See Darton G1026. Scarce first exposition in print of the teaching methods of Thomas Braidwood (1715-1806), the pioneer teacher of deaf and mute children. Joseph Watson (1765-1829) was Braidwood's nephew, and he attended his uncle's school in Mare Street, Hackney, before going on to be appointed headmaster of the Asylum for Educating the Deaf and Dumb Children of the Poor in the Kent Road in 1792. The pictorial vocabulary includes a large number of scenes of trade and commerce, household objects, and natural history subjects. (2)
