams. CONDITION REPORT: This silver caddy stands firmly on its four feet. It is stable. The lid opens and closes smoothly on its hinge. There are no losses to this item. There are elements of denting. This is noticeable on the bulbous right-hand side panel. There is also a significant 0.5 cm dent on the upper front of the caddy. Other very small indentations also apparent. The lid fits well.
A George III satinwood and crossbanded tea caddy, with lead lined interior. Height 12 cm, width 12 cm, depth 9.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The caddy is in original, unrestored condition but does have some minor issues. The top is flat with no splits. The crossbanded edge has minor nibbles to the veneers and sections of the boxwood strung edge missing (+/- 65%). The front top left-hand corner of the lid has veneer losses as does the rear of the lid. The side, back and front panels are in generally good condition with the exception of minor losses to the crossbanding and more extensive losses to the boxwood stringing at the edges. There is no lid to the interior but we do not believe that there ever was one. The satinwood banding to the upper edge of the interior top has losses to the rear section around the hinges and a split. The interior is later lined with silver coloured paper. The lock is present and we have the key.

Two Worcester 'Exotic Birds' tea canisters, lacking coverscirca 1765-70of ovoid form, with gros and scale blue grounds, the smaller example further featuring gilt reserved panels of butterflies and other insects, underglaze blue fret mark, 12.5cm and 14.5cm high (2)Taller caddy - fully but quite sympathetically restored. The original damage is still visible to the interior, it has previously been broken into several pieces and put back together. One section of damage has also been patched. Under UV light, the exterior looks quite dull - it has had the dark blue ground colour matched throughout and the gilding touched up at the same time. It has been done to a professional standard and would be hard to notice without looking inside.The second caddy is in good condition with no damages or repairs. A few minor scratches to the painted panels.
