Houffalize etait un carrefour situe a un lieu strategique sur les rives de l’Ourthe, au cœur des Ardennes, au sud de Liege et juste au nord de Bastogne. Les troupes allemandes ont occupe la ville entre le 20 decembre 1944 et le 16 janvier 1945. Les avions allies l’ont bombarde a de multiples reprises. Markings on the box ,Torn Eb., Markings on the lid ,Torn Eb Empfanger., Manual is missing. All moving parts are functional. Plaque marked ,Torn Eb 20339 44,, with traces of the eagle WAA visible. This item comes from Houffalize, a French-speaking town in Belgium located in the Walloon region in the province of Luxembourg. Houffalize was a strategic crossroads on the banks of the Ourthe River, located in the heart of the Ardennes, south of Liege and just north of Bastogne. German troops occupied the town from December 20, 1944, to January 16, 1945. Allied planes bombed it multiple times. In total, 189 civilians were killed, and 350 homes were destroyed. Note the wear and oxidation on the parts. Condition II+.

Elle comporte une indication manuscrite au nom de ,Byers, a la peinture rouge et une mention gravee CPL Byers. c est un modele de regle pour Howitzer, c est a dire pour obusier d artillerie. Cette piece est datee du 28 avril 1942. Elle a ete donnee par le veteran a l historien William C. Cavanagh. On y joint egalement une tres interessante cassette audio moderne relatant l historique de RH Beyers, un livet American Red Cross Map of Paris, date fevrier 1945 lui ayant appartenu et un manuel TM20-230 Logarithmic Trigonometric and Mathematical tables for artillery, date octobre 1944 et comportant son nom sur la page de garde, S/SGT Richard H Byers C Btry 371 FABN 99th Inf Div ASN 35523280, Un TM 9-524, 12 inch Graphical Firing Tables, date du 8 novembre 1944. Une lettre tapuscrite de Richard H Byers a Cavanagh indique qu il a bien utilise ce materiel pendant son service lors de la seconde guerre mondiale et notamment en Belgique. Recuperee en dotation en 1943, Byers explique longuement dans son courrier le mode d utilisation de cette regle. Cette piece a ete donnee par le veteran a l historien anglo belge William C Cavanagh qui est un specialiste reconnu de la bataille des Ardennes et dont les publications font references dans le domaine. Interessant souvenir historique provenant directement du veteran et comportant son histoire qui replace cet objet dans le contexte de celle ci. La 99eme DI americaine a joue un role majeur dans la bataille des Ardennes. Il se livrerent avec autant de courage que de tenacite a des combats acharnes, notamment a Krinelt. Cette division etait surnommee Battle Babies ou Checkerboard. A noter une certaine usure et patine des pieces. Etat II+. Artillery Rule of American Soldier Richard H. Byers. Wooden rule with numerous markings for artillery firing calculations. It bears a handwritten indication of the name Byers in red paint and an engraved mention CPL Byers. This is a model of rule for Howitzer, that is, for artillery howitzers. The piece is dated April 28, 1942. It was given by the veteran to historian William C. Cavanagh. Also included is a very interesting modern audio cassette recounting the history of Richard H. Byers, an American Red Cross Map of Paris booklet, dated February 1945, which belonged to him, and a TM20-230 manual, Logarithmic Trigonometric and Mathematical Tables for Artillery, dated October 1944, bearing his name on the front page, S/SGT Richard H. Byers, C Btry 371 FABN 99th Inf Div ASN 35523280. Additionally, a TM 9-524 manual, 12 Inch Graphical Firing Tables, dated November 8, 1944, is included. A typed letter from Richard H. Byers to Cavanagh states that he indeed used this equipment during his service in World War II, notably in Belgium. Retrieved in 1943, Byers explains in detail in his letter how to use the rule. This piece was donated by the veteran to Anglo-Belgian historian William C. Cavanagh, a recognized specialist in the Battle of the Bulge, whose publications are considered authoritative in the field. An interesting historical artifact directly from the veteran, with his story placing the item within its context. The 99th Infantry Division played a major role in the Battle of the Bulge. They fought with as much courage as tenacity in fierce battles, particularly in Krinkelt. This division was nicknamed the Battle Babies or Checkerboard. Notable wear and patina on the pieces. Condition II+.
