A late 19th century Indian papier mache gaming box, black lacquer with gilt floral urn and basket decoration within trellis spandrels, the fitted interior with two open trays, four rectangular lidded boxes, a large box, six playing card trays with gilt and polychrome decoration depicting the Jack, King, Queen, nine of diamonds, ace of diamonds and one with overlapping circles, the base section with gilt foliate swag decoration, the boxes containing a fine collection of mother of pearl counters bearing the original owner's initials, 13 x 9¾in. (33 x 24.75cm.), also containing an ivory geometric puzzle, vegetable ivory cup and ball with treen handle and spillikins. * Provenance: Made in India for Dr. Stephen Mathews of Goudhurst, Kent, a physician to the East India Company, the counters bearing his initials.
λAn early 18th century silver and mother-of-pearl snuff box, maker's mark of E.K, circa 1720-40, oval form, the hinged cover with a carved mother-of-peal plaque of a lady dancing and a gentleman playing a musical instrument, plain sides, the underside of the base with a cipher, the interior with a painted ivory panel of a lady sitting in front of a dressing table mirror, length 7.8cm.
A Birmingham enamel rectangular snuff box, c.1760-65, painted to the interior lid with a portrait of the actress, Mrs Mary Brooks (nθe L'Hereux), the exterior with four figures seated around a table and playing cards, within a raised gilt scroll cartouche on a dark blue ground, the sides with panels of landscapes on a similar ground, gilt metal mounts, 8.2cm across. The source for the portrait of Mrs Brooks is a mezzotint by Richard Houston, after Thomas Worlidge. Mary L'Hereux married the Irish engraver, John Brooks, in 1756, but he was made bankrupt three years later. Mrs Brooks turned to acting in order to support herself and her three children. Cf. A Chelsea gold-mounted bonbonniθre, c.1760, modelled as three children and a dog playing on a grassy mound, the girl covering one eye as she peeps into a kaleidoscope or similar instrument, the boy who holds it wearing a sash inscribed 'La Curiousitι Des Belles', the mound base applied with flowers and leaves, the interior painted with polychrome flower sprays, the gold mount with rococo scrolls and flowers, the hinged lid formed of a panel of polished hardstone, 5.5cm high. Cf. G E Bryant, The Chelsea Porcelain Toys, pl.47, no.5 for a similar example in the British Museum.
