A Regency pole screen with a shaped face screen containing a fascinating perspective rendering of a cluttered desk top with a Regency tea caddy, gilded calf bound volumes, quills and cutters, sealing wax, inkwell and a deliberately torn £5 note from the Bank of Northamptonshire. The book in the middle is the opening ballad to Richard Bloomfield's Rural Ballads (1802) "Richard and Kate; or Fair Day. A Suffolk Ballad." The author wrote in his preface "the stanzas containing Richard's speech to his sons and daughters (illustrated here) always pleased me best of any in the ballad" and "wrote themselves (when I) began to think of the pleasure of an old couple meeting their grown up children."The artist's message here appears to be one of love and family first regardless of financia circumstance. * Provenance: Stephen Long collection. Height 152cm Width 54cm Depth 36cm.
