German silver (800) tea caddy of bulbous form with engraved decoration, raised on four feet, 13cm high Condition report: Weight approximately 8oz. It is not a particularly heavy gauge. There are some overall minor dents and ripples. Light wear to engraved decoration but overall a sound piece.
A gilt painted wirework magazine rack, 54 cm high x 42 cm x 17 deep, an oak spherical tea caddy, 14 cm high, and a parquetry inlaid beechwood circular Lazy Susan, 5 cm high x 30 cm diameter. CONDITION REPORT: The magazine rack is worn to highlights whilst the other two items are in reasonably good condition.
A George III figured mahogany rectangular tea caddy, inlaid with boxwood stringing and banding, the top with silver plated oval handle. 16 cm high x 30 cm wide x 15 cm deep. CONDITION REPORT: This caddy externally is slightly faded and has minor chipping. Internally the caddy is lacking the two canisters and mixing bowl.
A Victorian black papier mache rectangular tea caddy, of shaped outline, the top inset with mother of pearl and decorated with leaves, fitted with two lidded compartments. 12 cm high x 19.5 cm wide x 13 cm deep. CONDITION REPORT: The tea caddy has slight damage as is typical with papier mache items. There is a repair to the left hinge to the lid, some cracking, a glued repair to the lid and small chips including to the front right foot.
A Victorian silver caddy spoon by H.J. Lias & Son 1867, together with a Victorian silver serviette ring Birmingham 1876, three matched silver teaspoons, a Victorian silver fork, a silver butter knife, two matched silver condiment spoons, a silver preserve spoons with pierced trefoil and a silver three tine fork with mother of pearl handle.
A silver caddy spoon, two decanter labels, two small pillboxes and a Madeira label. CONDITION REPORT: The caddy spoon is in good condition with some minor wear to the marks. The two pill boxes are in good condition with some fine scratching to the top and edges. The two decanter labels are in good condition with some tarnishing and fine scratching. The Madeira label has fine scratching but is generally in good condition.
Eight George III and later silver caddy spoons by John Bettridge, displaying various styles and patterns, all with Birmingham assay marks and hallmarked between the dates 1793-1830, together with one other silver caddy spoon by Cocks & Bettridge with pierced rim, Birmingham 1804 (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The spoons in this lot are all in good condition commensurate with age (some of them exhibit minor wear and very minor dents e.g. to the underside terminal of the thistle patterned spoon). Four or them bear engraved initials to terminals. The spoon with Kings pattern style terminal and oval bowl has evidence of solder between the terminal, the bowl but this may be part of the original manufacturing process and not evidence of a repair.
Nine George III silver caddy spoons by Joseph Taylor, displaying different styles and patterns, all with Birmingham assay marks and hallmarked for the years 1794-1798 (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: Six of the spoons in this lot are in good condition commensurate with age, with one of these spoons bearing engraved initials to terminal. The remaining three spoons all bear very slight denting to them as follows- The oval leaf spoon with engraved veins (as opposed to the other leaf spoon with cast veins) has slight denting to the tip of the leaf, the jockey cap spoon has slight denting to the sides of the brim whilst the remaining spoon which is an oval pierced bowl example has very slight denting to each side of the bowl.
Two George III silver leaf form caddy spoons by Matthew Linwood, Birmingham 1807 and 1808. CONDITION REPORT: The two spoons in this lot are lovely examples of the Silversmiths art and are in good condition and clearly hallmarked. The spoon with the veined bowl on a chastened ground possibly has very slight creasing to the forward right hand edge but may be part of the original design. Both spoons are engraved with initials to terminals.
Three George III silver leaf form caddy spoons by Matthew Linwood, with scrolled terminals, Birmingham 1804-1807. CONDITION REPORT: The oval spoon with plain rim may have originally been gilded to bowl as there is yellow residue between the embossed veins. The other two spoons are crisp and in excellent condition and all three are clearly hallmarked.
A George III silver gilt leaf form caddy spoon by Matthew Linwood, with scrolled terminal, Birmingham 1808, another silver and silver gilt leaf form caddy spoon by Matthew Linwood together with a William IV silver gilt leaf form caddy spoon by John Wilkinson, Birmingham 1832. CONDITION REPORT: The oval silver gilt leaf spoon by Linwood features an open mouthed serpent pattern terminal. Apart from slight gilding loss to the underside tip of the bowl, a small area of loss to the underside rear of the bowl and some gilding loss to the underside of the terminal. The spoon is largely in good condition. The other Linwood spoon has been gilded only to the upper side of the bowl and this gilding is exhibiting wear to the raised areas of the veins. There is also a crack between the bowl and the terminal. The underside of the spoon is not gilded. The John Wilkinson spoon has some gilding loss to the upper side of the bowl in the area of the veins to centre. All three spoons are clearly hallmarked.
Two late 18th/early 19th century white metal mounted shell caddy spoons, the mount by Matthew Linwood, the fiddle pattern terminals with impressed makers mark but not hallmarked. CONDITION REPORT: These two spoons are both clearly marked for Matthew Linwood but do not bear any other hallmarks. The spoon with cowrie type shell is in good condition with no chips or cracks to the shell bowl and no splitting or damage to the mounts. The terminal is engraved with a single letter S. The whelk type shell pattern spoon as a hairline crack running vertically from the rear edge of the mount. This crack appears to be stable but is present and extends to the base of the bowl. The mount itself appears to be in good condition with a few small minor dents in places but no splitting or repairs are apparent. The terminal is plain with a single engraved thread around the edge.
Eleven George III and later silver caddy spoons by Matthew Linwood, displaying different patterns and styles, all hallmarked for Birmingham and marked for dates 1809-1818 (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: Six of these spoons are in good condition commensurate with age (slight wear and very minor scuffing apparent in places). The remaining five spoons all have minor condition issues as follows - spoon with engraved tear shaped bowl has a dented tip, spoon with oval engraved bowl of crucifix design is slightly creased to the bowl, spoon with heart shaped bowl has a repair to the join between bowl and terminal, spoon with circular engraved bowl and serpent pattern handle has a slightly misshaped bowl, spoon with circular bowl with concentric rings and laurel wreath also has slightly misshapen bowl. All spoons are clearly hallmarked and seven bear engraved initials.
A pair of William IV silver gilt fiddle pattern caddy spoons with embossed leaf bowls by William Bateman, London 1834. CONDITION REPORT: This pair of spoons are of pleasing design but both do have some gilding loss particularly to the terminals and both are slightly dented and misshapen to the bowls. The hallmarks are clear but the makers marks are rather feint but legible.
A George III silver mounted shell caddy spoon, with Kings pattern terminal, hallmarked for London 1814, together with an 18th century white metal mounted shell caddy spoon, the fiddle pattern terminal with with indistinct makers mark and engraved with initials DMA. CONDITION REPORT: The George III Kings pattern terminal spoon with the mussel shell type bowl bears makers mark for Thomas Phipps, Edward Robinson and James Phipps. The bowl itself is in good condition with no chips or cracks whilst the mount similarly appears to be in good condition. Hallmarks are legible. The cowrie shell style spoon is in good overall condition, the bowl having no chips or cracks and the mount itself being in good order. The front of the terminal is engraved with the initials DMA whilst the reverse terminal bears a makers mark of GK which is slightly rubbed but may relate to George Knight who was registered March 1818.
