OWEN ROBERT: (1771-1858) British Social Reformer. A.L.S., Mr. Owen, in the third person, three pages, folio, Hotel d`Angleterre, Paris, 26th July 1837, to the President, Director and Secretary of the Society Francaise de Statistique Universalle, thanking them for the honor conferred upon him with the presentation of a medal the previous evening. Owen states that he accepted the medal `as a mark of the kindness of the Society to a stranger coming to Paris who proposes to ameliorate the conditions of the human race by a change to be affected without creating violence, injustice or evil of any kind` and continues `...for nearly fifty years he has been deeply interested in the general statistics of the world & especially in those of Great Britain, Ireland & the United States of North America, that during the same period he has been actively & alternatively engaged in the departments of producing wealth & in its distribution, in education, or forming the character from infancy to maturity, & in the immediate government of considerable masses of population` further adding that his experience and learning has allowed him to form `a machine with new powers physical & mental which is capable of being made to perform, with the least manual labour & most pleasure, all the business of human life much better than heretofore it has ever been executed & at the same time, most beneficially for every individual in every country` and offering to present his ideas in more detail to the Society. Accompanied by the original envelope, hand addressed and signed (`Robert Owen`) by the reformer. Housed in an attractive presentation folder. A scarce and interesting "Royal Naval Air Service Kite Balloon Training Manual 1917", profusely illustrated with drawings, plans and 38 full page photographic plates, the back cover having a pocket containing linen backed folding diagrams for M type balloon and "Drachen" balloon (2); together with a framed photograph of Sub Lieutenant W Adams RNAS, in uniform, with section of cap tally of HMS Lion below and name of Edinburgh photographers; 2 small Stationery Office note books, one with the name W Adams on the cover and containing hand drawn silhouettes of British and German warships, the other containing notes relating to operating balloons and making observations, sketches, etc; another framed photograph, of a kite balloon being tethered from the aeroplane deck of HMS Lion, with HMS Princess Royal astern; and 9 small sepia photographs of German warships, presumably taken after the surrender of the German fleet, identified on the back in pencil. GC. A most interesting lot. Note: The HMS Lion cap tally is silk woven rather than gold wire, apparently this dates it to late 1918 to 1921.
