Nicole Freres: A Swiss inlaid rosewood music box, circa 1856-57Of rectangular outline, the top inlaid with a marquetry panel of scrolling foliage, the movement stamped Nicoel Freres and numbered 33525, playing eight airs from range number 1485, with winding key.43cm wideFootnote:Nicole Frères were recognized makers of quality musical boxes in Geneva, Switzerland. They were established 1815 and continued in production until 1881 when the business closed on being purchased by a Mr. Charles Brun and transferred to London. Over the years the Geneva business produced some 48,000 cylinder musical boxes, the exact number is not known.Condition:The case has been professionally and sensitively cleaned and restored. There are four small areas of fill to the marquetry panel. Small chips to the base of the case at the back adjacent to the right 'foot'. Movement winds, runs and cycles through the airs. The comb is in good order with evidence of five teeth being replaced. The music card is intact, in original condition with some creasing to the top left corner.

A separate section of wrapper is inscribed in ink 'Cards that King Charles & Queen Catherine played with'. A further note states 'Cards that King Charles and Queen Catherine played with at my great Grandfathers Mr Amherst of Riverhead in their way to Tunbridge Wells. Margaret Perkins'. Both pieces of wrapper and the note have been mounted on backing paper, one has a 'GR crowned' watermark.The Mr Amherst in question is almost certainly Jeffery Amherst (1649-1713) a lawyer who lived at Brook or Brooks Place, Riverhead. His father John Amherst (1619-1691) who was also a lawyer, was financially successful and and had political ambitions standing for parliament unsucessfully for Seaford in 1671. Jeffery married Elizabeth Yate in 1670 and had eight children. Their daughter Margaret married a John Seyliard and they had five children, their daughter Annabella marries John Perkins but she died without issue. John Perkins then marries the widow of Annabella's brother Thomas Seyliard. They have two children, a son John and a daughter Margaret Perkins, who wrote the note in the late 18th century stating that the playing cards were played with by King Charles II and Queen Catherine of Bragana. Queen Catherine by all acoounts was a keen card player and they could well have stayed with the Amhersts on they way to Tunbridge Wells c.1663.

Indian / Royal Interest: VERNON & CO. Souvenir, The Imperial Visit to Delhi. Calcutta: Bombay, Vernon & Co, [1912]. the album with 85 individual gelatin silver prints of various sizes on 26 grey heavy card mounts, including a panorama of the Coronation Durbar on five sections, the larger prints mounted mostly one-per-page, others mounted in various patterns, each page with printed tissue interleaves bearing titles and the Vernon & Co. imprint. Original red calf gilt, the covers elaborately bordered in gilt, overall 40 x 52cm A record of the Coronation Durbar and the tour made by King George V and Queen Mary to Dehli in 1912. This copy was probably given to Sir William Wilson Hunter at Christmas, 1912, by Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji, the Maharaja Jam Sahib of Nawanagar (1872-1933), one of the foremost cricket batsmen in England. Ranjitsinhji, as Maharaja and famous international cricketer, played his part in the Dehli celebrations. Ranjitsinhji moved easily between India and Britain, kept a house on the Thames in Middlesex and was very much part of the international set. As a cricketer he was the first Indian to win a Cambridge blue, in 1893, and appeared in four Test series against Australia, playing at his best between 1899 and 1904. He left England in 1904, returning to India, but did play in County cricket in 1912.Sir William Wilson Hunter KCSI CIE (15 July 1840 – 6 February 1900) was a Scottish historian, statistician, a compiler and a member of the Indian Civil Service.He is most known for The Imperial Gazetteer of India on which he started working in 1869, and which was eventually published in nine volumes in 1881, then fourteen, and later as a twenty-six volume set after his death.***CONDITION REPORT***Gilt morocco binding scuffed around the eddges of the front board, damaged along the sides of the spine, with further scratching and scuffing to the back, most of the pages with varying degrees of foxing around the edges, title sheets in most cases are now loose, some a little creased but all seem to be present, photographs range in size from 11 x 20cm to 28 x 34cm with one notable panorama titled 'General View at the Durbar Indians collecting dust', which measures 18.5 x 142cm and is torn to the left of one of the sections. 'Kathiawar Tour of His Excellency Sir George Sydenham Clarke, Governor of Bombay, 1910', a leather bound album of photographs by Bourne & Shepherd, presentation copy to Sir William Hunter from Ranjitsinghi of Nawanagar, the album with 160 individual gelatin silver prints of various, the larger prints mounted mostly one-per-page, others mounted in various patterns, each page with printed interleaves bearing titles, with inscription dated 1911-1912 to W.S. Hunter Esq. from Ranjitsinghi of Nawanagor, Original red calf and cloth, sold with a Christmas card to Sir William Hunter from Thakore Sahib Sir Daulat Singh of Limbdi, Kathiawar, in original envelope postmarked 1911, 47 x 37cm A fascinating record of the Kathiawar Tour of His Excellency Sir George Sydenham Clarke, Governor of Bombay in 1910. This copy was given to Sir William Wilson Hunter at Christmas, 1912, by Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji, the Maharaja Jam Sahib of Nawanagar (1872-1933), one of the foremost cricket batsmen in England. PPRWA (1915-2012) Portrait of Professor Robert Donington, playing the Viola de Gambaoil on canvassigned and dated 194860 x 50cm Robert Donington (1907-1990) was educated at St Paul's School, London, and studied at the University of Oxford. His expert knowledge of early instruments and the interpretation of pre-classical music owed much to a period of study with Arnold Dolmetsch at Haslemere, Surrey. He was appointed OBE in the 1979 Birthday Honours.In the late 1940's Donington shared a studio with his friend Julian Trevelyan. Here he met Mary Fedden and although already married became enamoured with her. By repute in an effort to cool his pursuit of Mary his wife encouraged him to commission work from her and thus place their relationship on a more professional basis. Mary painted his portrait as well as a view of Robert's holiday home, a converted fishermans' hut at Cadgwith. He also acquired a further work from her; 'The Lion and the Lamb'. A good Japanese tsuishu (carved red lacquer) four case inro, by Yosei, and a similar manju netsuke, 19th century, carved in high relief with immortals in a garden, the reverse with ladies playing Go beneath a pine tree, on a brocaded ground, with tsuishu and tsuio (red and yellow lacquer) scrollwork borders and a seal script signature ‘Yosei saku’ to one end, black lacquer interior, 8.8cm, the manju carved in high relief with irises on a brocade ground, unsigned, 4.2cm, together with a silver ojime cast in relief with rocks, fungus and irises, engraved three character maker’s mark, 1.9cm***CONDITION REPORT***The inro and manju are in good condition, with no chips, cracks or restoration. A Swiss bells in view music box,late 19th to early 20th century, the 9.4cm cylinder playing six ayres, complete with three bells, with polychrome moth hammers, and lyre form tune marker, 37.5cm wide25cm deep17.5cm highCondition ReportThe tune card is missing. No visible teeth missing to the comb. The leavers do not immediately change repeat and are a little temperamental. Strikes and plats but cannot guarantee it will continue. Knocks and wear to the case. Only the central bell seen striking.

A pair of 19th century continental, likely French, twin handled lidded urns / vases, along with a Minton & Hollins Imari style platter and an early 19th century Dutch plate marked 'Pas Op Keese'. Each vase with intricate hand painted scenes of a gent playing a lyre reclining with a lady, gilt detail to finial lid and handles. All atop blue pedestal base. The Imari plate in shades of pink, turquoise and blue, marked to base 'Hindostan Japan No. 2160'. The Dutch plate featuring a central figure of dog wearing collar marked 'Pas Op Keese' to bottom (a.f.). Measuring approx. 27cm tall, Imari style plate approx. 24cm in diameter.

He played Nicholas II of Russia in the film Nicholas and Alexandra (1971). He has also made many television appearances, which have included playing the Valeyard in all fourteen episodes of the Doctor Who serial The Trial of a Time Lord (1986) and appearing in the Only Fools and Horses episode "Time on Our Hands" (1996) as Raquel's father, James.
