As noted in the Introduction "The conclusion of treaties with western nations, the opening of the Five ports, and the discovery of gold in California, have caused a vast increase in trade, more extensive intercourse, and closer relations with the 'Central flowery people.'" Notably, the first two words in the vocabulary list are "Gold" and "Gold-dust".
