ATTLEE, Clement (1883-1967). As It Happened, London, 1954, 8vo, illustrations, original cloth. Reprint. ANNOTATED AND HIGHLIGHTED IN PENCIL BY ANTHONY EDEN THROUGHOUT.ATTLEE, Clement Richard (1883-1967).  As It Happened. London: William Heinemann Ltd., 1954, 8vo (215 x 140mm). Half title, half tone frontispiece portrait of the author, half tone illustrations. Original scarlet cloth, spine lettered in gilt (spine faded, without the dust-jacket). Provenance: Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon (modern armorial bookplate loosely-inserted). "First published 1954. Reprinted 1954" (from verso of title). ANNOTATED AND HIGHLIGHTED IN PENCIL BY ANTHONY EDEN THROUGHOUT. For example, on p.90 (commenting on Attlee's speech to the Geneva Institute of International Relations in 1934), Eden writes: "Playing party politics while an official, as no doubt in [the remainder illegible] ..."; on p.96 (commenting on the printed passage 'following the First World War when it had been laid down that there was no danger of war for ten years'): "Winston's ten year rule"; on p.105 (commenting on Attlee's recuperation in North Wales when Germany invaded Poland): "I had forgotten he was away"; on p.165 (commenting on opposition to the nationalisation of the iron and steel industries): "He [i.e. Attlee] always attributes the lowest motivation to his opponents & assumes the highest in himself"; on p.170 (commenting on Marshall Aid): "& I who suggested it to Ernie [Bevin] in his room in the House"; and on p.172 (commenting on Attlee's claim that Western Europe 'is today a collection of disunited elements lying between two great continental Powers'): "Much stronger than that." In 1955, Attlee contested the general election against Anthony Eden who was seeking a mandate as the new leader of the Conservative Party following Churchill's retirement in April of the same year. It resulted in a victory for the Conservatives who achieved the largest party share of the vote at a post-war election: a triumphant vindication for Eden. Attlee, having led the Labour Party for an unparalleled twenty years and widely regarded as one of Britain's greatest 20th-century Prime Ministers, retired as Leader of the Labour Party to enter the House of Lords as Earl Attlee and Viscount Prestwood. He was succeeded by Hugh Gaitskell.A note on the illustrations in the Anthony & Clarissa Eden section of this catalogue (lots 1-89). Anthony Eden, like any true bibliophile, annotated his books almost entirely in pencil. Consequently, they can be a little difficult to read in the illustrations. They are generally much clearer to read in the books themselves and many of the more significant are recorded verbatim in the descriptions.

Spender (Sir Stephen, poet, 1909-1995) Autograph Letter signed "Stephen" to John Morris, Head of the Far Eastern Service of the BBC, 1½pp. & envelope, 4to, Albergo, Verona, [Italy], 18th June [1951], "It happens that as Wystan [WH Auden] was staying with us, I was the last person telephoned by Guy Burgess, who wanted to see him. On this occasion, he made the harmless remark that World Within World exactly expressed his own views about politics, which I thought might as well be reported. Apart from this I know nothing of him, for I have not seen him for at least five years. Just after this appeared, John Lehmann wrote me a letter saying I was wrong, for various reasons, about Guy. Two days ago, a Daily Express reporter turned up and to show him I knew nothing about Guy, I showed him John's letter, explaining that he must on no account quote it, but that his office should seek out John perhaps. However, they have now quoted it in the most sensational way possible. I feel an absolute cad...", folds, browned.⁂ Stephen Spender on Guy Burgess.Spender's friend and fellow poet, WH Auden was suspected of playing a part in the escape to Moscow of Burgess and Maclean. He had known Burgess for 20 years (they were at Cambridge together) and he had been at school with Maclean.Guy Burgess (1911-63), spy.John Lehmann (1907-87), publisher and author.

Autographs of Geronimo are extremely rare and highly desirable. Some light age wear and two small traces of former mounting to the upper corners, not affecting the signature. About VG Burns D. Caldwell (1858-1922) American businessman, president of the Wells Fargo Express Company and chairman of the board of the American Railway Express Company. Geronimo attained celebrity status during his lifetime and he became a regular attraction at events and fairs including the Pan-American Exposition at Buffalo, New York in 1901, the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904 and Pawnee Bill's Wild West Shows, where he appeared under Army guard. Geronimo dressed in traditional clothing on such occasions, posed for photographs, provided autographs and souvenirs, and sold his crafts.  The present signature links two of the major household names of America's Wild West - Geronimo and Wells Fargo, the latter being the company that handled express service to western states, and were often robbed.  Provenance: From the autograph collection of Frank Dyche (d.1944) and his wife Grace Scripps Dyche (1863-1924). Frank Dyche, a prominent Chicago attorney, married Grace Scripps in 1896. Grace was the daughter of John Locke Scripps (1818-1866), editor of the Chicago Tribune, and his wife Mary E. Scripps (1825-1866). The Scripps have been described as 'one of the oldest and most influential families of American journalism' who 'occupied a unique place in nineteenth-century America'.
