Smith OBE.In 1986 Roger enrolled on a course at the Manchester School of Horology aged just 16. This proved to be a life changing moment for Roger as it was at the School that he first encountered the late George Daniels (1926-2011), considered the greatest watchmaker of the last century leaving a lasting legacy like no other. Aged just 22, Roger completed his first working pocket watch and was able to present it to George Daniels at his workshop on the Isle of Man. The sharp but constructive advice he received resulted in a further 5 and half years honing his skills. In 1998 Roger finally succeeded in impressing George Daniels and was invited to move to the Isle of Man to work on the Millennium series with Daniels directly. The Millennium was created over a period of 3 years with delivery made in 1999 ahead of the new millennium. This was the first collaboration between George and Roger and each watch was painstakingly hand-finished by the two of them in what is considered as an 'English style'. With just 48 examples made in yellow gold it is difficult to overestimate just how important these watches were to the advancement of independent Horology using the Co-Axial escapement - a movement that is considered a greater development than any other since the work of Thomas Mudge in 1755 and is quite simply phenomenal. After the success of the Millennium, George and Roger conspired to create a further collaboration with the Anniversary, a step further into fully hand created watches consciously creating a fully British born handmade watch. This was a true collaboration with Roger making changes and also improving on the Co-Axial design. They planned to create 35 Anniversary watches to signify the amount of years that had passed since George created his first hand created watch. The Series 2 was the first of Rogers watches to be entirely made in-house. Each watch comprises of 225 parts and have all been meticulously and lovingly finished to an exceptionally high standard. The current example is numbered 20-c and was the 32nd Series 2 to be delivered. In late 2011 Roger moved from a 38mm case to a 40mm case making this 1 of just 9 Series 2s that was housed in the early Phase 1 38mm case. This watch is particularly special as it is believed to be the last of the Phase 1s to have been cased in yellow gold. This Series 2 is in excellent condition having been kept safe since first received in 2011. Accompanying the watch are all the original accessories including a finely crafted wooden Roger Smith display box by Linley and the Ownership and Service History booklet. Limited to producing just 15 watches a year, obtaining one of Rogers works of art is a rare thing. Since Roger formed the company in 2001 he has made 128 RW Smith watches with 68 of them being a Series 2. This auction therefore represents an extraordinary opportunity to be the keeper of one his exclusive timepieces. As a British company we are also honoured to be offering a British made watch on British soil. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Cartier. A very fine and rare 18K gold manual wind wristwatch offered on behalf of the original ownerModel: PebbleDate: London Hallmark for 1972Movement: Jewelled Cal.P838 manual wind, Glucydor balance, No.1600671Dial: Cream, black Roman numerals, black inner minute track, blued steel sword handsCase: Polished round, back secured by 4 screws, cabochon set crown, hooded lugs, No.1270Strap/Bracelet: Brown Cartier alligator leatherBuckle/Clasp: 18K gold deployant clasp, stamped JC and numbered 1270, London Hallmark for 1972Signed: Case stamped JC, movement signed Jaeger-LeCoultre, dial signed CartierSize: 35mm Accompaniments: Cartier service pouchFootnotes:Cartier started to produce wristwatches in their London workshops in the 1960s at the absolute height of the 'swinging sixties' when London's influence and creativity was reverberating around the world. At this time, under the supervision of Jean-Jacques Cartier, Cartier created some of the most interesting and now sought after designs of the vintage watch world such as the Maxi Oval and the Crash. Each watch was hand crafted in the jewellery workshops before being handed to the watchmakers to make up into the finished piece. Each piece would then take approximately a week to produce ensuring their quality and by default their scarcity.During this period Cartier London designed the watch that bears the nickname of the 'Pebble' or in the United States the 'Baseball'. Using the simple juxtaposition of a square within a circle sums up the clear design definitions that create distinctive and original watch designs. By softening the square with rounded edges and flipping the point to twelve o'clock makes it distinctively Cartier.Celebrating its 50th Anniversary, 2022 is an exciting year for the Cartier Pebble. In October Cartier unveiled a new limited edition of 150 pieces, raising awareness and introducing the model to a new audience. The current lot represents an incredibly rare opportunity to obtain an original Pebble hallmarked for London 1972 and offered on behalf of the original owner. A cherished watch over the years, the owner recalls purchasing the piece in the early 70s along with the smaller version directly from Cartier London. With only a handful of pieces known this truly is an exceptionally rare watch to come to market with impeccable provenance. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The watch encompasses two large complications whilst retaining an elegant and attractive size - tandem mainspring barrels for 10 day power reserve and a tourbillon both of which traditionally take a great deal of space. At its introduction it was seen as a pinnacle of watchmaking. Unusually but traditional with Patek Philippe the view of the tourbillon is located to the reverse; keeping in tune with their aesthetic of unparalleled yet understated elegance. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The following years witnessed far more subtle changes, which are less easily identifiable, and that might only be differentiated by the length of the hands or the scale on the bezel for example. These changes were defined by the number after the hyphen in the reference number inscribed on the inside of the case back. The current example is a 2998-1 which features the much admired calibre 321, straight lugs, small pushers and a round 'O' in Omega. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Rolex. By sinking the subsidiary dials and outer scale within the opaque black dial background, the dial achieves an unusual three-dimensionality and an instantly recognisable look.Arguably no other watch has ever captured the imagination of the collector's world in the same way that the Paul Newman Rolex Daytona has. In recent years this model in all its different incarnations has built up an almost mythical reputation. With its iconic design and the photos on Paul Newman's wrist the exotic Daytona dial truly represents the dream of watch collecting. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ΩΩ VAT on imported items at the prevailing rate on Hammer Price and Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The new timepiece should be easy to read, anti-magnetic and shock- and waterproof. Development started early in 1962 and the Heuer 'Carrera' was launched to the public a year later. The name 'Carrera' was simple, easy to pronounce, understood in various languages and evoked imagery of adventure, danger and heroism. The first Heuer Carreras can be identified by the ED.HEUER&CO.SA signature on their inner case backs and movements. Soon after the merger with Leonidas to Heuer-Leonidas in late 1964 the markings changed to HEUER-LEONIDAS SA. Hence the overall production time of Carreras with these Ed Heuer marks was only for six months. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

They would establish the company internationally, making the Cartier a favourite among the elite. Named 'King of Jewellers', the brand was quick to turn its attention to watches. By establishing an exclusive contract with Edmond Jaeger between the years 1907 to 1938, Cartier were at the forefront when it came to the commercial adoption of the wristwatch. Edmond Jaeger had spent his formative years at Breguet before setting up his own workshop in 1907 and created some of the best pieces of the period. It was in 1911 that Cartier first released the Santos to the public after initially being designed in 1904 for Louis Cartiers friend Alberto Santos-Dumont. As stated by Cartier alongside their current line-up the signature design of the Santos 'with visible screws and a daring square silhouette, has adapted effortlessly to the times since its creation – while staying true to the watch's boundary-breaking inspiration.' The current lot represents a very early example of a Santos from circa 1920 and considering this watch is 100 years old it is a fantastic how relevant it still feels today. To celebrate this, in 1976 the Jeweller De Marchi of Turin took delivery of a group of special celebratory Apollo Soyuz watches with the mission badge on the dial and a special embossed case back depicting the Saturn Rocket on a map of the world. The back was also lightly engraved with the limited edition number, an I for Italy and an Ω.The present watch was bought new in 1980 at a large discount when it is possible that the Italian market was a difficult place to sell this particular piece. It was soon inherited by the present owner who left it unused in a draw for many years and only sporadically wearing it.
