I do congratulate you old girl (I shall soon have to speak more politely!!!) and send you my best wishes for all happiness in the future. If you hunted the world you could find no better than the Colonel….' and also mentions his brother, 'Rivy arrives out here @ Xmas. Perhaps (I trust so) I will be with the regiment by then'. Grenfell also writes of his stable and remarks that he is playing polo, including a championship match the following week, and then goes to join his regiment '& have the pleasure of walking to Sialkote about 200 miles!' Autographs of Grenfell are rare in any form as a result of his being killed in action at the age of 34. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG Grenfell refers to his twin brother, Riversdale Grenfell (1880-1914), who served in the 9th Lancers with his brother and was also tragically killed in action in September 1914.

Yes, I'm that old', further remarking 'I got quite a kick out of your Dad's letter mentioning names of the old timers I used to remember seeing. I was playing in Newcastle & Sunderland last March, Hardy & me stayed at the old Grand Hotel in Tynemouth for the two weeks. Am sorry your Dad didn't contact me, as I met quite a few of the Sons and Daughters of the old gang & thoroughly enjoyed the exchange of memoirs, but felt a bit sad to see the unhappy appearance of Canny auld Shiels. I visited Dockwray Square, where I used to live, it certainly was a sad sight.' In a postscript Laurel adds 'I heard once, during the 1st. War there were a couple of ships in some division of the Royal Navy, named H.M.S. “LAUREL” & H.M.S. “HARDY”. I think they were Sub Chasers. Check on it for fun'. ‘….when I am playing your music….' LISZT FRANZ: (1811-1886) Hungarian Composer, Pianist & Conductor. A fine A.L.S., F Liszt, two pages, 8vo, n.p. (Weimar), 14th April 1857, to 'Dear Friend' (David Hermann Engel), in German. Liszt informs his colleague that their concert will take place next Wednesday, the 22nd, and he hopes to have the pleasure of seeing him at the general rehearsal. The composer also states that his indisposition has not yet passed '& I still have to spend half of the day in bed but you shall not perceive anything of it when I am playing your music'. In a postscript Liszt adds that Engel will 'hear more definitely about the rehearsal shortly'. Further annotated at the foot in ink in the hand of Engel's wife, in German, in full 'This letter refers to a concert given in the theatre at Weimar & at which Liszt's "Symphony Prometheus" & my husband's Oratorio "Winfried" were performed'. A letter of interesting association. Accompanied by a contemporary English translation. A couple of light creases and very minor age wear, VG David Hermann Engel (1816-1877) German Organist & Composer. The Library of Congress hold a number of Liszt letters, including several written within days of the present letter, which were published as Franz Liszt Studies Series No. 10 (Pendragon Press, New York, 2003). Their letter LC116, originally from the Rosenthal Collection, was written to Franz Brendel on 12th April 1857, and also refers directly to the same concert as the present letter. In a footnote to their letter LC117, written by Liszt to Engel in June 1857 and referring to Winfried, the editor, Michael Short, makes the presumption that the oratorio was not performed in April 1857 as originally planned. The present letter, with Engel's wife's statement, would appear to show that the concert did indeed occur. Provenance: The present letter originates from the autograph collection of Arthur Bryant Triggs (1868-1936) Australian Grazier & Collector.
