One of the most immaculately presented and meticulously restored Tommi Mäkinens we’ve ever seen. Launched at the peak of rally mania, Mitsubishi experienced huge success in Lancer Evolution sales, reportedly selling 6,000 Evolution IVs in the first three days of its launch! The 1996 WRC season brought Mitsubishi its first World Rally Championship drivers' title, with thanks to a blisteringly quick driver named Tommi Mäkinen. In quick succession, the Lancer Evolution VI came to be and in the latter-half of 1999, Mitsubishi unleashed a special edition to celebrate its favourite driver's four consecutive WRC drivers' titles from 1996-1999; the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI 'Tommi Mäkinen Edition' (TME). The Evolution VI was already a technological tour de force but the TME came equipped with a more responsive titanium turbocharger, uprated and lowered suspension, quicker steering, an upgraded exhaust, a new ECU, beefed-up transfer case internals, a redesigned front bumper for improved cooling and authentic 17" WRC Enkei alloy wheels. The interior featured embossed Recaro seats, a MOMO steering wheel and red stitching. The performance upgrades saw 0-60mph despatched in 4.4 seconds and a maximum top speed of 150mph. Power was rumoured to be north of 300bhp, rather than the 276bhp 'Gentlemans' Agreement'.Widely regarded as the finest Lancer to wear the Evolution badge, it was available in five colours, with Passion Red and Canal Blue joining Scotia White, Pyrenean Black and Satellite Silver. Due to the popularity of early imported cars, especially when imported by RALLIART like this one, the UK was allocated 50 numbered examples in Passion Red. According to Mitsubishi, it was these Passion Red cars that automatically received the renowned racing decals known as a 'Special Colour Package' (SCP), meaning that these examples were factory-fitted with black door handles to not break the line of the long profile decal. On offer here is an extremely early RALLIART-imported car before the 50 numbered cars were decided upon. This is one of the infamous 212 red special colour package (SCP) vehicles confirmed by its SNGF2 VIN plate. Within the history file, there is a document showing the car was imported by RALLIART with an original Bill of Sale and the original English service books and records showing its full service history by Mitsubishi and Mitsubishi specialists. In 2007, at 48,000 miles, the car was purchased by the previous owner who, in 2015, undertook the most phenomenal restoration, with bills and invoices for work undertaken on file well in excess of £30,000.The car was totally stripped back to a bare shell, acid-dipped and all metal that required it was repaired, including replacing the entire floorpan with a genuine Mitsubishi replacement. The shell was epoxy-primed and the underside was then given an additional treatment of Raptor stone chip. Under the bonnet, virtually every component, nut and bolt was stripped, cleaned and painted including zinc-plating the bolts and painting the engine. The wheels were also stripped and powder-coated with the rear lights and front side lights converted to LED.This car features almost every conceivable RALLIART upgrade and extra, as well as having benefited from some upgrades over its life with some non-standard parts that are described in the online listing such as the Scorpion stainless steel exhaust system. Under the bonnet are some 'unobtanium' elements that enhance the engine bay, including bespoke RALLIART pipework, slam panel, spark plug cover and strut brace (front and rear). The full specification is on our website. The car is very well known within the world of TME enthusiasts and owners groups, being such a highly respected restoration and undeniably OEM+. Our vendor is a JDM collector who exclusively looks for best of the best examples, and this Tommi Mäkinen undoubtedly qualifies, however to make room for the next JDM addition, it is time to move it on. Without a doubt one of, if not the, finest condition Tommi Mäkinen we've seen and your inspection is highly recommended and encouraged.Specification list: Engine Standard engine internals. A simply superb Hellbronze Metallic 911SC Targa, benefiting from an extensive restoration and engine rebuild in the past and substantial recent expenditure.   In 1978, Porsche introduced their latest development of the 911, christened the 911 SC, with the 'SC' standing for Super Carrera. Powered by a 3-litre, six-cylinder engine with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel-injection and a 5-speed 915 manual transmission, power output initially was 180bhp, subsequently 188bhp and finally, in 1981, it was increased to a heady 204bhp. The SC Targa was also launched in the same year and by the end of production in 1983, some 15,682 Targas had been delivered worldwide. The wonderful example we present here is known to us, having sold it to our fastidious vendor some years ago. At the time, it had recently been meticulously restored at considerable cost, with new sills, kidney bowls, jacking points, front wings and driver’s door by Norfolk Premier Coachworks, as well as an extensive engine rebuild by Redtech Engineering at a cost of over £10,000. Fitted with a 'Whale Tail', air dam and Fuchs alloys, it has real presence. Our vendor had wanted to acquire the very best Porsche of its type at the time and bid enthusiastically to do so but, as is often the case, he then set about making it even better with the emphasis on presenting the car as close as possible to its original specification. The suspension has since been updated, the wheels and tyres replaced, even the teardrop mirrors fitted at the time of purchase have been replaced by the original-style paddle type. Most noticeable however, is the interior which has been fully retrimmed in the correct 'Pasha' style with tan leather and brown and beige Pasha velour by ProtoTrim. The experienced team at Export 56 have carried out all of the recent servicing and restoration work and our vendor's investments with them over the years are as follows; 2019 - £4,300, 2020 - £1,600, 2021 - £3,200, 2022 - .£8,000, 2024 - £2,900.Since his purchase in 2018, our vendor has averaged about a 1,000 miles a year and the current indicated mileage is just over 124,156. When not in use, the Targa is cossetted in a dehumidified facility (Auto Classica Storage). The fascinating history file contains receipts totalling over £30,000 for work in the past and recently, and in addition the car is supplied with its Porsche CoA, MOTs and Tax Discs going back to 1994, the current V5C, the original book pack and service records, a photographic record of the restoration, the current MOT valid until 4th April 2025 (although now an Historic Vehicle) and much more. With Porsche classics in most guises having stood up well to the vagaries of the market in recent times, we would not be surprised at all to see this wonderful example create a flurry of bidding once more within our saleroom.                                                                Specification Make: PORSCHE Model: 911SC TARGA Year: 1982 Chassis Number: WP0ZZZ91ZCS141326 Registration Number: GAT 911Y Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 63C3737 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 124156 Miles Make: RHDClick here for more details and images

The perennially popular Mk1 Mexico, something of a cult car, here in striking Sebring Red and restored for an avid Blue Oval enthusiast. It seems likely that Ford already had plans to produce a high performance Escort to fit in the range between the 1300GT and the Twin-Cam/RS1600, but their victory in the World Cup Rally finishing in Mexico provided an ideal platform to launch such a model. The engineers at the newly formed AVO (Advanced Vehicles Operations) quickly developed the 'Mexico', marrying the Type 49 bodyshell, as used in the Twin-Cam and RS1600, with the 1,600cc Kent 'crossflow' engine and 2000E gearbox. So effectively, the Mexico was basically a re-engined Twin-Cam/RS1600. The Mexico became AVO's most successful and numerous of the Rally Sport Escorts and had a number of advantages on the road in that it had excellent performance, was easy to maintain, relatively easy to insure and above all, it was great to drive, something which is still true today. The car presented here is a 1974 Ford Escort Mk1 Mexico in 'oh-so-'70s' Sebring Red paintwork. This historic Fast Ford has the chassis number BFATPU00330, with the PU prefix confirming an AVO build date of June 1974. We are informed that the car still features its original Kent engine with number PU00330, adorned by its factory-spec airbox which is always a treat. The car was first registered on 4th October 1974, the delay between the two dates being attributed to the demand for the Mexico cooling-off once the RS2000 was launched in July 1973. With its seven former keepers no doubt having enjoyed the charms of this little Mexico between 1974 and 2009, its last owner acquired the Escort in October 2009. At this point, he embarked on a thorough professional restoration which was carefully documented, both with written notes and accompanying photographs. This diligent process resulted in the car we see offered here for sale, remaining in the same enthusiastic and knowledgeable ownership until only recently, when he sadly passed away. With only a nod to some personal touches, the clearer-to-see speedometer and period bullet-style wing mirrors, this Mexico still stands up very well and would be a pleasure to own for any aficionado of the Blue Oval. Iconic Auctioneers have sold similar era Mk1 RS2000s for in excess of £100,000, so this Mexico, with much money and time invested, offers a tempting opportunity to own one of Ford's most sought after classics.Specification Make: FORD Model: ESCORT MK1 MEXICO Year: 1974 Chassis Number: BFATPU00330 Registration Number: GKE 28N Transmission: Manual Engine Number: PU00330 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Make: RHDClick here for more details and images

Rare GT Junior from the last year of production in a great colour, much enjoyed during 18 years long term ownership and recently refreshed. Alfa Romeo 105/115 Series Coupés were built from 1963 until 1977 and were the successors to the celebrated Giulietta Sprint Coupé, utilising the shortened floorpan from the Giulia saloon car. The basic body shape, shared by all models, was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro for Bertone as one of his first major projects and is regarded as one of his finest commercial efforts. The balance of glass and metal, the influence of the front and rear screens on the shape of the cabin and the flat grille with incorporated headlamps were all considered groundbreaking styling features of the era. Apart from their good looks, these cars are often considered as some of the best handling classic saloons and with a 5-speed gearbox, all round disc brakes, independent suspension and torquey engine, they were very advanced for the time and have the capability to embarrass many of their modern counterparts.First registered in 1977 and one of the last examples to be registered in the UK, this particular 1600 Junior was comprehensively restored in 2012 and has been used and enjoyed by the present owner since 2006, some 18 years. For much of that time it's been used as a daily driver and needed to be 'on the button' and ready to go when and wherever required, so further in-depth recommissioning was carried out in 2022 to keep ahead of any deterioration.Presenting superbly, this matching numbers Junior is finished in Blu Olandese (323) with a contrasting tan hide interior and we are told is in excellent condition throughout both bodily and mechanically with a detailed pre-sale check to be carried out prior to being offered at Race Retro. With an original ‘on the road’ figure of £3,517, a not inconsiderable sum at the time, these vehicles attracted dedicated buyers, an ethos which has continued over the years with this particular example having had just four custodians in total, all of which have clearly maintained the little Alfa as required with invoices from respected specialists including Ian Ellis Alfa and Fostering Classics featuring in the car's comprehensive history file. Alongside the original stamped service book there are numerous tax discs, previous MOT certificates and two framed Alfa Romeo Owners Club Concours awards from the 1990’s.The GT 1600 Junior had the lowest production of the Tipo 105 Series Coupés and when combined with being one of the last few UK cars and finished in an unusual colour, this is a rare car. A perfect opportunity to take custody of one of the most handsome 2+2 Coupés of the 1970s that will provide ‘classic’ family motoring for years to come. Your early inspection is welcomed and encouraged.Specification Make: ALFA ROMEO Model: 1600 JUNIOR Year: 1977 Chassis Number: 0001721 Registration Number: XBT 49R Transmission: Manual Engine Number: TBC Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 116798 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: Tan HideClick here for more details and images

Lot 650

One for the Blue Oval connoisseur, highly original, lots of provenance and a condition to warrant a place on the show field or in the concours arena. A Mk1 Mexico at its best. The car presented here is a UK-supplied 1972 Ford Escort Mk1 Mexico, correctly finished in Sunset Red with white stripes and currently owned by one of the foremost Ford collectors and experts in the UK. This is as good as you’d want any Mexico to be. Built in May 1972 at Ford’s AVO factory in Aveley, it was supplied by Ford Rallye Sport dealer, Broadspeed Ltd of Leamington Spa, to a Mr C.G. Blake at a total cost of £1,199 including seatbelts and Ziebart protection and first registered on 14th June 1972.With just four former keepers since, all of them Ford enthusiasts including the AVO Owners Club RS1600 Registrar, William Arnold, for 13 years, there is much provenance to back up its condition. An accompanying comprehensive history file contains two large booklets spanning the entire life of the car from the initial Order Form in 1972 through to the latest service using Ford Motocraft items in July 2024. There are also historic MOT Certificates, the original service book, maintenance invoices and many AVO Club Valuations, including an early one from Mexico Registrar, Andy Percival, for £2,750. Also present are many photos of the meticulous restoration carried out in the late 1990s, which is also magazine-featured and is a testament to how well the car presents today over two decades later. Such was the standard that, when completed in April 2000 and on the cars first outing to AVO National Day, it achieved a third in class and was invited onto the AVO Club Stand at the Classic & Sports Car NEC Show in November 2000.Resplendent in one of the three original launch colours, Sunset Red (Code J), this early production L-specification example retains all the correct period details (such as the rear stone deflector held in by eight bolts in the boot floor and strengthened AVO workmanship). Panel fit is excellent, many still protected by the Ziebart rust protection applied when new and the rear arches are correctly rolled. The lens units are FoMoCo and the front Carello headlamps are protected by clear dome covers. The contrasting Mexico stickers are in fantastic condition, promoting the iconic rally look, with all glass being the genuine Ford Triplex items including the front screen.Inside displays the correct Black PVC upholstery (Code AA), as fitted to ‘L’-specification early cars. Fitted with the factory 140mph speedometer and 8,000rpm rev counter, all gauges, controls and switches are fully operational. The original black one-piece rubber floor mat is also present and in excellent condition. The boot area has the early Mexico’s battery-in-boot setup, meaning the spare wheel is mounted to the boot floor. The boot mat is original and incredibly, the rear cardboard boot spring protector is present along with black light protectors undamaged. The jack and wheel brace are within the original fawn muslin bag held down by the correct rubber band.Under the bonnet resides the matching numbers four-cylinder 1600 GT crossflow engine with the 711M block, quoted in the sales brochure at 86bhp, offering 100mph with little effort and 0-60 in under 11 seconds. Correct specification throughout from the AC oval metal airbox finished in silver to the Weber 32/36 DGV-FA carburettor will also please marque enthusiasts. The top-plate reveals the chassis number and the original VIN plate and AVO ID plate remain fixed to the slam panel.Fitted with the correct pressed steel wheels with the cooling slots measuring 5.5 x 13" and immaculate chrome hubcaps and a matching set of Goodyear GT Sport 175/70 R13. The remote servo-assisted brakes powered by the early Girling Powerstop AHV 550 Mk2A help grip the front discs and the rear drums more than adequately.Interest in Performance Fords from the 1970s and 1980s shows no signs of abating and this remarkable Sunset Red Mexico would be an asset to any enthusiast of these era-defining, characterful, sporting Fords.Specification Make: FORD Model: ESCORT MK1 MEXICO Year: 1972 Chassis Number: BFATMC00089 Registration Number: HAC 522K Transmission: Manual Engine Number: MC00089 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Make: RHDClick here for more details and images

Lot 602

Beautifully presented early-production 4.2-litre Mk1 benefiting from substantial recent expenditure including a cosmetic restoration, offered without Reserve. Designed in part by renowned American car designer and racer Carroll Shelby, in an attempt to raise the declining fortunes of the Rootes Group, the Tiger was penned around the popular Sunbeam Alpine bodyshell with V8 motivation in an attempt to compete successfully in world markets where larger capacity engines and sportscar styling were at the forefront of late 1960s motoring. Codenamed 'Thunderbolt', the whole project took place without the knowledge of Lord Rootes and when he found out he got 'very grumpy' by all accounts, although he had the good sense to get a prototype shipped to Coventry and was deeply impressed with the car when it arrived. Shelby had envisaged assembling them in America as he had done with AC Cobras, however Rootes opted to pay him a royalty on each unit and use West Bromwich-based Jensen Motors to build the cars as they had spare capacity having just ceased their Volvo P1800 assembly contract. A total of some 7,085 Sunbeam Tigers were eventually produced, including 536 of the now very rare 4.7-litre Mk2 versions which arrived in 1967. The final cars rolled off the lines in 1968, production being shelved when Chrysler took over the Rootes Group, their new bosses unable to sanction a car powered by their arch-rivals, Ford. The gleaming Calypso Red Mk1 Tiger on offer here dates from 1965 and according to the Sunbeam Tiger Owners Club, was restored in the 1980s prior to spending many years in Cornwall. It was purchased by its previous owner and used to go to shows and as a weekend ‘classic’, covering less than 10,000 miles in his 20 years with the car. We understand it was subject to a bodywork restoration in 2005 and treated to an engine rebuild in 2015 by Sunbeam Specialist Services and Rickets Restorations with the addition of an upgraded aluminium radiator and electric fan.The Sunbeam was purchased in March 2023 by our vendor who is known to be particularly fastidious and although the Tiger ran well and looked good, he immediately commenced a further bodywork restoration with fresh paint, an investment of some £18,000 (full details and invoices on file). To match the car’s new suit of clothes, the black vinyl interior was professionally retrimmed and enhanced with new carpets, a new cloth hood and tonneau cover and when, combined with a number of new chrome parts, over £23,000 was committed to return this classic British V8 roadster to the standard you see today. It has covered less than 80,000 miles from new and we understand runs and drives well. It’s accompanied by its current V5C, old MOTs, the aforementioned invoices and an original workshop manual. There are a couple of active owners clubs for enthusiasts of the marque and it’s believed that there are about 500 Tigers in the UK which is a high survival rate and indicates the esteem in which they are held. This bright red Tiger would have turned a lot of heads as it burbled down the High Street in 1965 and some 60 years later, it has exactly the same effect.Specification Make: SUNBEAM Model: TIGER Year: 1965 Chassis Number: B9472801 Registration Number: FNN 135C Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 3616 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 79279 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: Black VinylClick here for more details and images

An original Cooper S, this Swiftune Madgwick is number four of the ten built, the sole original S reborn and remains in excellent condition - the ultimate Mk 1 Mini? Whilst any Mk 1 Mini Cooper S 1275 is a special thing, when you add the words ‘Nick Swift’ and ‘Swiftune’ to a car’s history, it becomes extra special. Our vendor had been keen to add a good S 1275 to his extensive Collection for some years and having seen the exploits of Nick at Goodwood, knew Swiftune was the company to prepare one for him. They have been building, racing and winning with Minis since Glyn Swift set up shop in 1965. Still run by his family, Swiftune engines have powered just about every winning Mini at Goodwood, including the legendary all-Mini races in 2009 and again in 2019.Coincidentally, they had just launched their Mini Madgwick concept, where they take original standard Mk 1 Minis and create what are effectively S 1275 cars to an enhanced ‘period Cooper’ specification. There is always a question mark around modifying a valuable, period correct, original S 1275, so Swiftune base the Mini Madgwick around standard 850 Mk 1 Minis which are provided by the customer so any earlier modifications are irrelevant. Our vendor's car, DGW, is consequently unique in that it is the only Madgwick car (to date) which started as an original S 1275. Because it was an original car, the decision was taken to retain the matching-numbers engine at 1,275cc as opposed to the 1,330cc normally fitted, however with Swiftune’s many years of experience developing these engines, they managed to extract a reliable 110bhp, a substantial increase over the standard car. Anyone who has watched Nick Swift around Goodwood can confirm that his car’s handling is simply spectacular and this set-up knowledge is evident in the Madgwick where changes to ride height, caster and camber transform what was already a decent handling car. These improvements were demonstrated to our vendor by Nick around the Kent country lanes and apparently it was 'something I will never forget'. We can imagine! DGW had been changed to Almond Green with a white roof at some point in its life, however, the decision was taken to return the car to its original Old English White with a black roof over a beautifully retrimmed Tartan Red/Gold Brocade interior as detailed in the accompanying Heritage Certificate. The little car’s appearance is enhanced by 10" 'Rose Petal' wheels, racing mirrors on bespoke brackets and leather bonnet straps. The odometer indicates a little over 38,000 miles but very few of these have been since the restoration and the car remains in beautiful condition throughout. We understand that DGW has been enjoyed by five former keepers, obviously diligent by the amount of early paperwork, invoices, MOTs etc. in the car’s impressive history file. We invite and encourage your inspection of this rather special Mini Madgwick at our Race Retro Sale and leave the last words to our discerning vendor 'Different cars in my Collection have different purposes. For certain things I take the Gullwing, for others the 1973 RS, but if I want to put a smile on my face, I take the Swiftune Cooper'.Specification Make: MORRIS Model: MINI COOPER Year: 1963 Chassis Number: KA2S4/552892 Registration Number: DGW 397B Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 9F-SA-Y/32021 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 38423 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: Tartan Red/ Gold BrocadeClick here for more details and images

The mighty Metro GTi that broke 21 speed records in 1989, offered to the open market for the first time in 20 years by its long term custodian. At Iconic Auctioneers we do thoroughly enjoy the weird and wonderful and this little Metro manages to seamlessly be both. This is the original, factory-built, high performance Metro, engineered to break various speed endurance records, some un-broken since the 1930s, remaining almost exactly as built by the factory. 'Project Pride' took place ahead of the official launch of the MG Metro GTi at the 1990 British International Motor Show, designed to compete in the 'hot-hatch' market that’s so synonymous with the late 1980s and 1990s. The GTi was a development of the earlier MG Metro Turbo and MG Metro 1300 models, aligning with the shift toward modern fuel-injection systems helping enhance performance and efficiency. This Metro GTi is rather special. It's one of two cars built by MG to take on and contest a number of land speed records, doing so with flying colours. In late 1989, a voluntary team of enthusiastic Rover Group engineers worked with the company management to produce a modified version of the new fuel-injected Metro with the intention of contesting the Class F (1,100cc - 1,300cc) records. They succeeded in increasing the power of the 1,396cc Twin-Cam, K-Series engine from 95bhp to 140bhp, along with a resilient fuel delivery system, a specialist roll cage and a number of other performance variations meaning, in still air, the car was capable of speeds up to 135mph. Some 500 people ended up being involved in the project and 6,500 hours were spent preparing the car to the required level. The project was incredibly well executed and despite achieving all their objectives and some publicity at the time, the teams success appears relatively unknown and has slipped under the radar, until now.Supervised by the RAC, the 24 hour event took place at Millbrook Proving Ground in June 1990 with the two cars continuing to lap the high speed bowl, despite heavy rain as darkness fell, until all 21 Class F records for it had been broken. Within the car's history file is an official list of all the records broken, all impressive, but the final one seems remarkable - 2,911 miles 1,727 yards in exactly 24 hours at an average speed of 121.33mph. This is a genuine figure as the RAC Observers were watching very carefully to ensure the cars were always at least 100 yards apart, precluding slipstreaming.Once the usual competition roll cages had been fitted to the cars by an outside specialist, the cars went to Cowley Body Plant, where the tinsmiths installed the large competition-style fuel fillers on each side (combined flow rate 26 gallons of unleaded in 15 seconds), the large bag tanks and aluminium firewalls. The cut outs made for the installation of the racing petrol fillers were found in the car during recommissioning and those, plus the original exhaust, are included with the car.The car on offer here is the is the only one to survive in its original format and condition following the event. It presents in excellent condition, having covered just 3,356 miles from new. Its state of preservation is commensurate with it being kept in a de-humidified garage for over 20 years and recently mechanically recommissioned using nearly £2,000 worth of consumable parts, including replacement of the four petrol pumps and the brake servo, as well as being freshly MOT’d. With the exception of a new stainless steel exhaust, no changes have been made to the car. It starts easily and runs at tick-over once it is warmed up a little with the petrol pumps performing as the should. This is an outstanding opportunity to own a record breaking MG, a unique piece of motoring history with outstanding performance for a car of its size. A road-going, record breaking 'Works' car at today's guide seems remarkable value.A fascinating 27 minute video on the record breaking process can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqPSaz3Ku2w&ab_channel=Rover200%26400OwnersClubSpecification Make: MG Model: METRO GTI Year: 1989 Chassis Number: SAXXPDNCBAD601064 Registration Number: C138 JWO Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 14K4CE50119009 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 3356 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: Grey ClothClick here for more details and images

A well known historic rally car, built by Kevin Savage - this rare 123GT Coupé is beautifully presented. In 1956, Volvo launched their 120-Series (Amazon) to much acclaim and it was to become one of their most successful, remaining in production until 1970. Starting with the 121 and 122 models, the Amazon soon established itself as a comfortable, reliable and superbly well built car which also introduced new levels of safety equipment, still very much a novelty in the mid-1950s! Understated but beautifully proportioned, the Amazon was designed by Jan Wilsgaard who openly admitted his inspiration came from American cars of the period such as the Chrysler New Yorker and the Chrysler 300C Hardtop Coupé, both of which it closely resembles although in a restrained, Scandinavian sort of way. Immensely rugged and well engineered, many Amazons are still in daily use and have over recent years become popular on the historic rally scene, hardly surprising when you think that stage rallying is part of Volvo’s DNA.Pick of the bunch was undoubtedly the 123GT which was only made between August 1966 and August 1968. Designed to be the sportiest model, the two-door 123GT was powered by the high-compression B18D four-cylinder unit from the P1800 with high-profile cams and revised breathing, resulting in 115bhp compared to the 85bhp of the standard model which, when allied to an all-synchro, 4-speed overdrive gearbox, enabled a top speed of 115mph. Other 123GT features included uprated shock absorbers, special wheel trims, front fog lamps, a dash-top mounted rev counter, reclining seats and an elegant 3-spoke steering wheel. Exact production figures are uncertain but the best estimate seems to be around 1,500 examples with less than 70 believed to still be on the road in the UK.On offer here is a very well presented 123GT dating from 1968 and originally supplied by Worthing-based ‘Rudd’s of Southampton’, famous for their Ruddspeed conversions and sales agents for Volvo, Alfa Romeo and Austin-Healey.Our vendor had always admired Volvo’s rugged Amazon and over the years, they had built a reputation within British club rallying for reliability and always getting to the end, no matter how tough the conditions. He was keen on Classic Regularity rallying and decide that an Amazon would be ideal, with the 123GT being top of the list. Home-market, right-hand drive 123GTs are rare things and he searched for some time before eventually finding the right one through the Owner’s Club.OCR 169F had spent its entire life as a well cared for road car and would obviously have to be converted for a competitive life. Kevin Savage is a name well known in club rally circles in the UK, specifically today for classic rallying, his company KSS Motorsport specialising in rally preparation with Amazons being their model of choice. Having met him on Le Jog and other events, our vendor commissioned KSS to build a car to their specification for classic rallying, which is pretty well what we have today, as various factors have prevented this superb Volvo from being used as planned. Other commitments meant that the scheduled Le Jog in 2023 could not happen, the 2024 event was postponed and our vendor has decided that he will be fully occupied with another project in 2025. The nett result is that this barely used car, which is essentially just run in and fresh from restoration, is ready for someone else to enjoy and at a very sensible estimate.UK rally cars tend to come up for sale at the end of a hard season and in need of substantial work before their next outing but this is different. It’s beautifully presented, well engineered, correctly equipped and properly set-up, needing only a ‘spanner check’ before you submit those entry forms. With Paris-Peking also running this year, OCR could indeed be a ready-made contender! The car is supplied with a substantial history file containing all the correspondence and detailed invoicing from the recent build as well as invoices from previous owners back to the early 1990s. We invite and encourage your inspection of this classic Volvo at our Race Retro Sale.Specification Make: VOLVO Model: AMAZON 123 GT Year: 1968 Chassis Number: 133352P303151 Registration Number: OCR 169F Transmission: Manual Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Make: RHDClick here for more details and images

Lot 517

This very special Chevron B8 (#DBE-54) possesses an irrefutably correct/original identity supported by continuous ownership and race history, Le Mans Classic provenance, a fresh Lester Owen engine and would be very welcome at any prestigious motorsport event.   The hugely successful Chevron B8 first appeared in 1968, usually with BMW 2-litre engines but also with the Ford FVA, FVC and occasionally the Lotus-Climax. It was homologated into FIA 'Group 4' Sports Cars from March 1968 on the basis that 50 were built (reduced to 25 in 1969). To help Chevron Cars achieve the required number (on paper), every rebuild was listed as a new car - a habit that would continue into the B16, B19 and even the B21 and no doubt, was a practice common to other builders of limited production racing cars. In the end, only 44 of the original cars were completed. Often described as one of the greatest racing cars of all time, the B8 was fast, forgiving and delightful. In common with the Lotus Elan and the BMW E30 M3, it was one of those cars that would not punish you for a temporary 'loss of talent' and would quietly sort itself out whilst you were considering 'Plan B'.This particular car, chassis #DBE-54, was delivered new to British club racer, Peter Crossley, in March 1968 and uniquely for a B8, was fitted with a four-cylinder 2-litre Coventry-Climax, the same type of engine that was used in Formula 2 in the early 1960s. The car first raced at Rufforth on March 13th with Peter finishing second in the Yorkshire Evening Post Trophy race. Two days later, he won a Formula Libre race at Croft and the following month at Oulton Park finished second in the Total GT race. After placing second at Oulton Park in June, Peter then raced the B8 in Europe for the rest of the season, taking in events at Vila Real, Hockenheim, Wunstorf, d’Urcy, and at Jyllandsringen for the Danish GP where he finished fourth overall, in what would turn out to be the highlight of his European summer adventure. This was the start of an extensive and successful racing career for DBE-54 which has a well documented, continuous ownership history (see below) – this continuity and subsequent originality is almost unheard of for a 1960s Chevron, making DBE-54 one of only a remaining few examples with such provenance. The following 1969 season, Peter Crossley purchased a Brabham BT8, into which he fitted the Chevron’s Coventry-Climax engine, so consequently the engineless B8 sat unused the following year, except for one outing to Magny-Cours at the end of the season with a BMW 2-litre engine. Peter then put the B8 up for sale and it was bought by Theo Kinsbergen of Stichting Racing of Holland. Sponsored and entered by Team Radio Veronica, Theo took a string of podium finishes as well as winning twice at Zandvoort during the season. Borrowed for one race after crashing his own B16, Rein Zwolsman used DBE-54 to good effect to win the airfield race at Welschap. For the last two events of the season at Zandvoort, the car was rented to Henk Bosman who won both races then agreed to buy the car which he raced the following year, winning four races and finishing second in four others. The B8 was then sold to Frans van Dijk.In early 1981, DBE-54 returned to the UK and was initially purchased by well known historic racer, Steven Langton, who sold the car the following year to Richard Parsons before it subsequently became the property of John Upton. In 1984, John commissioned well known restorer, Simon Hadfield, to restore the B8 and then race it afterwards in three historic events at Snetterton, Brands Hatch and Silverstone. In what were his first ever drives in a Chevron, Simon won all three races. DBE-54 was then sold to Tim Greenhill in 1985 who hired rapid former saloon car pedaller, Tim Goss, to drive the car in the HSCC Historic series. Tim demonstrated his versatility with five class wins and won the class championship. Since then, DBE-54 has been sold on several times but has remained active in historic racing in the hands of Richard Parsons, Michael Kuhn, Stephan Schrauwen, Guy Peeters and then with our vendor since 2017, who has also had class wins racing in Masters across Europe and also raced with Peter Auto in 2018 and 2019.Reassuringly, DBE-54 remains in excellent condition throughout and is sold in race-ready condition although it will be necessary for interested parties to establish the currency and suitability of any safety-related equipment (seats, belts, tank, extinguisher etc.) as it was last run just prior to COVID. The 2-litre BMW engine was rebuilt by specialist Lester Owen in 2020 and is ‘box fresh’ with zero hours running time since, plus its suspension and brakes were rebuilt. It comes with a good spares package (multiple wheels sets, spare bodywork, etc. – the latter will be by collection post-sale) and benefits from valid 2017-issued FIA HTP papers. Also included are extensive racing history files including historic HTPs and period photographs.Interestingly, DBE-54 comes with Belgian road registration documents which is helpful for European events and also make it a great entry for historic road events and rallies around the world. This pedigree Chevron B8 is truly one of the best original examples and is eligible for many historic race events including the Le Mans Classic (where DBE-54 competed in 2006), Masters WSM, CER, etc. where it will continue to be competitive and a welcome entry. Very rarely does historic racing machinery come with this level of provenance, giving a new owner a real sense of custodianship and a tangible link to decades of successful, safe and enjoyable racing. DBE-54 is a special car and is ready to make more history.Ownership History (a detailed racing history is also available on request):1968: Peter Crossley, Sparkford, Somerset, England, UK, raced in UK and Europe (Croft, Oulton Park, Vila Real, Anderstorp, etc.)1971: Theo Kinsbergen, Stichting Racing, Mijdrecht, Netherlands - entered and sponsored by Team Radio Veronica with 1980cc BMW 4C engine, painted red and dark blue, raced in ’71 Dutch championship by Kinsbergen, Zwolsman and Bosman1972: Henk Bosman, Netherlands - sponsored and entered by Team 4711 Sir Irish Moss, painted green, raced in 1972 Dutch championship1972: Frans van Dijk, Netherlands1981: Steven Langton, Lingfield, Surrey, England, UK1982: Richard Parsons, UK1983: John Upton, Valour Racing, UK, raced in Historics in ’84 by Simon Hadfield1985: Tim Greenhill, Berkhamstead, Herts, England, UK, raced in Historics by Tim Goss, five class wins and class championship winner1988: Richard Arnold, Gloucester, England, UK 1997: Michael Kuhn, Germany2000: Jean-Francois Veroux, France2003: Stephan Schrauwen, Belgium2011: Guy Peeters, Belgium2017: present: Frazer Gibney, UKSpecification Make: CHEVRON Model: B8 Year: 1968 Chassis Number: DBE-54 Registration Number: N/A Transmission: Manual Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Make: RHDClick here for more details and images

Escort-based RS1600i superbly prepared by Lavant Garage for Group 1 and presented in iconic Royal Mail 'Datapost' livery. Followers of saloon car racing in the mid-1980s will certainly remember the distinctively presented 'Group A' Datapost RS1600i Escorts prepared by Richard Longman Racing for himself and Alan Curnow. Whether it was the fact that the staid old Post Office had decided to go racing, or the fact that the cars were very competitive, or simply that they were painted Post Office Red and looked great is not clear, but they are well remembered and have been the subject of diecast scale models from half a dozen different companies. The Datapost-liveried Escort on offer here is not one of those early Richard Longman cars but was built to a high standard in the early 2000s from a rust-free shell to RS1600i specification and raced successfully in CTCRC with numerous class wins. It subsequently spent ten years in a heated garage before our vendors instructed classic Ford Escort RS1600i specialists, Lavant Garage in Chichester, to recondition the car and fully prepare it to return to the circuits. All the safety equipment is up to date including a new fire extinguisher with 16 years of life and all correct nozzles and mountings. Most importantly, the list of components renewed or serviced on this RS is exhaustive (full details in the history file) The CVH engine features Accralite forged high-compression pistons, ARP big end bolts, Kent race cam (solid lifters), Vernier cam sprocket, Bosch K Jetronic PI, DTA management, an Ashley 4-1 tubular exhaust manifold, Mocal oil-cooler and Direnza alloy radiator, all of which contribute to a willing and respectable 145bhp. The Quaife 5-speed gearbox is straight-cut with a Motorsport LSD and ZF Sachs paddle-clutch. Much of the drive train and brakes (AP) are new as is most of the fuel system with a high pressure fuel pump, injectors and 25-litre foam-filled tank. All the bearings are new with ZX1 Super Grease and the car is fitted with a race wiring loom and the essential heated screen. This beautifully-presented 1980s 'homologation special' with its period correct livery could be a very cost effective way into some lovely championships, including the HRDC Gerry Marshall Trophy and CTCRC 'Group 1' and is a very rewarding car to drive, after all it has 'Group A' underpinnings. It's been prepared by the best and should represent cost effective and reliable racing for the coming seasons.Specification Make: FORD Model: RS 1600I Year: 1983 Chassis Number: TBA Registration Number: N/A Transmission: Manual Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Make: RHD Interior Colour: RaceClick here for more details and images

A beautifully prepared example of the earliest Morris Minor model currently racing, with Goodwood provenance and welcome anywhere. The ubiquitous Morris Minor arrived in September 1948 as the 918cc side-vale powered ‘Series MM’ and was replaced by a restyled car in September 1950. They have become known by Minor enthusiasts as the ‘Low Light’ and ‘High Light’ respectively.Originally supplied by W Watson and Co, Liverpool in July 1949 as a 'Low Light', this well known Goodwood participant is offered fresh to market by its fastidious owner after it being in his care for the past 12 years, during which time its long standing employment as an historic race car, some 30 years to date, has been continued and enjoyed to the maximum.Well known within the world of Historic Motorsport, SSK 888 is probably best know to the public through its exploits at the Goodwood Revival where it’s been invited five times and raced in the St Marys Trophy, in 2008 driven by the owner and Brian Redman, in 2014 shared with Tony Jardine, in 2017 and 2019 with Rauno Aaltonon and most recently our vendor shared the car with Richard (Dickie) Attwood in the 2021 St Mary's Trophy. Four outings in the Donington Historic yielded a seventh overall in 2019 and the car finished a splendid fourth overall in the 2022 Sopwith Cup at the Goodwood Members Meeting. However, whilst Goodwood has possibly been its pinnacle, it has also been a regular contender in HRDC Touring Greats, the HRDC Jack Sears Trophy and All Stars Series, BARC Oldies but Goldies, the Classic Saloon Car Championship and more besides and with the St Marys Trophy on the running order once again at this years Goodwood Revival there is the possibility of a further appearance at one of the most prestigious motorsport events ever conceived. The list of this venerable Minor's many Class Wins and podiums is too long to cover here and a substantial amount of further information about the car's decades of motor racing history is contained in the car’s history file which can be inspected at our Documents Desk at Race Retro or can be emailed to interested parties.Similarly, the car’s mechanical specification and developments over the years are listed on several pages and can be forwarded to potential buyers.Key Info;Car completely rebuilt in 2008 by IK Classics2017/2022 New full-race 1,293cc engine. An important Works 6R4, entered in the infamous 1986 Rallye de Portugal for Tony Pond and Rob Arthur and fresh to market having been privately owned and successfully campaigned since 1996. In the early 1980s, fully aware of the influence of motorsport success on their sales figures, the British Leyland hierarchy were seeking another model to continue to carry the company name to sporting success, however in reality, there were no obvious candidates. It was only with the announcement of a new 'Group B' category for rally cars that the way became clear to commence what was to become the 6R4 programme. Under the new regulations, only 200 units were required for 'homologation' (plus 20 'Evolution' models) and there were relatively few design restrictions. Turbocharged engines, four-wheel drive, state of the art materials and lots of aerodynamic modifications were allowed resulting, over the next four years, in some of the wildest and most powerful competition machines ever produced. As is well documented elsewhere, the world of International Rallying was devastated in 1985/1986 by a number of high profile fatal accidents resulting in ‘Group B’ rally cars being outlawed for the 1987 season, effectively ending the 6R4's International career which, owing to its long gestation period, had started a couple of years too late anyway. The 6R4's performance on the 1985 RAC Rally - its best ever placing - indicated that an earlier start could have yielded much better results, certainly in the 1986 ‘learning’ year. However, perhaps because of their slightly macabre, 'bad boy' reputation or maybe due to their ballistic performance potential and the short timespan in which they ruled, genuine Works 'Group B' rally cars have become incredibly valuable, rivalled only by F1 cars with serious provenance and Le Mans winners. On offer here is chassis #208 which is fresh to market having been owned privately by our vendor since 1996. C818 FFC was entered and driven by Tony Pond and Rob Arthur in the infamous 1986 Rallye de Portugal. During the rally, an RS200 tragically left the road killing some spectators and injuring many others. A number of drivers, including Tony Pond, understandably refused to drive for the rest of the event on the basis that it was unlikely that spectators lining the stages would be deterred in their traditional quest to get as close to a speeding rally car as possible, so chassis #208 was withdrawn.During 1986, #208 was also used as Tony Pond’s test car in the Tour de Corse, was Malcolm Wilson’s test car at the 1986 Rallye San Remo and post-Portugal, was entered in the Marlboro Port Talbot rally achieving an impressive third overall, driven by David Llewellyn with Phil Short in the hot seat.It was subsequently sold to ex-Austin Rover Tyre Department Manager, Ian Beveridge, who campaigned the Metro with his wife Pat in the BTRDA Championship in 1987, 1988 and 1989 achieving much success including winning the Severn Valley Stages and the Wyedean twice. For these UK-based championships, the engine was de-tuned into 'single-plenum spec' in order to comply with the regulations and it has remained in this configuration ever since. In 1996, the car was acquired by its current owner who has used it as intended ever since, achieving some impressive results over the past 29 years including winning the Tempest rally in 1999 and numerous class wins at the Rallye Sunseeker from 1997 to 2012. More recently, C818 FFC has become synonymous with Goodwood in current ownership, entertaining the crowds on the Goodwood Festival of Speed rally stage on no less than 16 occasions from 2005 to 2024. More recently, the car was selected as one of six MGs used in a special parade at the Festival for the MG 100 year celebrations, as well as competing on the infamous hill climb. The car has also competed at the Goodwood 72nd and 78th Members Meetings as part of the Rally Sprints, as well as the one off Goodwood Speed Week during COVID.Our vendors mantelpiece is adorned by ‘Driver of the Day’ silverware from 2006, 2009 and 2016 and in more recent times, his son won the ‘Group B’ class in this car at the Goodwood FoS in 2019. A year earlier, in 2018, at the Festival, the car was driven by Jimmy McRae (who signed and dated the driver’s side door panel) and at the 2023 event, it was driven by former World Rally champion, Peter Solberg, who also signed the car. #208 subsequently appeared on the front page of Autosport magazine in August 2023 with Peter Solberg doing a feature on iconic machines after his drive in the 6R4. #208 also adorned the front cover of the 1986 Autosport magazine after Rallye de Portugal.#208 has frequently been in the public eye over the years including a feature by Classic and Sportscar magazine in 1999 where Tony Pond was reunited with the car driving it with the current owner at the Bill Gwynne Rally School and offering him some driving tips. In 2015, it featured in an award-winning short film starring Game of Thrones actor, Richard Madden and in 2020, it took part in promotional filming for the inaugural Goodwood Speed Week racing against a Gravity 'Jet pack'.The car was looked after by the late Rod Lynne (ex-works Austin Rover) from 1987 until 2006 and since 2010 has been prepared to a high standard by Historic Motorsport, with engine and differential maintenance entrusted to Autosportif. It’s accompanied by a set of Rob Arthur’s overalls, historic rally road books and the original sales invoice from Austin Rover. With a straight line of ownership and available for the first time in 29 years, this may well be an unrepeatable opportunity and we welcome any enquiries for this important ex-Works MG Metro 6R4.Specification Make: MG Model: METRO 6R4 Year: 1986 Chassis Number: 208 Registration Number: C818 FFC Transmission: Manual Drive Side: Right-hand DriveClick here for more details and images

An unrepeatable opportunity to acquire a car that’s been purpose-built to take on one of the world’s greatest motor sport challenges, yet remains UK-registered and road legal.  The Sport version of Audi's sensational Quattro was launched in the autumn of 1983, three years after the original's unveiling at the Geneva Salon had taken the motoring world by storm. It had a shortened wheelbase and was fitted with a new, lighter version of the five-cylinder engine boasting an aluminium block and a Twin-Cam 20-valve cylinder head, while anti-lock braking made its first appearance on a Quattro-equipped Audi. Running on Bosch HI-Jetronic fuel-injection, the extensively revised engine developed a claimed 306bhp and gave this quite remarkable road car a top speed of around 155mph. Audi built 214 examples of the Sport, though only 164 were actually sold to customers. We are delighted to be able to offer Keith Edward's legendary 800bhp-plus, SWB Audi S1. It was initially purchased by garage owner and rally driver Keith as a family road car but there were always lots of cars around and the Audi was eventually hardly used. Passionately interested in motorsport, Keith was staring at the car one day and considering selling it, but then he thought that it might be fun to prepare it for a bit of hill climbing at local club level. There simply is not space here to cover the next 30 years of the Quattro's history but a lot of it is available on some much-watched videos and magazine articles. Success at club level led to the car being developed further and further as Keith is a talented and innovative engineer, until it was so competition-focused that it was no longer practical to run it as a road-registered car.Developed and then developed some more over the years, there followed about ten years in the British Hillclimb Championship, a further four or five enjoying invitation events around Europe and finally the ultimate accolade, an invitation from Pikes Peak International Hill Climb to take part in 'The Race to the Clouds'.Keith has a legendary attention to detail and throughout the two decades of development, every nut, bolt, pipe and bracket was given consideration in terms of its weight, fitness for purpose and aesthetic merit with shaving tenths of a second the criteria. There came a point however, when the only way to make the car more competitive was to shorten the wheelbase, as had been done by the factory in late 1983 and Dialynx of Swindon, renowned Quattro specialists and builders of SWB cars and Sport Quattro 'Group B' replicas, were tasked with the job.The body was stripped of its panels, reduced in length by removing 320mm between the B and C posts and rebuilt using Kevlar-composite panels and mouldings (copied directly from Audi UK's own 'Group B' car), with most of the glass replaced by Perspex. Only the original roof and doors remained and even the doors were pared down to about 4lbs in weight. Shortly afterwards, the 10-valve engine was replaced by a 20-valve unit which was extensively modified by Dialynx. Details of these engine mods are academic as the engine has been further developed by Keith himself since then (current spec below). The car's adventures in Europe in this form are all documented in the enormous history file and on a number of YouTube videos. The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), also known as 'The Race to the Clouds', is an invitational automobile hill climb to the summit of Pikes Peak – America’s Mountain in Colorado - and is held on the last Sunday in June. From the start at 9,400ft, the 12.42 mile course has 156 bends and finishes at 14,115ft, a climb of over 4,700ft, not far short of a mile vertically. If you were in an unpressurised aeroplane at that height you would have been wearing an oxygen mask for some time, so setting up an internal combustion engine to run on reduced oxygen levels can be complex. The invitation to run the car at Pikes Peak is a major honour within the hill climb community and was proudly received by Keith. The Audi was shipped to Colorado Springs in both 2018 and 2019, however neither year was to bring fulfilment, with the car overheating in 2018 (subsequently sorted after testing at Blyton Park, pre-COVID) and despite good practice runs in 2019, the clouds closed in on Race Day and that was that. The full story is on YouTube. Whilst intending to return in 2020, COVID regulations, increasing costs and lack of time mean that Keith has sadly made the decision that after 30-plus years, having accomplished everything else, he and his beloved Audi will have to part ways.We understand that the Audi would be welcome again at Pikes Peak with Keith having received another invitation recently or, closer to home, would be welcome here in the UK at club level hill climbs, sprints or even Time Attack. UK-registered and road-legal (subject to a few sensitive modifications) it could be used on the road driving to events, but equally it could just be a perfect showpiece in any serious Collection. This car has been viewed more than 2,000,000 times on YouTube and has been magazine-featured all over the globe. It's accompanied by 18 box files of history, entry forms, programmes, results sheets and 30 years of correspondence, MSA paperwork, log books etc.'Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence' said Vince Lombardi, after whom the Superbowl is named. To suggest that Keith has pursued perfection is no understatement, he has undoubtedly achieved excellence.SpecificationEngine: 2.266-litre, in-line five-cylinder, cast iron block, aluminum cylinder head with four valves per cylinder. Superbly restored with in-date FIA/HTP papers and huge scope for worldwide competitive racing. The Lotus 22 Formula Junior was a further development of the Type 20 with a stiffer tubular frame made of thicker metal and other stabilising chassis elements. The front suspension was essentially unchanged, while the rear suspension followed the concept of the 1961 Lotus 21 Formula 1 car, so that the Lotus 22 no longer used the driveshafts as overhead suspension points, but instead added overhead camber links. The track had been widened slightly compared to the Type 20, externally mounted Girling disc brakes were fitted all around and the car sat on 13" wheels front and rear. The 1.1-litre Ford Cosworth engine, now with dry sump lubrication and at that time already guaranteed 100bhp, was installed at an angle of 30° to the right in order to make the body more aerodynamic at the rear and to lower the centre of gravity. The Type 22 was also delivered from the factory with 4-speed gearboxes based on Renault or VW transmissions.22-J-52 is one of the 77 original Lotus 22s and #8 of the ten originally purchased and owned by Jim Russell for use at his race school at Snetterton. Unique in its day, the legendary race school ran for five days a week and played a pivotal part in the development of many young drivers including Emerson Fittiipaldi, Derek Bell, Danny Sullivan, Tiff Needell, Teddy Pilette, Nando Parrado and Jacques Villeneuve. In 1985, once it served its time in the UK, the car was sold into Italy by Ken Booth to Allessandra Ripamonti who raced it extensively at Monza, Imola and the Nürburgring from 1992 through to 2007. Our vendor purchased the car in 2013 from Italy, embarking on a two year home restoration including an engine and gearbox rebuild, chassis work/straightening, new petrol and oil tanks, new wiring and wheel bearings. Since completion, the car has been raced in anger only a handful of times, with its last major outing being the Silverstone International in 2018.It's supplied with spare suspension, a large selection of Hewland gears, its history file containing old racing results and invoices for parts and the current FIA/HTP papers valid until 2028.The car is being offered by our vendor under the sad circumstances that medical reasons prevent him from racing any more and it is time to move the car on to its next custodian. As a fully restored Formula Junior with every detail attended to ensuring its authentic Lotus Heritage, this 22 seems remarkable value at today's estimate. Finished in Carnival Red it presents really well, starting and driving on the button and ready to offer its new owner many seasons of competitive racing. Having spent many years at Jim Russel's race school, #22-J-52 is bound to have been driven by someone who went on to become a household name and the research could be fun.Specification Make: LOTUS Model: 22 Year: 1963 Chassis Number: 22-J-52 Registration Number: N/A Transmission: Manual Engine Number: TBC Make: Interior Colour: GreenClick here for more details and images

Striking looks in period Jägermeister livery, this S38-powered 5-Series is ready to race. This 1987 BMW 5 Series (E28) is a well raced, hugely competitive car well known in BMW circles, having featured in a plethora of magazines and articles. It's visually stunning with the iconic Jägermeister livery perfectly representing the nature of this car. This exceptional vehicle has undergone a remarkable transformation having started life as an E28 520i Lux (D758 SGK) and now fully built up into what you see today, with its E34 M5 S38 six-cylinder heart, tuned and tweaked to produced an impressive 360bhp. A beautiful blend of brute strength and stunning looks, it stands out from the crowd for all the right reasons. This automotive gem earned its stripes with a glorious 5-page feature in the January 2023 issue of Total BMW, solidifying its status as a standout in the world of high-performance cars. Notably, it graced the cover of the 2003 Silverstone BARC Championship Race day Programme and made further appearances in Total BMW (August 2004) and BMW Car Magazine (March 2017).Initially, after its conversion from a fairly uninspiring donor car to a proper racer, it was still able to wear a number plate and drive on the streets, however, it is no longer currently MOT'd or on the road and whilst it currently lacks road legality, its race/track-oriented features are nothing short of extraordinary.Externally, the BMW has a carbon fibre bonnet and boot-lid, 'Group 5' arches and all-steel panels, all fitting very well. With Gaz coil-overs, an E34 M5 LSD and enormous ET11 Wagner-Tuning two-piece, split-rims (9.5" x 16" fronts and 10.5" x 16" rears) wrapped in 245/45/16 and 265/45/16 tyres respectively, grip and traction are phenomenal. The car is powered by the later S38 E34 M5 engine and gearbox, boasting a 6,900rpm 'redline' and with a custom-made stainless steel exhaust system and upgraded engine management, we understand that power output is in the region of 360bhp. The interior is exceptionally well finished, especially for a race car, with a multi-point roll cage, custom Alcantara flocked dash, DigiDash 2 display, a Momo steering wheel and Corbeau bucket seats with 6-point TRS harnesses. Retardation is handled by 750iL brakes wearing EBC Orange Stuff pads and an Accusump oil reservoir prevents surge. The history file makes for very pleasant reading and features some build photos, a plethora of invoices over the years, every MOT for D758 SGK from 1994-2009 and all the magazines in which the car has been featured.A well documented and storied history, meticulously detailed, and built for the top A2 (over 3,601cc) class in Classic Thunder Cars, this 1987 BMW E28 M5 is running and driving beautifully, eligible for plenty of prestigious motorsport events and ready to compete once more.Specification Make: BMW Model: E38 M5 - S38 Year: 1984 Chassis Number: TBA Registration Number: N/A Transmission: Manual Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Make: RHDClick here for more details and images

Very rare - possibly unique - within UK Club motorsport, this well-prepared XJ-SC has the added benefit of being road-registered and is offered without Reserve. Only 1,130 examples of the six-cylinder XJ-SC were built and we can’t recall ever having seen one converted to a race car, certainly at UK club level and this striking car certainly looks the part. It was originally built to be eligible for the Standard 'Class A' of the popular Jaguar Enthusiast Club GT Championship, usually run over 12 rounds across six weekends of the season at some of the UK’s top circuits including Silverstone, Brands Hatch and Donington Park. It would undoubtedly be a welcome addition to the grids at a number of other UK Championships and being road-registered, opens up the possibility of entry to hill climbs, sprints, road rallies and even the occasional track day.In our vendor’s words, 'A bit over two years ago, a race-winning Jaguar XJ-S race preparer (JEC Champion, Colin Philpott of Powerbell Services) fitted new race suspension bushes, custom roll cage, outboard rear discs, a Topline automatic fire system, fabricated fuel tank, new Schroth Profi II ASM race harnesses worth about £900 plus all the other FIA regulation safety requirements. He then lightened the car by removing the air-conditioning, carpets and noise padding, fabricated lightweight aluminium door and interior panels, fitted twin specially commissioned new Corbeau Sprint Excel race seats worth £1,900, a period Momo removable steering wheel, appropriate period aluminium wheels and much more'.External modifications to the top lip of the boot lid as well as the bespoke slimline bumpers front and rear give the car a more pleasing outline. Our vendor feels it’s a little reminiscent of some of the early design studies by Malcolm Sayer, Jaguar’s legendary aerodynamicist and designer of the C, D and E-Types and who was responsible for the initial work on the XJ27 (XJ-S) before his untimely passing at age 53. His sleek low-nose style didn’t survive as a result of US headlight and 'fender' requirements and Sir William Lyons’ own preferences. The car presents in a Ecurie Ecosse blue paint scheme with the roundels and stripes as might have been seen in period on a D-Type, enhanced by a new navy blue soft top (£2,200) and black 5-spoke alloys. There are one or two areas where there has been a paint reaction (see images) and the original interior is available if required but is in France so a courier would be required. The appropriate registration number, C7 XSC, will remain with the car.Our vendor unfortunately sustained a long-term leg injury a week before the finished car was delivered, so this good looking Jaguar has never been raced. This is a super opportunity to enter the world of Jaguar Club Racing in a rare - possibly unique - road-registered racer that, apart from a spanner check, looks ready to go and offered without Reserve could be remarkable value.Specification Make: JAGUAR Model: XJ-SC Year: 1987 Chassis Number: SAJJNACC7CA141978 Registration Number: C7 XSC Transmission: Manual Engine Number: 9DPAMA116185 Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Make: RHDClick here for more details and images

Highly competitive, drum-braked 1950s sports racer with known history from new, eligible for a number of historic race series. Richard Brown was something of a Buckler enthusiast. He and his brother, Creighton, started racing in Buckler karts in the 1960s, became friends with the Buckler family and he owned and competed in several models of their cars over the years. He was a quick hill climber in cars such as Mallocks, Ralts & Pilbeams and at one time he held the outright Shelsley hill record. Creighton was a quick Clubmans racer who won a few Clubmans Championships and is probably better known as a director of McLaren F1.Richard bought this car as a project in about  2015. It came from Ireland in rather a sorry state having lost its original body and the chassis was badly corroded so he had it comprehensively rebuilt by John Sabourin of Rawlson Racing in Kent over the winter of 2015/16. He restored it around a new chassis, built around the original chassis and another MK15 chassis for jigs and using the correct welding techniques etc. A period correct Microplas Mistral body was sourced and fitted. True to its MG/Morris roots the specification now includes:Fullrace 1,380cc 'A-Series' engine by MAMBA/Bridge Engineering of Faringdon, Oxfordshire. Midget tuftrided/balanced crank 'S' balanced rods. Omega pistons. MD 296 Cam. Vernier Sprocket Composite head gasket. Roller rockers. ARP bolts. Steel flywheel  High torque starter. Aldon ignition. Weber 45DCOE carb Very strong engine that revs to 7,600rpm MG/Morris rear axle Straight-cut Midget gearbox with HD layshaft and bearings by Peter May Cam & Pawl limited-slip differential by Peter MayThere is a fair pile of history with the car, including correspondence from the original owner and later owners, old adverts for the car etc., a photocopy of the programme for the 1964 Leinster Trophy races showing the car entered in the 'Holmpatrick Trophy' race, restoration photos, invoices for the 1,380cc A-Series from Mamba Motorsport and the heavy duty Midget gearbox and cam & pawl diff from Peter May Engineering. The car is well known to the thriving Buckler Register and has competed successfully with them at Prescott, Shelsley (nearly always the quickest Buckler) and the Isle of Man Classic, where it racked up three wins in three events. We understand that it would be eligible for historic racing with series such as Motor Racing Legends' Stirling Moss Trophy, Equipe Classic Racing’s '50s Drum-Braked Sportscars, possibly FISCAR and HSCC Griffith-Haig Trophy and maybe even Goodwood?Specification Make: BUCKLER Model: MK15 MISTRAL Year: 1956 Chassis Number: MKXV/002P Registration Number: ZW 3762 Transmission: Manual Engine Number: MME 015RPI Make: Click here for more details and images

A genuine period Trans-Am car driven by John Hall from the early 1970s and prepared and campaigned successfully by the current long term owner in the UK and North America in more recent times. Offered here is a very special period Boss 302 Mustang that was campaigned by John Hall in the early 1970s in the well known SCCA Trans-Am series. There is a list of period results below and the car is accompanied by a large history file detailing much of its history. There is simply too much to list here, so we recommend interested parties come along and see the car and history file for themselves or call our car specialist for further details. The current owner is a real V8 enthusiast and this example has formed part of his prominent racing stable since 2003. He spent a lot of his time in the US during the early part of his ownership, enjoying much success at circuits such as Lime Rock and Watkins Glen, with results included in the file. The Mustang was then shipped to the UK in 2013 as the owner lives over here and after being prepared to European-spec, has been raced competitively in Europe ever since, including circuits such as Spa and Silverstone. The car has been the recipient of significant investment in recent years, including an engine refresh by Peter Knight, fitment of AST custom dampers, a new clutch and more. It's powered by a 337ci 'stroker' with ported Boss 302 heads, roller valvetrain  and a dry-sump.  The car has obviously been prepared to a high standard by Richard Moore (Moore Racing) as is evident from its consistent results over the years and there are a good number of spares accompanying the car including two body panels, L+R front headlamp surrounds and three spare diffs with different ratios. By separate negotiation, there is also a brand new FIA 302 V8 by Peter Knight. It's currently finished in white and wearing the period correct 'Boss GTX 302' livery applied originally for the very successful 1972 season.Quite simply, this is an extremely rare opportunity to own a period race car with continuous history that is available for the first time in 22 years and offers access into some of the best historic motorsport around the globe. Well prepared road-registered Series II Alpine racer with freshly rebuilt 1,890cc, 160bhp Holbay unit. Eligible for HSCC Historic Road Sports-Invitation Class, sprints, hill climbs and more. This smart Series II Sunbeam Alpine Race Car was purchased by our vendor a couple of years ago with the intention of doing a bit of circuit racing with his son, Oli, who had enjoyed a few outings in Classic Formula Ford and fancied racing with his dad. Our vendor is a well respected rally car engine builder (recently retired) and had enjoyed much success over many years driving rally cars but had no real experience of going round and round on the black stuff. The car was basically race-ready when he purchased it but inevitably a few tweaks were necessary. The first test day did not end too well as the engine had something metallic for lunch and that was the end of that. So it was back to the drawing board and our vendor utilised his many years of experience carefully rebuilding the Alpine's engine. It’s a 1,890cc four-cylinder based on the Sunbeam Holbay 1,725cc unit, fully lightened and balanced with steel rods and forged pistons, fuelled by twin 45 DCOE Webers and exhausted through a tubular manifold. A dyno print-out prior to the rebuild showed 160bhp, it might be a bit more now and this power is fed through a Ford Escort 4-speed SCCR gearbox to the limited-slip diff.Other competition features include a full roll cage, alloy 45-litre fuel tank, Facet fuel pump, boot-mounted lightweight battery, high-torque starter, new aluminium lightweight radiator, Sparco bucket seat, TRS harnesses, plumbed-in Lifeline extinguisher, competition dashboard, Prototipo wheel and much more. We understand that the safety-related equipment is all in-date but advise interested parties to check on its currency and suitability, as with any competition car.The Alpine presents well both inside and out, in Dove Grey with Burgundy Shelby-style racing stripes, a white Sebring-style alloy hardtop and sits on a set of silver Minilites. With the passage of time, our vendor feels that he is becoming a little 'senior' to learn the ins and outs of circuit racing and would rather stick to thundering through a forest sideways, so the decision was taken to offer the car for sale. It hasn’t been run in anger since the rebuild but has covered a couple of hundred road miles. The HSCC have opened up eligibility for their Historic Road Sports Championship by introducing an 'Invitation Class' for cars with non-standard components and the car will undoubtedly qualify for other events and of course, sprints and hill climbs.Supplied to auction with a history file full of receipts and very sensibly estimated, this classic Alpine could offer a rewarding route into the fun world of club-level motorsport.Specification Make: SUNBEAM Model: ALPINE Year: 1961 Chassis Number: B91031981HR0 Registration Number: 160 XVB Transmission: Manual Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Odometer Reading: 51113 Miles Make: RHD Interior Colour: WhiteClick here for more details and images

An extremely well sorted Escort Mk1 Rally contender powered by a 1600 gathercole Twin-Cam engine. This bright, Monza Blue, first generation Escort has been a well known competitor in recent years, covering many miles on rally stages all over the UK with frequent outings in the British Historic Rally Championship and HRCR events and some notable finishes along the way. Clearly, with regular stage appearances, this is not, nor does it pretend to be, a 'show queen', however the car presents really well, sitting all-square, fit for purpose and ready to go.It was purchased in 2017 as a rolling shell and has been built with one purpose in mind - to be used and enjoyed as intended be that on tarmac or forest stages, although it's currently been set up for gravel by its present owner and long-time rally stalwart, Philip Atkinson. Motivation is provided by an all-steel 1600 Twin-Cam engine, fully prepared by David Gathercole of renowned engine builders, Gathercole Race Engines, mated to a recently refreshed gearbox which we understand may benefit from a little gentle use to get it fully bedded in and ready for its next adventure. The Twin-Cam sits in a very tidy engine bay that has been professionally prepared, as has the boot, which is neatly laid-out with an alloy caged remote filler, twin Facet fuel pumps with braided lines, oil catch tank, carbon battery box and quick-release spare wheel etc.The car's interior is one of the best we have seen in a 'club' rally car with bracketed Cobra seats, TRS harnesses, Racetech instruments, Brantz 2 timer, Stilo DG-10 intercom and a superbly designed dashboard centre switch/fuse panel.Naturally, as with any competition car, it's important to asses the currency and suitability of any safety-related equipment (seats, belts, tank, extinguishers etc.).Having had some success over the years, including a C2 Class win within the HRCR, we suggest that this very affordable rally-prepared Escort, in the right hands, will provide the next custodian with a great deal of sideways fun and entertainment within historic rally car circles and with that in mind, we welcome and encourage your early inspection to fully satisfy yourself as to the suitability of this particular Blue Oval rally contender.Specification Make: FORD Model: ESCORT 1600 Year: 1969 Chassis Number: BB44J603723 Registration Number: OGM 520H Transmission: Manual Engine Number: TBC Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Make: RHD Interior Colour: BlueClick here for more details and images

Recently arrived from Australia, this well presented 1,600cc Mk1 Escort competition car offers potential to upgrade to a UK-spec 'Group 2' race or rally car. On offer here is a right-hand drive Mk1 Ford Escort that has been campaigned in the historic racing scene in Australia. The all-steel bodyshell came originally from a 1970 1,600cc car, is reported to be clean with no rust and is wearing Australian VIN plates. We’re informed that the car was built for racing by Mike Van Den Rydt fitted with a 1,975cc, alloy-blocked, wet-sump BDG but had to be re-sleeved to 1,600cc to meet the local Touring Car regulations in Australia. The engine currently remains at 1,600cc, fuelled by twin sidedraft Webers, exhausted through a Tony Law Manifold and mated to a 4-speed gearbox. Front suspension is coil-over with adjustable platforms, rear suspension is 4-link with leaf springs, it sits on 13" Minilite-style wheels and the rear axle is an Atlas fitted with drum brakes as per the Australian regulations. The current owner bought the car to the UK a few years ago with the intention of developing it to a full European-spec FIA 'Group 2' Historic Saloon, however other projects took priority and the car is now on the market. We understand that it would be possible to take the engine back to 1,975cc if 'Group 2' was the new owner’s ambition but, if that is not the case, then the little Escort would fit well into UK Club racing or even rallying.Very well presented in an attractive shade of blue, this impressive Escort is sensibly estimated at a level that allows scope for buyers to take the car further or just enjoy as is. Apart from a ‘shakedown’ test when it first arrived, we understand that it has not been used ‘in anger’. As with any competition car, it’s important to check the currency and suitability of the safety equipment (belts, seats, tank, extinguishers etc.) to ensure it’s appropriate for whatever level of motorsport the car’s next owner has in mind. This is a rare opportunity and we invite and encourage your viewing of this delightful Mk1 at our Race Retro sale.Specification Make: FORD Model: ESCORT MK1 Year: 1970 Chassis Number: TBA Registration Number: N/A Transmission: Manual Drive Side: Right-hand Drive Make: RHDClick here for more details and images
