A TIBETAN MEDICAL CHART, 17TH-18TH CENTURYTibet. Distemper on cloth. Painted with anatomical diagrams, inscribed and labeled in Tibetan script, a row of figures of lamas wearing red and orange robes and striking various poses along the top, a mantra inscribed in large red characters to the reverse.Condition: Extensive wear, soiling, losses, fading to colors, creases. Provenance: British private collection. Dimensions: 72 x 46 cmThe fundamental text of Tibetan medicine is the Tantra of Secret Instructions on the Eight Branches, the Essence of the Elixir of Immortality and commonly abridged as Four Tantras. These tantras are not four separate treatises but the same medical doctrine from four perspectives. The 'Root Tantra' encompasses the teachings of Bhaisajyaguru and the origins of diagnosis and treatment. The 'Exegetical Tantra' covers aspects as diverse as anatomy, physiology, diet, and herbology. The 'Instructional Tantra' serves as a manual for techniques and diagnosis while the 'Subsequent Tantra' builds on the former adding pulse techniques, divination, demonic possession and urinalysis. The paintings are an extension of the Four Tantras appearing as part of the commentary written by Sangye Gyamtso, Regent to the Fifth Dalai Lama, in 1687-88, and entitled The Blue Beryl. Sangye Gyamtso was entrusted by the Fifth Dalai Lama to codify the histories and traditions in medicine from the various schools of Tibetan Buddhism into one centralized source. The first set of 62 medical paintings appeared in 1688. The publication of The Blue Beryl later resulted in Regent Sangye Gyamtso's founding of the Chagpori College of medicine in 1696 on the Iron Hill adjacent to the Potala Palace. Literature comparison: For an in-depth discussion of Tibetan medical practice and further illustrations, see A. Aris (ed.), Tibetan Medical Paintings: Illustrations to the Blue Beryl Treatise of Sangye Gyamtso (1653-1705), 1992. A 1936 Mercedes 170v Cabriolet 1700ccRegistration No. 710 XUBChassis No. 152795Engine No. 2421In red and black with cream leather upholstery and cloth roof.Two-door four-seater version. Odometer 23503The Mercedes Benz W136 was the company's line on in-line 4 cylinder motor cars from the mid-1930s and into the 1950s. The model 170v made its public debut in February 1936. Between 1936 and 1939 it was Mercedes' top-selling model, and by 1942 over 75,000 were built. The 1.7litre four-cylinder rear wheel drive was introduced in 1936, to replace the 1.7litre six-cylinder Mercedes 170 (W15); despite their similar engine capacities, the new cars side valve M136 was more powerful. The manual transmission was four-speed synchromesh, having been upgraded from synchromesh in only the top two ratios in 1940. The claimed maximum power was 37hp, with mileage of approx 25mpg. There were various bodywork options with this example being two-door cabriolet saloon. This example has been owned by the vendor for the last 15 years, and has undergone a full restoration by the vendor to include engine rebuild with post-war aluminium head, post-war synchromesh gearbox, repainted in red and black, new hood with hood cover when down, and re-trim. Driven in and in good running order.Sold with V5 only.IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING THE SALE OF CARS & MOTORCYCLES IN THIS AUCTIONCondition report:All leather with some discolouration and marks, small tear to drivers seat.Chrome generally very good and complete, but would benefit from a good polish.Paint generally very good, slight cracking to leading edge of bonnet.Paint loss to rear of one headlamp.Paint loss to door corner and where hood joins windscreen.Cover for soft top included. No service history for car as it has been fully restored and maintained by the owner himself.
1938 MG VA 1½ two door 4 seat open tourerReg No. JMC154Car No. VA1369 Engine No. TPBG1632Dark Red with Red interior, Black Hood and Black Side screensOdometer 88625The MG VA, or MG 1½-litre as it was originally marketed, was produced by MG between February 1937 and September 1939 and was the smallest of the three sports saloons they produced in the late 1930s, the others being the SA and WA.The car used a tuned version of the push-rod, 1548cc overhead valve four-cylinder Morris TPBG type engine that was also fitted to the Wolseley 12/48 and Morris Twelve series III. The MG version had twin SU carburettors and developed 54 bhp at 4500 rpm. Drive was to the live rear axle via a four-speed manual gearbox with synchromesh on the top three ratios. Nineteen-inch wire wheels were fitted, and the 10-inch drum brakes were hydraulically operated using a Lockheed system. In-built hydraulic jacks were standard. Suspension was by half-elliptic springs all round with a live rear axle and beam front axle. Luvax shock absorbers were fitted, the rear ones adjustable from the dashboard. There were only 2,407 VA’s of all body types produced prior to production ending which ensures that these vehicles today remain rare and collectable. This car was purchased by the late deceased owner in April 2001, unfortunately no history is available although it saw regular use up until his death, no record of expenditure can be found. From the DVLA records the last pass MOT recorded was on the 28/06/2007 at a mileage of 88,118.This rare tourer presents in a sound and solid condition, having had fresh fuel and a new battery the car started instantly. It is difficult to say what restoration has been undertaken in the past however, it would appear that little extra work would be required to bring this to an excellent condition. It should be noted that the hood would benefit with replacement along with fresh carpeting to the interior.Sold with V5.IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING THE SALE OF CARS & MOTORCYCLES IN THIS AUCTIONCondition report: From a local deceased estate.Car runs well, although will need recommissioning as has stood for approx 2.5 years.Body and structure very good, however paintwork now showing some wear. Some panels are suffering from micro-blistering.Paint loss to bulkhead.Small chips to front of near-side wing and inside of bumper.Interior with age wear but complete - damage to edges only.Hood would need replacing.Carpets are worn and with some moth damage.Chrome generally good, with some modest tarnishing in places including to lamps.Interior panels very good.Instrument panel complete but showing some age wear.
A 1966 Jaguar 3.4 S type Manual + o/dReg No. LUW 411DChassis No. P1B5635DNEngine No. 7B8199-8Grey Metallic with Black leather interiorOdometer 70,689 milesThe Jaguar S-type was introduced in 1963 and was an updated version of the MKII Jaguar saloon utilising the central section of the body with new front and rear styling. The front incorporated a four lamp layout, the lower two are in board close to the central grille. The rear wings were extended in a similar style to the MK10 Jaguar. Importantly, the new floor pan layout provided for independent rear suspension which superseded the leaf sprung of the MKII.The S-type was produced from September 1963 through to July 1968 and was replaced by the short lived 420 before the introduction of the all new XJ6.This particular car was first registered on the 27th July 1966, fitted with desirable manual gearbox plus optional overdrive and power steering and painted wire wheels. The car has also been retrofitted with central locking. It appears to have had bodywork restoration in 2004, there are invoices for parts and services in the history file. The current owner has owned this vehicle for 10 years, minimal mileage has been accrued during this time as can be seen from the DVLA on line MOT history which run till April 2018, a total mileage increase of only 8,000 miles to date. This sale comes as a result of the owners health. The car appears to be in good mechanical condition, it would however benefit from some cosmetic attention. The car comes with a folder of invoices dating back to 1997, the original steering wheel is also with car should originality be required.IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING THE SALE OF CARS & MOTORCYCLES IN THIS AUCTIONCondition report:Runs well and was driven in.Gearbox good.Fuel dirty as it has stood for a year and is spluttering at present.
1972 Lotus Europa Twin CamReg No. NMF2LChassis No. 72031465PBlack with Black interior (originally Lotus Yellow)Odometer 36533Lotus Europa’s were produced between 1996 and 1975, a total of 9,230 being made. They used a backbone chassis and lightweight fibreglass body which was fully bonded to the chassis for additional strength. The mounting of the engine and gearbox behind the cabin allowed for the main chassis member to run straight forward to intersect a large box-section cross-beam running across the car between the front suspension points. At the rear, the chassis split into a "U" shape to accommodate combined engine, transmission and final-drive components and to support the rear suspension. The first models used powertrains from Renault’s 16, the Twin Cam using the Lotus/Ford unit of 1588cc.This Lotus is definitely a “barn find”, found blocked up on three wheels with a new brake master cylinder in place but not connected to the pedal nor system fluid replaced. However, with fuel drained and refreshed, with the aid of a jump connection the engine fired and once cleared runs with good oil pressure.Clearly, recommissioning work will be required to return this iconic sports car to the road but this could be achieved quickly and inexpensively or alternatively be an ideal candidate for a full restoration. There is a full Lotus workshop manual with the car along with sundry bills and receipts.Sold with V5.IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING THE SALE OF CARS & MOTORCYCLES IN THIS AUCTIONCondition report: Fibreglass body is generally sound, but with some gel coat delamination commensurate with age.Chassis condition unknown, but car dry has been dry stored for many years.Brightwork generally very good but requires a clean.Rear bumper lightly corroded.Car runs with reasonable oil pressure.Gearbox functions, drives through all gears. No hydraulic brakes due to replacement master cylinder fitted, but not reconnected to foot pedal and requires bleeding.Battery is dead.Interior generally good but tired.Drivers electric window not working. Both doors dropped slightly on hinges.
A 1953 MG TD MidgetReg No. TSJ966Chassis No. TD27729Engine No. N519236Colour. Green with Beige interior, Tan hood and side screensOdometer. 31,267The MG TD was introduced in 1949 to replace the TC model which was really a continuation of the pre-war TB. The new TD model was based upon the new MG Y-type chassis, shortened by 5 inches. The major change with this new design was the incorporation of independent coil sprung front suspension.Following the success of the TC Midget which sold in large numbers to Commonwealth countries and more surprisingly to the USA market, the TD continued with this success but by 1953 this design was becoming outdated by new modern designs. The MG factory was well on the way to designing the sleek and modern looking MGA, however, senior management within BMC insisted that other marques within the group should get investment for new models first. The result of this decision meant that MG brought out the MG TF model with built in headlights as a stop gap model. This MG TD Midget comes from a local private collection having been purchased by our vendor in 2008. During this time approximately 4,000 miles have been added to the odometer, mostly enjoyed on outings with the MG Car Club. There is history on file which includes a certificate from the MG Octagon Car Club stating this car was built in the 3rd week of May 1953.Major works were undertaken by an earlier owner between 2001 and 2002 for which there are invoices on file. These include major engine rebuild including fitment of new big end bearings, new pistons, rebuilt skimmed cylinder head to lead free conversion including new valves, guides, valve seats, valve springs etc.Further work then included rebuild of brakes, steering and other sundry work.It is not known when this vehicle was last given a major body refurbishment but clearly the structure appears to be in good condition. The paintwork has suffered from micro blistering in certain areas and both rear wings and running boards would benefit from refurbishment. The car comes with current V5c, workshop manual and side screens, old MOT’s.IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING THE SALE OF CARS & MOTORCYCLES IN THIS AUCTION
A 9ct white gold and diamond Cocktail Watch, early 20th century, manual wind, the silver dial with black Arabic numerals, the case and shoulders set with small brilliant cut round diamonds, the bracelet similarly set, total diamond weight approximately 1.5ct, gross weight 19.5g, in Collingwood (Jewellers) Ltd red leather and velvet presentation case, the inner lid marked 'Jewellers by Appointment To Her Majesty The Queen'.
A 1937 Morris 8 series 1 Motor Car Registration No. COY 216 first registered on the 19th March 1937. Chassis No. S1/E 136088, a reconditioned engine Serial No. B74738 was apparently fitted in 1955, when she was eighteen. She is very attractively finished in blue and black and these vehicles had a surprisingly economical 4 cylinder side-valve petrol engine of about 918 cc capacity, although the documents curiously refer to a cubic capacity of 885 cc. Write-ups refer to economy in the region of 44 M.P.G. This series 1 car with the attractive honeycomb grill is in lovely condition physically and mechanically having been the subject of comprehensive restoration work with many new parts and she runs like a watch having excellent oil pressure and starting on the button whether hot or cold. She has a new S.U. carburettor and fuel pump as well as new tyres all round including the spare. She is classified as an Historic Vehicle, as such requiring to be road taxed but this is free of charge and she is not subject to the requirement of M.O.T. testing. Insurance for historic vehicles is available from specialist insurance companies at very reasonable premiums. As well as the V5C(W) registration document, there are three old brown and one green log-books present detailing ownerships and regular road taxing (starting at 5 Guineas!). The first owner was a Percy Newman Hyde of Purley, Surrey, then on the 18 June, 1945 she was registered to Nellie Winifred Wotton of South Croydon, going back into the name of the original owner a week later on the 23 June,1945. He continued to own and use the car it being taxed variously at Purley, Wallington, Surrey and Croydon. From the 6 September, 1962 the owner was a Richard Graham Byers of Wallington. On 20 May, 1963 the owner registered is a David Nigel House of Beddington, Croydon, then from 7 September,1964?, a Patrick Robin Jay of Paddock Wood, Kent. On 6 July, 1970 ownership passed to a Terence Alan Collins of High Halden, Ashford, Kent, then on 9 August, 1971 to a Walter Wayne Harrison of Maidstone Kent who moved to Aspley Guise, Bletchley, Bucks. From 24 April, 1972 she was in the ownership of a David Roy Ellis of Woburn Wild Animal Kingdom, Bedfordshire. On 22 January, 1973 she became registered to an Alan John Stafford of Renaold, Bedfordshire who moved to Brickhill, Bedfordshire. A gap in the ownership details then exists, the next recorded owner being a Mrs. Clare Edwards of Ludlow who acquired the car on the 17 September, 2010 the current Abergavenny based owner acquiring the car on the 12 December, 2010. He has thoroughly enjoyed his time with the car but now wishes to pursue other interests. We were very much looking forward to driving the car to our sale-rooms but due to being sorn'd, we resorted to trailering her but she behaved faultlessly during our photo session and whilst moving her in and out of covered storage at the sale-rooms. All in all an economical motor car with four-wheel braking eager to attend rallies and road runs now that such may commence once more. Included with her are: An "Operation Manual for the Morris Eight Series 1" (1936), a 1960 hard-bound volume "Car Maintenance Series Morris Cars (models from 1934)", a Pitman's Motorist's Library - "The Book of the Morris Eight and The Morris Minor", an invaluable book to the owner "The Morris Eight (Series E) Workshop Manual", and a card-back volume entitled "Fifty Years of Motoring", 1960, a fascinating book with numerous illustrations of motor cars through the years. Please also look out for the following lots including many Morris Eight Spares, as well as the owner's workshop tools. ****N.B. The Buyer's Premium on this Lot will be 10% + VAT (Total 12%). If purchased via the saleroom.com an additional 5% + VAT will be added 18% TOTAL.****
