Lot 497

A North Italian, probably Venetian, polychrome painted terracotta model of Balthazar, 18th century, the turbaned King portrayed standing in elaborate costume and drapery, holding a box of myrrh, flanked by an attendant carrying an urn, on a naturalistically modelled rockwork base, 32cm high, 22cm wideThe subject's princely costume and attributes of a casket and urn suggest this statuette represents St Balthazar, one of the three magi, who is often depicted as a black king. The medium of terracotta, both for artists' models and independent works, rose to popularity among sculptors and connoisseurs during the 18th century. The tactile, pliable quality of the material was by some considered to convey the artist's 'fire' and talent in a more direct way than marble could. The medium proved particularly popular for small-scale portrait and genre sculpture, as is the case with the present lot. Statuettes of this kind with elaborate costume and vibrant polychromy were often produced in Venice, note for example the 18th century models of characters from the Commedia dell'Arte in the collection of the the Museo della Scala in Milan.Further literature: in relation to the development of small-scale terracotta sculpture, see J. Draper and G. Scherf, Playing with Fire: European Terracotta Models, 1740-1840, Metropolitan Museum, 2003For a similar single figure model of King Balthazar also portrayed carrying a box of myrrh, see Sotheby's Paris, 17 June 2015, lot 191 (EUR 3000).Condition Report: The model bears the usual minor marks, knocks and scuffs overall consistent with age, and some wear to the polychromy. Some minor chips and losses, including to the tip of the attendant's sword as well as the top of his head and his nose, and the back of the taller figure. Possible repainting to the boots. There is a circular aperture to the rear of the taller figure. The base is a naturally irregular shape and does not sit entirely flush when placed on a flat surface, though it is entirely stable.Condition Report Disclaimer

An unusual and rare 18K gold manual wind reversible wristwatchModel: Tank BasculanteDate: Circa 1941Movement: 19-jewel rectangular Cartier manual wind, bi-metallic compensation balance, adjusted to temperature & 2 positions, No.15961Dial: White, black Roman numerals, black inner minute track, blued steel sword handsCase: Brushed and polished hinged reversible rectangular, crown below 6, No.48304Strap/Bracelet: Associated black alligatorBuckle/Clasp: 18K gold deployant clasp, stamped 17663 and EJ in lozenge with sand glassSigned: Dial & movement, case stamped with an EJ in lozengeSize: 20mm x 31mm Accompaniments: Amsterdam Watch Company CertificateFootnotes:The Tank Basculante was first designed in 1932 and was aimed at an elite clientele looking to protect their timepieces from impact whilst predominantly playing sport. The case is composed of 3 parts allowing the central body to be inverted in order to present a smooth solid case back thus protecting the more vulnerable glass side. Due to its similar first introduction date, the Tank Basculante is often compared with the 1931 Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. Although sharing a similar goal and developed by the same company Spécialités Horlogers, the Basculante differs from the Reverso in several key ways. In particular the method used to invert the case on the Basculante is via a swinging frame that pulls the central body out towards you before flipping and replacing. In comparison the Reverso is set within a track that allows you to slide the body out to the side before turning over. The original production of the Basculante was quite limited and after a brief revival in the 90s the model has gone back into retirement. The current lot represents therefore a rare opportunity to own a very stylish timepiece from a fun and experimental chapter in the history of early Cartier Tanks. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the EU, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

The law was repealed in 1872. After some time away from Commons he was reelected in 1885 and remained until his death. He opposed Gladsonte's Home Rule bills (source: Ian Mc Shane, "William Johnston of Ballykillbeg" on OrangeNet site) - BS.The radial streak in the Orange Society's activity was represented by William Johnston of Ballykilbeg House, the Grand Master of County Down, who in March 1868, was sentenced to a month's imprisonment for marching, in defiance of the Party Processions Act, from Newtownards to Bangor at the head of a crowd of twenty to thirty thousand with beating drums, orange flags and a band playing the "Protestant Boys" and other provocative tunes.
