Blue and white dish cracked piece out. Bowls smashed. Armorial saucer cracked.
A mid-19th century fine papier-mâché tea caddy by Jennens & Bettridge (stamped to underside): the dome-topped hinged lid decorated with faux tortoiseshell and gilt scrolling foliage; the interior with two faux tortoiseshell and gilt-decorated covers over original partitions with tin lining; the waisted body similarly decorated and with canted corners leading to outset scrolling-style feet (24.5 cm wide to tips of feet x 14 cm high)There is rubbing on the gilding on the lid, the front gilding around the escutcheon and other areas commensurate with age. The lid sits very flat upon the top and opens to reveal a very nice interior. The lids reveal original tin lining, the hinges are good. Good underneath, it is noted that one small triple match-head sized piece is away from the edge of the foot to the underside. Overall good general condition.
An early 19th Century tortoiseshell and ivory line inlaid tea caddy of octagonal form, the hinged pagoda shaped top with turned ball shaped finial, height 14cm, width 11cm and depth 7.5cm, some later repairs, S/D. NB - 2018 Ivory Act application submission reference D87XU6DK. Subject to CITES regulations and due to the tortoiseshell and ivory content of the tea caddy, this lot will require a re-export permit if shipped outside the mainland UK.
An Arts & Crafts copper and brass mounted hinge-lidded tea caddy of square tapering form with domed decoration to the top, the hinged lid opening to reveal a mahogany lined interior, 25 cm wide x 11 cm high, together with a further Arts & Crafts box with hinged lid, the finial as a flower and unusual locking mechanism, key not present, 16 cm wide x 10 cm high CONDITION REPORTS Tea caddy: the hinge pin is coming out on one side, the other end the hinge is rising up from the main body. General wear and tear, surface scratches, knocks, bumps etc all conducive with age and use. Appears to have been lacquered to the base. The interior lining has been patched at one end and there is crazing to the varnish on the lining to the interior. The other box: the lid has been knocked on all of its corners with the corners therefore being bent. Remnants of cleaning fluid and surface scratches. The interior locking mechanism appears to have been replaced or repaired at some point with bad soldering joints to the interior. Locking mechanism also appears to be missing something. There are holes front and back and a tube to the main body of the lid, however there is nothing to secure it. Also appears to be some kind of spring within the lid but nothing to turn, the finial does not turn. Wear and tear conducive with age and use to include surface scratches, bumps, verdigris etc - see images for more detail
