Original vintage alcohol drink advertising poster for Scotch Ale issued by Wm Younger Co Ltd Brewers in Edinburgh featuring a great cartoon by George E. Studdy (George Ernest Studdy; 1878-1948) of a young golf caddy holding up a collapsed smiling golfer holding a broken golf club in one hand and drinking a pint of Scotch Ale with the other, with his hat, the frothing bottle and his smoking pipe lying on the green near a rabbit looking out from a hole at the man and his broken golf club above a sand bunker, the poem below reading: When you’re completely off your stroke, Or when your favourite club you’ve broke, Pray use no phrases sanguinary, Just drink Scotch Ale and do no not worry. The William Younger Company Brewery was founded in Edinburgh in 1778 in the grounds of Holyrood Abbey by Archibald Campbell Younger; the company was registered in 1887 and was producing a quarter of all Scotland's beers by the 1900s; in 1986 the Holyrood Brewery complex closed (now the Scottish Parliament building), and in 2017 the brand was sold to Marston's Brewery. Scotch Ale is a type of beer that refers to a strong pale ale produced in Edinburgh Scotland. Fair condition, paper browned, staining on margins, small restored paper loss in margin. An early 19th century mahogany eight day longcase clock - the hood with caddy top with central glazed panel and brass stop-fluted columns, over an arched trunk door and panelled base, the bell strike movement fronted by a painted Roman dial with gilt painted leafy scroll spandrels and arch, subsidiary seconds at 12 and arched date aperture at 6, with brass cased lead weights, pendulum and winder, requires some restoration, 233 cm high.
A mid-18th century 30-hour weight-driven longcase clock by Giles Bennett of Malmesbury - the bell-strike movement with four knopped pillars, fronted by a square brass dial signed to the Roman chapter ring and engraved to the centre with flowers, foliage and a seated squirrel 'seated' on the chamfered date aperture, an Arabic subsidiary dial at 12, with gilt-brass floral and leafy scroll spandrels, with a single lead weight and brass and lead pendulum, the oak case with ogee moulded caddy top on parcel-gilt three-quarter columns, over a plain trunk and base with later stained pine bracket foot plinth, probably reduced in height, 206 cm high. * Giles Bennett is recorded in G H Baillie, 'Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World' as working in Malmesbury from 1752 to 1766.
