Japanese chinoiserie box with engraved interior lining. Japanese chinoiserie box or tea caddy, the black lacquered body with gilded decoration depicting tableaus of daily life in a village. The hinged lid opens to reveal a symmetrical gilded wheatsheaf motif above an internal engraved metal lid for the inner metal caddy liner. A George III figured walnut and ebony strung tea caddy, the lid and body with fruitwood parquetry inlaid border, with brass hinges and diamond shape bone escutcheon, opening to reveal a single compartment interior with divots for sectional dividers, with yellow pigment to the lid and upper section of the interior, no key, 14.7cm x 30.9cm x 15.6cmThe ebony stringing to the lower left footrim of the caddy is lifting away, the lid is slightly warped resulting in a small crack visible to the lower left and upper right corners of the exterior lid, general surface wear and light scratches to the exterior and interior.
