A vintage leather picnic case by or for W Thornhill & Co. 144 New Bond Street London, containing four plated plates, two large sandwich boxes, two sets of plated cutlery, two decanters with beaker stoppers, a leather-topped glass beaker, two plated salt spoons and cylindrical cruets and small rectangular fall front box, stamped to top "D. ST. G. D.", the case with flapped satche type compartment at the back and leather carrying handle, 44 cm wide x 17 cm deep x 26 cm high CONDITION REPORTS Outer case with much wear and tear conducive with age and use, surface scratching, denting, discolouration etc. Whilst basically sound, there is a need for some sympathetic restoration, particularly to the hinge and some of the stitching to the sides and to the rip on the back pocket. The straps to the front are very worn and cracked. The decanters, whilst basically in good condition, have a chip to one stopper/cup. The horn and leather cups appear basically sound though with wear and tear conducive with age and use. The cutlery pockets are basically sound though again with wear and tear conducive with age and use. The knives, forks and spoons ditto. There is one extra wooden handled skyline knife in one of the vacant pockets and one pocket unused i.e. something missing. The spoons to the front flap are non matching. The cylindrical pepper container top is stiff/fixed. The salt lid is damaged - see images for detail. The central jar container is sound but the jar itself has a plated lid stuck to the interior of the leather beaker. The base of the beaker has a plated container which has some damage and corrosion. Beneath this compartment is another plated tea caddy with gilt washed interior which has much wear and tear conducive with age and use - see images. The four plates all have scratch marks again conducive with age and use. The inner lid has a loop which is missing an implement - see images for further detail. Additional information - the two leather cup covers are approx. 6 cm high and internal diameter is approx. 6.4 cm. The horn cups - diameter at the top is 6.6 cm, diameter at the bottom is 4.7 cm x 7.5 cm high on one and on the other diameter at the top is 6.5 cm, diameter at the bottom is 5 cm x 7.4 cm high.

The property of a British Army officer tea / companion set including burner, kettle, tea caddy, butter dish, corkscrew, lighter etc, all housed in a black leather case (37 x 21 x 19cm) initialled to WG, AG 1876 - 1926. This was discovered amongst the possessions of Lt Col CW Grover who was commissioned into the 2nd Battalion The King's Own in 1899 and fought in the Boer War including Spion Kop, Tugela Heights and WW1, where he was wounded at Le Cateau and made POW at the second battle of Ypres. This lot has been consigned by a family member.
