A folder of historically important ephemera from the personal collection of the lawn tennis player Mrs Dorothea Lambert Chambers (nee Douglas), seven times winner of the Ladies Singles Championship at Wimbledon between 1903 and 1914,the folder contains personal messages from family, friends and tennis personalities covering her lengthy career, with many focussed on her Wimbledon exploits, particularly the famous final against Suzanne Lenglen in 1919 which is still widely regarded by many commentators to have been the finest ever Ladies Singles Final, other material relates to her role as captain of the victorious 1925 Great Britain Wightman Cup team against the United States, an inventory of the archive is as follows: i) three small original photograph, including playing at Eastbourne, 1913, ii) congratulatory telegram for her first Wimbledon win in 1903 from "Martin"iii) personal letter, 1919, to Mrs Lambert Chambers from Mrs Blanche Hillyard, six time winner at Wimbledon between 1886 and 1900, ahead of her forthcoming Final v Suzanne Lenglen, July 1919, the tone of the letter is a remarkable insight into the psychology of a pioneering champion sportswoman, Mrs Hillyard imploring Dorothea to "... GO ALL YOU CAN AND NEVER GIVE UP, STICK TO HER 'TILL THE LAST ACE ... DIE HARD ... THANK GOD SHE DIDN'T LIVE IN MY DAY! ... I SHALL EVIL EYE HER ... Godfree) participation in the 1925 US Open, the latter reaching the final where she lost to Helen Willsxiii) Telegram from Fred Hawthorne, the famous New York Tribune sports correspondent, September 1925, sent to the SS Mauretania during the voyage home to England after the Wightman Cupxiv) a further telegram to the Mauretania for Dorothea from the captain of the US team, Elizabeth Ryan, reflecting genuine sporting camaraderie reading BON VOYAGE TO THE TEAM HOPE YOU ARE ALL AWFULLY SICK, CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN ON SPLENID WIN ESPECIALLY CAPTAIN, SHALL MISS YOU ALL TERRIBLY MUCH LOVE, ELIZABETH RYANxv) Original photograph of the team aboard the Mauretania wearing their tennis kit and posing with the Wightman Cup trophyxvi) a Wightman Cup congratulatory letter from a fellow tennis player from Eastbourne and clearly a close friend as it is addressed to "Dollie", also updating Mrs Lambert Chambers that she is suffering from an arm injury, almost certainly tennis elbow which Dorothea also suffered fromxvii) Letter from Wightman Cup team-mate Evelyn Colyer sent on first morning home from America 9th September 1925 and a thank you letter for Mrs L C's captaincy; and a portrait postcard of Evelyn Colyer; and press cuttings

Roy McLean South Africa cricket blazer 1951,by Carr Son & Wood Ltd, London, green wool with gold pinstripes, the neck label inscribed in ink Roy McLean, Springbok silkwork emblem to breast pocket inscribed S.A 1951, good condition; sold with a South African cricket neck tie (2)The South African cricketer Roy Alastair McLean (1930-2007) played in forty Tests from 1951 to 1964, the present blazer dating from the beginning of his international career when South Africa toured England. McLean was a stroke-playing and fast-scoring middle-order batsman who scored over 2,000 Test runs in 73 Test innings.

A very fine quality Austrian silver cigarette case with enamel decoration of a football match being a presentation to the England international Edgar Chadwick in 1900,the reverse inscribed PRESENTED TO MR EDGAR CHADWICK AS A MEMENTO OF FRIENDSHIP, GRATITUDE AND HIGH ESTEEM, FROM THE DEUTSCHER FUSSBALLCLUB, MAY 1900, PRAGUE, Austrian .900 silver mark, 8 by 6.5cm., in original fitted case for Emil Jager, PragueIn May 1900 Edgar Chadwick was a Burnley player, although he had played his last game and would join Southampton in August. In the prime of his career Chadwick played for Everton where he made 270 appearances from the inauguration of the Football League in 1888 and until 1899. During that time he won 7 England international caps.He was in Prague having accepted an invitation to coach some players during the English close season. After his playing days, Chadwick became a pioneering English coach in continental Europe which included a spell as the Dutch national manager during which time he coached the side to a bronze medal at the Stockholm 1912 Olympic Games.

A 1900-01 Football League Division One Championship medal awarded to Billy Dunlop of Liverpool FC,,in 15ct. gold & enamel, the obverse with the city crest of Liverpool and inscribed LIVERPOOL FOOTBALL CLUB, the reverse inscribed LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP, SEASON 1900-1901, W.DUNLOP, BACKThis was the first occasion in the history of club that Liverpool won the Football League Division One Championship title, with a total of 45 points two clear of Sunderland.The Scottish left-back Billy Dunlop played for Liverpool between 1894 and 1909 during which time he made a total of 357 appearances. He won a second Championship medal in 1906, and two Second Division Two medals in 1896 & 1905. Despite his success south of the border, Dunlop won just a single cap when in his 30s.After his playing career Billy Dunlop was offered a seat on the Mersey Docks Board.Provenance:Bought at Sotheby's, London, 14th July 2000 as lot 14.

A player's agreement between Cardiff City and George West dated 1st May 1920,for £8 per week, £5 during the close season, signed by West and by Club Secretary Fred StewartGeorge West was born at Wardley in the north-east and was spotted playing as a forward for the famous Wallsend Boys Club by Cardiff City manager Fred Stewart, the playing in the Southern League. West was the club's top scorer for two seasons up to the First World War. This contract dates from after the hostilities and for the forthcoming 1920-21 season when he eventually lost his first-team place to Harry Nash. West won a Welsh Cup winner's medal in 1920, scoring both goals in the 2-1 win over Wrexham.

A 1923 German National Football Championship winner's medal awarded to Otto Carlsson of Hamburger SV,in the form of a gilt-bronze rectangular plaquette, the obverse with a footballer in raised relief, the reverse inscribed DEM DEUTSCHEN FUSSBALL MEISTER, 1923, BERLIN, 10. JUNI 1923, 6 by 4cm.The first officially recognised German National Football Championship took place in 1903 and was won by VfB Leipzig. The 1922 Championship was shrouded in controversy and although Hamburg had originally been declared champions the competition is officially voided in the record books. Any disappointment for Hamburg was short-lived as they were officially crowned German National Champions for the first time in their history in 1923. Having beaten Guts Muts Dresden 2-0 in the quarter-final and VfB Konigsberg 3-2 in the semi-final Hamburger SV progressed to the final at the Deutsches Stadion, Berlin, on 10th June 1923. Here they easily beat Union Oberschoneweide 3-0 through goals by Otto Harder, Ludwig Breuel and Karl Schneider. Hamburg had an English coach A.W. Turner.Otto Carlsson was born in Sweden 16th December 1901. He started playing football at Limhamns IF before transferring to IFK Malmo in 1920. Carlsson went to live in Germany and continued his footballing career by joining Lubeck BV moving to Hamburger SV in 1922. He was part of the club's “phantom” win in the 1922 German Championship and the two officially crowned national titles in 1923 and 1928. In between Carlsson had returned to Sweden to do his military service there. Carlsson also played two international matches for Sweden. He was still playing for Hamburg until 1934 at which time he joined the LBV Phoenix in Lübeck.In 1942 Carlsson returned permanently to Sweden and gained work as a coach with appointments at IK Brage and IFK Malmö in the Allsvenskan. He died 1st March 1982.

Kenny Morgans's Manchester United player's blazer circa 1960,navy blue, Manchester United wirework club badge to breast pocket; sold with a letter of provenance supplied by the consignor (2)Kenneth Godfrey Morgans was born in Swansea 16th March 1939. He signed for Manchester United on leaving school in the summer of 1955 and played on the youth team's outside-right position, turning professional in 1956 albeit continuing to play for the youth team until the following year, and was captain of the Busby Babes F.A. Youth Cup winning team of 1957.Morgans made his first team debut on 21 December 1957, aged 18, against Leicester City in a league match at Old Trafford and was soon the club's first-choice outside-right, at the expense of the older and more experienced Johnny Berry.Miraculously he suffered only minor injuries in the Munich Air Disaster on 6 February 1958, when still only 18 years old, the youngest player involved in the crash and the last survivor to be rescued from the mangled wreckage of the BEA Elizabethan airliner after he was found unconscious amongst the debris by two journalists five hours after the official search was called off. He had played in the last match before the disaster, the European Cup quarter-final second leg against Red Star Belgrade, and had so far made 10 senior career appearances for United.Although he made a full physical recovery following the crash and was back in the side before the end of the season, playing in further nine games, he appeared to be a shadow of his former self on the pitch and made just four appearances for the first team over the next three seasons.He then returned to Wales and had spells with Swansea Town, Newport County & Barry Town before becoming player/manager at non-League Cwmbran Town in 1968.After football he was a pub landlord and finished his working days as a ship's chandler, although he made various media contributions in the final years of his life Ken Morgans died in Swansea 18 November 2012.

The red Liverpool No.28 jersey worn by Steven Gerrard on his first full competitive start for the club in the UEFA Cup 3rd Round 2nd Leg tie v Celta Vigo played at Anfield 8th December 1998,long-sleeved, the reverse lettered GERRARD; sold with two supporting provenance documents which feature this shirt, a Wirral Echo newspaper and an edition of The Koppite magazine (3) Steven Gerrard was born in Whiston, Merseyside, 30th May 1980. He was playing for hometown team Whiston Juniors when he was noticed by Liverpool scouts and joined the Liverpool Academy aged 9. Gerrard signed his first professional contract with Liverpool on 5 November 1997 and made his first-team debut as a last minute substitute in the Premier League game v Blackburn Rovers at Anfield 19th November 1998. The present jersey represents Gerrard's first full start for Liverpool FC where for the record Celta Vigo beat Liverpool 1-0. And so began the career of a player who would be an all-time club legend playing in over 500 Premier League games and afforded winner's medals for the Champions League, UEFA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, F.A. Cup, three Football League Cups and a F.A. Community Shield.After the match with Celta Vigo Gerrard swapped shirts with opponent Goran Djorovic who in turn gifted it to a friend in Serbia. It was later acquired by a Liverpool supporter, the present consignor.
