Lot 320

BIG FOUR THE: A very fine, large vintage signed sepia 16 x 14.5 photograph by three members of The Big Four (also referred to as the Council of Four) individually, all of them being leaders of the top Allied powers of World War I, comprising Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924, American President 1913-21, responsible for leading the United States during World War I), David Lloyd George (1863-1945, British Prime Minister 1916-22, playing an important role in Coalition government during and immediately after World War I) and Georges Clemenceau (1841-1929, French Prime Minister 1909-09, 1917-20 who favoured a total victory of the German Empire in World War I and, before his second term as Prime Minister, was a vehement critic of the war-time French government, asserting that they were not doing enough to win the war). The image depicts the three men, accompanied by Vittorio Emanuele Orlando (1860-1952, Italian Prime Minister 1917-19), in full length poses candidly engaged in conversation as they stand on the steps of the Hotel de Crillon on 27th May 1919 during the Paris Peace Conference, the main result of which was the Treaty of Versailles with Germany. Photograph by Edward N. Jackson for the United States Army Signal Corps. Signed by Wilson, Lloyd George and Clemenceau in dark fountain pen inks with their names alone to the lower border immediately beneath their respective images. A rare and historic signed photograph. Some very light surface and corner creasing and a few extremely minor stains, none of which affect the signatures. VG Although the Armistice, signed on 11th November 1918, ended the actual fighting of World War I, it was to take six months of Allied negotiations at the Paris Peace Conference to create five peace treaties with the defeated states. The most important of these was the Treaty of Versailles, signed on 28th June 1919, exactly five years after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand which had directly led to World War I.  The Paris Peace Conference had opened on 18th January 1919 and it was towards the end of negotiations that the present photograph of 'The Big Four' was taken. The Allied leaders of America, Great Britain, France and Italy met informally together over 140 times and made all of the major decisions, later ratified by the other participating countries and nationalities.  Although seen in the present photograph, it seems fitting that Vittorio Emanuele Orlando did not sign this image as he was not a signatory to the Treaty of Versailles either. The Italian Prime Minister had dramatically left the peace conference early in April 1919, and, although he returned briefly the following month, he was forced to resign just days before the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. The fact that he was not a signatory to the Treaty became a point of pride for him later in his life.

A pair of French gilt bronze standard oil lamps in the Pompeiian Revival taste, late 19th century, the burners and reservoirs set within urns with cast scenes depicting mythological or allegorical figures, with putti playing pan pipes perched atop feline masks suspending ring handles, the circular base with grotesque masks on reeded shafts with palmette detail, each on three monopodia with paw feet interspersed with anthemia, 175 cm high including fitments CATALOGUE NOTES; During the second half of the nineteenth century, the Roman city of Pompeii was more alive than it had ever been since the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius had destroyed it in 79AD. Excavations commenced in 1748 under King Carlo di Borbone of the two Sicilies, and were steadily advancing during the nineteenth century, when pioneering archaeologist Giuseppe Fiorelli took the lead. As more murals and objects were unearthed, the bronze foundries of Europe found great inspiration in the aesthetic of these ancient finds. The present floor lamps strongly reflect this Pompeian 'look' not just in the mythological scenes cast on the urn oil reservoirs, but also in the paw feet, grotesque masks, palmette leaves and anthemia. This style of lamp is also reproduced in the Chiurazzi Foundry illustrated catalogue, who were renowned for producing bronze models after the Antique from museum collections and excavation sites. Please refer to J.Chiurazzi & Fils, Fournisseurs de Cours et Musees, Milan, 1900, for similar models, particularly nos. 163-171

Lot 96

‡ A pair of parcel gilt and patinated bronze vases in the Neo-Grec taste by Ferdinand Barbedienne and Ferdinand Levillain, circa 1875, of baluster form, the beaded and patterned rims above relief cast figural friezes to the waisted neck, depicting human labour, possibly the Labours of the Months, the bodies each with a maiden in Grecian attire carrying fruit and vegetables and a nude male carrying fishing nets, with cast birds, foliage and Bacchic masks, on a circular base, inscribed F. BARBEDIENNE on the base and F. LEVILLAIN on the body, 48 cm high CATALOGUE NOTES: Ferdinand Levillain (1837-1905) began his long career as a master bronze artist as an apprentice in the studio of sculptor Francois Jouffroy. In 1861, while still in his early twenties, Levillain was already exhibiting at the Paris Salon, where his work would continue to appear until 1903. Levillain's efforts as a bronze sculptor, primarily in the Neo-Grec style, did not go unnoticed. Levillain was granted a silver medal at the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle, and was even made a Chevalier of the Legion d'Honneur. Several of his bronzes, adorned with Neoclassical motifs similar to the present vases, are currently held by major international museum collections, including the Musee d'Orsay, Paris and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. These vases exemplify the sculptor's fruitful collaboration with bronzier Ferdinand Barbedienne, which started in 1871 and continued until circa 1890. The rich figural decoration across the vases showcases Levillain's ability to construct a narrative on the bronze surface, and to create depth and interest in his designs by playing with varying degrees of relief. The figures depicted hark back to Antiquity, and are shown engaged in different labours including hunting and harvesting. Though the larger figures on the main body of the vases are engaged in similar efforts, carrying fruit and fish, they appear graceful and statuesque. Their classical rendition clearly demonstrates Levillain's education as a sculptor, which in the nineteenth century was still strongly informed by the Academic practice of copying models from Antiquity and the Renaissance. The 1886 catalogue of works offered by Barbedienne’s gallery on 30 Boulevard Poissonniere lists several vases ‘Grecques’, and 'Etrusques’ by Levillain. This list also records a ‘Vase Agriculture’. Though it is hard to say with certainty whether this unillustrated list records the present model, the reference to the theme of agriculture, which is prominent on these vases, certainly makes this a possibility. Collas, Catalogue des Bronzes d’Art, Paris: 1886, later republished Chicago: Abage publishing, 2002, p. 20 James Mackay, The Dictionary of Sculptors in Bronze, Woodbridge: Antique Collectors' Club, 1992, p. 235 Similar Greek Revival taste bronze vases were sold at Sotheby's New York on 26 April 2017 (Luxe: the Art of the Table) and on 15 April 2011 (19th Century Furniture, Sculpture, Ceramics, Silver & Works of Art).Another pair of vases by Levillain in the same taste was sold at Christie's New York, 500 Years: Decorative Arts Europe Including Oriental Carpets, on 18-19 April 2012 â€¡ Indicates that the lot is being sold whilst subject to temporary importation and that VAT is due at the reduced rate (5%). PLEASE PLEASE ME - 1ST UK STEREO PRESSING LP (PCS 3042). The ultimate for any serious Beatles fan, a well presented 1st UK 'black and gold' pressing of the iconic debut LP. With Dick James credits for tracks A1, 2, 6, 7, B4 and 6. Matrix/stampers: YEX 94-1 1 G & YEX 95-1 1 R. Side 1 is in Ex condition. There are a few light surface and hairline markings to the glossy playing surface with absolutely nothing heavier than this to note. With a very neat label showing a few spindle markings. Side 2 is in VG+ condition. There is one primarily hairline mark that somewhat 'meanders' between B3 and B7 - at no point does it extend deeper than a surface marking with no feelable scratches to mention whatsoever. The label (ZMT tax code) is in very clean order once again showing little deterioration to the striking colour. The 1st UK (right aligned Angus McBean credit) sleeve is in VG+ condition. A clean front laminated example, there are a couple of creases to the laminate. The reverse flipback design has some minor damage to the bottom left hand side and appears slightly frayed. A fine example.

Lot 72

PLEASE PLEASE ME - 1ST UK BLACK & GOLD STEREO PRESSING LP (PCS 3042) - WITH 2ND MONO SLEEVE. A unique chance for a serious Beatles collector here - a superb condition 1st UK ‘black and gold’ stereo pressing LP housed with a 2nd UK mono sleeve. With Dick James credits for tracks A1, 2, 6, 7, B4 and 6. The record is in stunning Ex+ condition. The playing surfaces contain just a couple of extremely light, faint and wispy markings that are only visible when held to a strong light source. Exquisite, glossy and almost without fault! The labels match the condition of the record with virtually no wear and only a couple of extremely faint and almost impossible to detect spindle markings indicating that the record has only been played a handful of times. The sleeve (2nd UK 'left aligned' Angus McBean credit) is in superlative Ex+ condition - there are just a couple of very light creases to the laminate on the front. The vendor told us that he had bought the record from his local record shop where they kept the records separate to the sleeves, i.e. it was down to the server to match up the record with the correct sleeve - unfortunately they made an error with this copy; perhaps you have the sleeve to make this surely one of the finest examples known to exist?

Lot 93

SGT PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND - ORIGINAL UK STEREO PRESSING LP (PCS 7027). A very clean original UK stereo pressing (PCS 7027 -1/-1 'Sold In UK', 'The Gramophone Co.' label text and 'Printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd.' sleeve text) of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The record is in Ex condition - lovely, clean and glossy, there just a couple of light and minor surface markings to the playing surface. Crisp and clean labels with some light spindle markings. Complete with the red swirl inner and unused cut out insert. PETER & GORDON - NOBODY I KNOW - 7" EMIDISC ACETATE. Perhaps unique UK single sided 7" Emidisc acetate of the popular duo Peter & Gordon performing this Lennon/McCartney composition. The playing surface is in VG condition with surface markings though nothing heavier with no scratches. The label (which is somewhat faded) has the following hand written: 2.28 Nobody I Know, 45, G.E, Peter & Gordon.

Lot 120

SELTAEB 10" ACETATES. Extraordainary selection of 5 x Regent Sound Studios 10" acetate recordings. Four years before Apple was founded, plans were being made to set up a Seltaeb label (for which the vendor's stepfather James Hamilton was briefly recruited as a talent scout). These demos are the only known surviving physical manifestations of that label. All the records are single sided 7" recordings cut onto 10" aluminium lacquer discs. These recordings feature Dick Glass singing and playing his guitar. The lot included Cocaine Blues (brilliant Ex+ condition showing little signs of play), You Turn Me On (2 copies both presented in Ex+ condition) and Down On Your Knees (in similar Ex+ condition). All records have 'ANIM Music' hand written on the labels. All housed with very clean Transeco 'A Sound Invenstment' company sleeve and all housed in (crossed out address) Seltaeb envelope. Lyrically speaking, it's extraordinary that these songs were ever considered suitable for a label bearing an association with a band who were still in their clean-cut Fab 4 phase. "You Turn Me On" and "Down On Your Knees" are raunchy enough, but the cover of "Cocaine Blues" by Reverend Gary Davies is startlingly explicit in its drug references. The lyrics are a near total re-write from the original, adding knowing references to amphetamines, marijuana and mescaline for good measure. It makes you wonder what was going on the Beatles camp, even just ahead of the band's first meeting with Bob Dylan (August 1964) which allegedly introduced them to cannabis...

Lot 18

WITH THE BEATLES - UK STEREO 1ST. A great 1st UK stereo pressing of the 1963 masterpiece (PCS 3045 -2 2 RG & -2 1 M with 'Jobete' credit for Money and 'Gotta' on sleeve and label. The record is in ace Ex condition with just a couple of rather minor and light hairline markings to the playing surfaces. Lovely clean labels with the original Emitex inner too. The sleeve is in superb Ex+ condition - little wear showing which is especially impressive on the reverse flipback design, there is just one minor crease to the laminate on the front. Monster copy.

Lot 20

PLEASE PLEASE ME - UK STEREO 1ST PRESSING LP. A neatly presented 1st UK stereo pressing of the record that will be the forefront of any Beatles collection! This is the 1st stereo pressing (PCS 3042) with Dick James credits for all McCartney/Lennon compositions with matrix/stampers YEX 94-1 1G & 95-1 1R. Side 1 is in solid VG condition with some scuff/surface markings that are largely noted at the start of the side. The record here plays very well indeed without any major disturbance; there are no pops, skips or jumps with only a little light surface noise (a playback grading of VG+ would be appropriate). Side 2 is in VG+ condition with only a couple of light and minor surface markings. There are no scratches to the playing surfaces at all. ZMT tax code on side 2 label. The labels are in clean order with no heavy spindle markings or deterioration to them. With original Emitex inner. The 1st pressing ('right' aligned Angus McBean credit) sleeve is in solid VG condition. There is some light peeling to the bottom left side of the reverse with a small paper tear on the top right side of the reverse which can also be seen on the top left side of the front. Aside from this, a clean example with a little laminate wear.
