Violet, Duchess of Rutland (British, 1856-1937) Study of the artist's daughter, the Lady Diana Cooper, as the Madonna in Max Reinhardt's 1923 play "The Miracle" signed and inscribed lower left "The Miracle DC / New York / 1924 by VR" and inscribed verso with artist and sitter pencil 15 x 10cm (6 x 4in) Other Notes: Lady Diana Cooper (nee Manners), Viscountess Norwich (1892-1982) was a high profile London socialite and actress. She was married to Alfred Duff Cooper, 1st Viscount Norwich who served in Winston Churchill's war cabinet and was the daughter of the 8th Duke of Rutland. She was also the great aunt of former prime minister David Cameron. One of her most famous acting roles was on Boadway in 1923, playing the Madonna in Max Reinhardt's "The Miracle", which went on to tour Britain and Europe. "The Miracle" was a sumptous recreation of an old German legend, in which a miraculous statue of the Virgin comes to life and takes the place of a young nun so she can escape the convent and see the world. The Austrian director Max Reinhardt had staged an earlier production in 1912 but in the 1920s he devised a more lavish production. Lady Diana Cooper usually played the Virgin which involved standing stock-still for nearly as hour as a statue before coming to life; she occasionally played the nun. They opened in New York in 1924, toured all of America, then central Europe, then finally England and Wales. A little loss of colour.
