A William IV red calf, covered work box, rectangular with a caddy top, the canted top with stamped decoration in the form of anthemia, opening to reveal a fitted interior with a set of 4 mother-of-pearl cotton reels, in the form of flower heads, with a similar pair and another two odd examples, with a a calf-bound pin flannel, another mother-of-pearl pin flannel, a white metal thimble and a nail guard, a mother-of-pearl waxer and a pair of scissors and stiletto and other sewing related items including two 19th century hand decorated thread 'envelopes', a pair of mother-of-pearl silk winders, with a further three, some minor damage and missing some original fittings, 28cm wide x 20.5cm deep x 13cm high, with key (qty)Generally ok, but missing much of the original contents and many items associated.Work box - old patinated scuffs and wear, especially back left corner and with scratches, dents and a 6cm hailine 'tear' down base of left side. Two feet crumpled slightly.Contents - lacking some items, including one original pin flannel and another on the front 'board' (possibly a nail buffer?). Some items chipped, including one cotton reel and one silk winder and one of the pair of silk winders.
A Regency mahogany, sarcophagus form tea caddy, inlaid with boxwood and ebony stringing and lozenge-form motifs with dot and tulip flower terminals, with brass lion's mask and ring handles, raised on a shaped plinth, some minor damage and losses, 32cm wide x 18cm deep x 19.5cm highLacking mixing/sugar bowl. Liners of canisters worn.Damage - including lacking 5cm of ebony stringing on rectangular pad on lid and lower section of left foot.Minor restoration, including apron (5cm on left side of front later), back right foot and small isolated sections of inlay, including stringing on left vertical edge of the front.
A late 17th century ebonised bracket clock by Jacobus Hassenius, LondiniSurmounted by a twin-dolphin handle on the caddy top over a narrow moulded cornice, rectangular glazed apertures to a moulded base and block feet, the 6.5in square brass dial with winged cherubs head spandrels and silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring, the matted centre with engraved flower spray, the twin-fusee movement with five knopped pillars and engraved back plate, striking on a bell, 31cm high.Jacobus Hessenius was a Russian watchmaker who was made a Free Brother of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1682-3. It is thought that he returned to Russia in circa 1697, the same year that Peter The Great arrived in London to study the craft of shipbuilding and the latest developments in science and technology, returning to the motherland with an army of experienced craftsmen in tow. There he built a powerful navy, as was his aim to ramp up his empire-building capabilities. Without doubt, Hassenius' experience of working in London would have been highly valuable to the Tsar, more than likely obliging him to return to his homeland.Case: General light wear, signs of age and small repairs including fine split to left end of front door sound hole; splits to lower corner of right hand side; small section of cornice in-filled at the back right side; Fine splits to rear door; fine splits to left hand side. Section of veneer missing from lower right base.Dial: Minor signs of age including very fine cracklure to numerals visible under strong light.Movement: Winds, sets, runs and strikes during inspection - not tested for timekeeping or longevity.
A George III ebonised brass mounted bracket clockThe dial and movement signed Thos W'm Hay, Shrewsbury, the rectangular case with moulded swept caddy top with ball finial and four conforming finials to the corners, the front with foliate pierced sound grills to either side of the arched door, the sides with similar pierced grills below brass carrying handles, the arched brass dial with Slow/Fast subsidiary dial, all set within foliate scrolling spandrels, the brass four pillar twin fusee movement with engraved backplate striking on two bells, with brass bob pendulum, 52.5cm high.Generally good overall with some marks, scratches and wear to the case, especially localised on the front left side where it has been opened for winding and setting. The silk inserts behind the fretwork soundboards may have been replaced. One retaining bolt has been replaced on the right side. No evidence of worm. Movement winds, runs and strikes - not tested for timekeeping or longevity.
A circular copper money box, initialled 'P', 12cm diameter, a copper cigarette box decorated circular laurels, 8cm high x 12cm wide and a brass tea caddy, 11cm high CONDITION REPORT: There are surface scratches throughout, some deeper ones also. Green oxide deposits present, speckles of white paint to lid of one box, some discolouration and marks also. Slightly misshapen in parts.
