RICHARD PRINCE (AMERICAN B.1949) COWBOY (FROM THE 'COWBOYS AND GIRLFRIENDS' PORTFOLIO), 1992Signed with initials verso, from an edition of 26, C-print, unframed (Dimensions: Image size: 40cm x 58cm (15.75in x 22.75in), sheet size: 51.5cm x 61cm (20.25in x 24in))Note: The New York Times has described the contemporary American artist Richard Prince, as ‘one of the most revered artists of his generation.’ His work has met with huge critical acclaim and popular success but, as with all of the most successful contemporary artists, Prince’s work has courted some controversy. His breakthrough series Cowboys was created using a technique of re-photography; with the artist selecting existing imagery that appealed to him and re-photographing it, sometimes cropping out promotional text or adjusting and cropping the composition before presenting the new photograph in a fine art context. The original series, and ensuing explorations of other distinctly American groups and subcultures, including bikers and their girlfriends, launched Prince’s career. Yet, on occasion, ethical and legal disputes have arisen from photographers who feel their work has been unfairly used and profited upon by the artist. With re-photography, the artist’s eye and his process of selection becomes the aesthetic action and Prince himself has described his process as similar to beach-combing or going into the studio and ‘bumping into things.’ This sense of sifting through huge volumes of imagery and ideas to select a very specific few is a particular skill and way of working that the artist developed whilst working at Time Life ’s cutting service, where he also gained a deep familiarity with advertising imagery. As an artistic practice, Prince started using re-photography in 1977, and at that time then disowned all his previous artistic work. All artistic choices and processes are important, yet it seems especially valid to explore the meanings and suggestions of Prince’s selected imagery, as it is the selection rather than any creation that is his artistic labour. Cowboys was his breakthrough series, and the cowboy, in particular, is a distinctly American view of masculinity. By selecting them as his subject, Prince at once celebrates the fantasy and icon, while also exposing its unreality, particularly as many of his cowboy images are taken from Marlborough advertising campaigns, where the original images were taken by photographers hired by the company to create such fantasy imagery, and often featured posed models rather than real men living this lifestyle. More recently Prince has turned his attention to social media, spending hours sifting through the profusion of media online before re-photographing and captioning Instagram photographs, playing around with a blurring and then distinction between selfies, self-portraits and portraiture. Time will tell whether these 21 st century images will endure and captivate as much as the Cowboys series has.

Lot 36

MIKE STUART SPAN - CHILDREN OF TOMORROW 7" - ORIGINAL UK DEMO (JEWEL RECORDS - JL 01). Stonking double header from the late 60s Psych outfit from Brighton, this the original UK 7" demo on tiny Melodisc subsidiary Jewel Records (white labels/black A, JL 01). Please note the record is in G condition with a number of surface marks and a few light scratches to the playing surfaces. Play tested, there is surface noise throughout though this is not too overpowering with no skips/jumps.

Lot 64

THE GAME - GONNA GET ME SOMEONE 7" - ORIGINAL UK DEMO (DECCA - F 12469). Another top rarity from The Game, this c/w the mega 'Gotta Wait'. This is a wonderful condition original UK demo on Decca (blue/silver 'A' labels, F 12469). The record is in superlative Ex+ or 'NM' condition - the playing surfaces and labels in supremely clean order, there are just a couple of extremely faint, minor and wispy paper marks noted. Complete with Ex condition original company sleeve.

Lot 25

JIMI HENDRIX - THE CRY OF LOVE - UK RED VINYL PRESSING (TRACK RECORDS - 2408 101). The one that was never supposed to exist! Here's the excruciatingly rare red vinyl 'factory custom pressing' of Jimi's last album The Cry Of Love. It is thought that just 5 copies were produced on red vinyl (the colour moreover a cerise pink), pressed to test dealer reaction to coloured vinyl with a view to marketing the Pink Fairies LP Never Never Land. The few copies that have surfaced over the years have contained the side 2 label 'The Best Of Bert Kaempfert' on Polydor, this copy is perhaps unique in that it contains the 'correct' Track labels both sides. This copy indeed plays 'correctly'... The record is in fantastic Ex+ condition - both playing surfaces show few markings indicating that this copy has been played sparingly, the Track labels are sharp and clean with just a couple of very light spindle marks. Matrix (machine stamped)/runout: 2408101 A//1 1 1 1 5 & 2408101 B//1 1 2 2 3. Housed with the original stock UK pressing sleeve in Ex condition.

Lot 1

LED ZEPPELIN - LED ZEPPELIN 'I' (1ST UK 'SUPERHYPE/TURQUOISE LETTERING' PRESSING - ATLANTIC 588198). Very well presented 1st UK pressing of the hugely influential debut from Led Zep. Issued on Atlantic (588171) with the 'corrected' matrix: 588171 A//1 1 2 C 1 & 588171 B//1 1 'inverted' 1 1. The record is in VG+ condition - there are some light surface/hairline marks to the playing surfaces though at no point are these ever heavier in nature. With nice and clean labels showing some light spindle marks. The sleeve is in very well presented VG+ condition - a very fine example, there are some light and minor creases to the laminate noted, though nothing heavier with this sleeve looking very sharp indeed.

Lot 20

LIGHTYEARS AWAY/THUNDERMOTHER - ASTRAL NAVIGATIONS LP - ORIGINAL UK PRESSING WITH PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL (HOLYGROUND RECORDS - HG 114). The 1971 masterpiece split LP release from Lightyears Away and Thundermother, this the original UK pressing on Mike Levon's fantastic Holyground Records - this copy complete with correspondence between Mike Levon and Nathan Joseph of Transatlantic Records. The record is in very clean Ex condition - both playing sides lovely and glossy, there are just a couple of very fine and light hairline marks, none of which are ever heavier in nature. Complete with the booklet (VG+ condition with a light coffee stain on the front) and printed inner (VG+ condition, a few light creases). The handmade sleeve (numbered 000152) is in VG condition, the two pasted images in clean order, there is some ringwear and creasing noted. Complete with two typed letters, one from Mike Levon to Nathan Joseph at Transatlantic in which he details how he was trying to promote an album as well as Joseph's response. A wonderful album.

Lot 72

THE HIGH NUMBERS - ZOOT SUIT 7" - ORIGINAL UK PRESSING (FONTANA - TF 480). The legendary July 1964 7" from The High Numbers, 'who' in October of that year change their name to 'The Who'... This right here is an exceptional condition original UK pressing on Fontana (TF 480), the record presented in Ex+ or 'NM' condition. There are just a couple of trace-like, extremely faint wispy paper markings to the playing surfaces that can only really be witnessed under intense LED lighting. With the three pronged centre fully intact, the labels are in fantastic condition too - the release date '3/7' is written faintly on the A side label. Matrix/runout: 267364 1F ? 1 // 420 & 267364 2F ? 1 = 420.

Lot 46

THE ROLLING STONES - BETWEEN THE BUTTONS LP - ORIGINAL UK FACTORY SAMPLE TEST PRESSING (DECCA - LK 4852). Extraordinary to see original UK factory sample test pressing of the January 1967 LP from the Stones presented in mind blowing condition. Issued on blue 'Factory Sample Not For Sale' labels with hand written title/catalogue number/matrix information on the labels. The record is in supreme Ex+ or archive condition showing very few markings to the playing surfaces with the lack of any spindle markings indicating that this record has been played sparingly. Matrix/mother stampers: XARL-7644-6A 1 B & XARL-7645-6A 1 B. Housed with original Ex condition UK mono sleeve.

Lot 33

FANTASY - PAINT A PICTURE LP - ORIGINAL UK PRESSING (POLYDOR - 2383 246). Super fine condition original UK pressing of the stupendously hard to find 1973 LP from Fantasy. The record (Polydor 2383-246) is in tremendous Ex+ condition - the playing surfaces in archive condition showing very few markings even under intense LED lighting, there is some very minor foxing on the labels. The sleeve is in neat VG+ condition - an Ex grading would definitely apply if not for light tape residue down four of the edges ('opening side' and inside left and right sections of the gatefold) - this is not too heavy at all.

Lot 79

ELVIS PRESLEY - GOOD ROCKIN' TONIGHT 7" - ORIGINAL US PRESSING (SUN - SUN 210). Superb copy of this original Sun 45 Good Rockin' Tonight c/w I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine (Sun 210 with push markings noted on both sides). The record is in extremely fine Ex condition showing a few very light, fine and minor surface marks to the playing sides.. With outstanding clean and sharp labels. Lot 45

THE ROLLING STONES - (I CAN'T GET NO) SATISFACTION 7"" - ORIGINAL UK DEMO (DECCA - F 12220). The original 1965 UK 7" demo of (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction c/w The Spider And The Fly. The record is in strong Ex condition - both playing sides really nice and clean, there are just a couple of rather light and minor hairline markings, none of which are at all heavier in nature. With sharp and clean labels (minor wear on the B side) and the four prong centre fully intact. Housed with Ex+ condition original company sleeve.

Lot 31

PINK FLOYD - THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON LP - ORIGINAL UK 'SOLID BLUE' COPY (HARVEST - SHVL 804). Superb condition 1st UK 'solid blue' pressing of the iconic 1973 LP. The record is in Ex+ condition with only a few very faint, minor and wispy hairline markings to the playing surfaces. The labels are in very clean order. Matrix/mother stampers: SHVL 804 A-2 2 II II & SHVL 804 B-2 2 LP. Complete with both posters and stickers with original black inner all in excellent condition. The gatefold sleeve is in very neat Ex condition - a very fine example showing only very light wear, there are a couple of scuffs noted on the front, looking a little like the imprint left from a Rolling Stones 'Sticky Fingers' zip. These are not heavy markings at all.

Lot 9

CATAPILLA - CHANGES LP - ORIGINAL UK PRESSING (VERTIGO SWIRL 6360 074). A neat example of one of the 'biggest' Vertigo swirl LPs, the 1972 second LP from Catapilla (6360 074). The record is in very fine Ex condition - showing only a couple of extremely faint and wispy marks, there is some light 'poly bag residue' to the playing surfaces likely caused by the original swirl inner. The die-cut sleeve is strictly graded as G+ - always so tricky to find 'intact', there is a tear on the caterpillar, a professional repair would be a worthwhile investment. Elsewhere a nice and clean sleeve with no other rips/tears.

Lot 63

THE GAME - THE ADDICTED MAN 7" - ORIGINAL UK DEMO (PARLOPHONE - R 5553). Freakin' out with The Game now with these 2 monster tracks from 1966, this the immediately withdrawn (due to its drug references) original UK demo on Parlophone (green/white labels, R 5553) in mind-blowing condition. The record is in Ex+ or 'NM' condition - pretty much looking 'as new', there are but a couple of tiny and extremely faint wispy markings to the playing surfaces. Brill clean labels. Housed with Ex condition original company sleeve.

Lot 85

FESTIVAL (GODLEY-CREME) 7" ACETATE (APPLE CUSTOM RECORDING). A perhaps one-off single sided 7" 'Apple Custom Recording' acetate recording of the October 1972 single from Festival penned by Kevin Godley and Lol Creme and featuring Graham Gouldman. The single sided record is in well presented VG+ condition showing a few light surface markings, none of which are ever heavier in nature with very little wear showing to the aluminium lacquer. With '564' machine stamped on the non-playing side. The label is in very clean order. A fantastic piece of history for 10CC/Hotlegs collectors.

Lot 60

GALLERY - THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY LP - ORIGINAL UK PRESSING (MIDAS RECORDINGS - MFHR 046). A lovely original UK copy of one of the rarest albums from the British Folk underground scene from the early 1970s. The record is in fantastic Ex+ or 'NM' condition with only a couple of extremely minor, faint and wispy paper hairline markings to the playing surfaces. With very clean, crisp and sharp labels with just a couple of very light spindle marks. Machine stamped matrix MFHR 046 A1 & B1. The sleeve is in VG+ condition with a few light creases on the front and some light discolouration on the reverse.
