WWI German intelligence manual on British Indian Army Published in German in Nov 1915 in Lille France by the AOK 6 (Armeeoberkommando = Hqs. 6thArmy) and signed off by the command’s intelligence officer Lubecke. Softcover wrapper 8 by 5.5 ins 37 pp glossy stock with 8 b&w photo plates (printed on one side only) and a folded map at the back. Condition: Some foxing to wrapper and scattered light pencil underlining in text. Binding is tight; there are no loose or unsightly pages; overall very good condition considering age and use as a field manual in a war zone. This manual which good authority holds to be very scarce contains background information photographs foreign language specimens a condensed dictionary and similar material intended to assist in the interrogation of Indian Army POWs captured by the Germans on the Western Front in France during the First World War. Key subjects mentioned in the test include: The 3rd (Lahore) and the 7th (Meerut) Divisions; the Indian Cavalry Division the Ferlsipur Brigade and its component regiments the Djallandar Brigade and its Sikh regiment; the 1st Manchester Regiment (multi-national) among many other units contributing forces to the Allied front. The manual describes the native soldiers of whom an estimated 160 000 fought in France and Belgium objectively and with knowledgeable respect for their training and fighting ability. It encourages German soldiers to treat their captives well “as they can be of good use to us in the present and the future” (p23). There is a reference to the POW camp at Zossen – Wünsdorf near Berlin where thousands of British Indian troops were imprisoned.
