Whilst taking cover, the look out reported the Infantry S.O.S rocket and without a moment's hesitation Lance called out "Come on boys, they're looking to us for help" and sending a few gunners with him to one gun, he, another Subaltern, a Sergeant and a Corporal made an impromptu crew and manned another. VIC GROVES COLLECTION The following 71 lots were the possession of Vic Groves who started his career at Leytonstone and then briefly as an amateur for Tottenham Hotspur, scoring twice on his debut v Liverpool, before signing professional forms with Leyton Orient in 1954. Arsenal signed him in November 1955 for £23,000, at the time a very high figure and he scored on his debut against Sheffield United on 12 November 1955. Groves was later made Arsenal captain, following the departure of Dave Bowen. His spell at Arsenal was continually hampered by injury; although when he did play, he was impressive enough so that he was selected for the London XI that played (and lost to) Barcelona in the first Inter-Cities Fairs Cup final in 1958. He stayed at Arsenal until the summer of 1964, when he left to sign for Southern League side Canterbury City. In all he played 201 times for Arsenal, scoring 37 goals. Although he represented England at amateur and youth level, he never won a full cap. Whilst a player, Groves ran a garage, just off Blackstock Road, close to the Arsenal ground. After retiring from playing Groves left the game completely, running a pub and working in insurance. FOOTBALL CLUB LETTERS Official club letters chasing the signature of Vic Groves from Chelmsford City 27/6/1948 and Fulham 30/6/1948 before he signed for Leytonstone, 2 letters from Bolton Wanderers contacting him to see if he has interested in signing and the other offering to play in a private trial match and a selection card for the match including the tear off section which was not returned to Bolton.
