Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Fox Squirrel and Live Oak" Signed lower center. Original Watercolor on Paper laid on Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This art was originally published in the limited edition collection of philatelic proofcards issued by Fleetwood and the National Audubon Society for the Wildlife of the 50 States. Scrambling, twisting and finally falling on all fours, the Fox Squirrel cavorts in the massive branches of Georgia's strong state tree, the Live Oak. As the largest North American squirrel, this black ball of fur is clumsy. However, as if to atone for his awkwardness, the Fox Squirrel is friendly and much more charming than his graceful relatives. These friendly fellows entertain people by playing with pine cones and paper balls, turning somersaults in grassy meadows, holding climbing drills on tree branches and chasing each other through Georgia's magnificent oak groves. These humorous activities are accompanied by loud scoldings, noisy whistling and the rapid chatter through which Fox Squirrels communicate with each other. Like their smaller relatives, the Georgia squirrels instinctively twitch their bushy tails. Noting this nervous habit as a characteristic of the squirrel species, the Greeks named these friendly rodents squirrel, which means shadow tail. During the midwinter mating season the twitching tail is especially evident as the males busily preen and fluff. When finished, they curl their bushy, well-groomed tails over their smooth backs and begin to court the female Fox Squirrels. About forty-five days later, two to four young are born, each weighing only two-thirds of an ounce. In just ten weeks, the once tiny babies crack their own nuts, scold their friends and, like their parents, sleep away much of the lazy morning until the afternoon sun warms their sleek, black coats.Image Size: 12 x 13.75 in. Overall Size: 20.25 x 23 in. Unframed. (B05762)

A LARGE PUCE-GROUND 'SLEEPING TEACHER & MISCHIEVOUS BOYS' VASE, LATE QING TO REPUBLIC PERIODChina, 1850-1949. The baluster sides rising from a thick tall foot to a waisted neck with flared rim. The exterior is finely painted in bright enamels against a puce ground with a charming and humorous scene of an elderly scholar who has fallen asleep at his desk and the chaos ensuing around him. One boy is standing behind the scholar on his chair, removing his hat, while another holds up a rod with a small spider attached to it in an effort to frighten the poor teacher once he awakes. The base and interior glazed turquoise.Inscriptions: To one side, 'The children bring happiness and joy. They laugh and sing and celebrate the new year.'Provenance: Lyon & Turnbull, Edinburgh, United Kingdom, 8 January 2005, lot 109 (invoice not available, old label to interior). A Scottish private collection, acquired from the above, and thence by descent.Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and minimal firing irregularities only. Must be considered extremely rare in this splendid state of preservation.Weight: c. 7.2 kg Dimensions: Height 45 cmFurther boys are seen idling about or playing games, while one particularly studious child sits at a desk much like his master's, holding a brush and showing a pensive expression, and another is leafing through a book from a pile on a stand in front of him. The back with a poetic inscription. The recessed base with an apocryphal iron-red gilt-ground four-character mark Qianlong nianzhi.Expert's note: Most porcelain vases painted with the 'boys' motif use this subject to reference a certain festivity, such as the New Year or the Dragon Boat Festival. The present lot, however, lacks any such allusions and instead offers a humorous and very lifelike scene of children running amok in the absence of an attentive guardian, and is thus much rarer than comparable examples.

A PALE CELADON FIGURE OF A BOY WITH A HOBBY HORSE, 18TH CENTURYChina. Carved as a striding boy holding the reins of the hobby horse with one hand, the other holding a leafy lotus stem. The translucent stone of a pale celadon color with faint russet patches and veins, and cloudy white inclusions.Provenance: From the collection of the late Michael Sherrard CBE, QC, acquired before 2000 and thence by descent. Michael Sherrard (1928-2012) was an English barrister in fraud and company law who was considered one of the great recent influences on the legal profession. He was involved in numerous high-profile cases in both English and East Asian courts, particularly Hong Kong and Singapore. Together with Linda Goldman, he wrote a memoir titled “Wigs and Wherefores: A Biography of Michael Sherrard QC”. Sherrard was an enthusiastic collector of Chinese art, especially jade carvings.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, minuscule nibbling to the base, the lotus flower with a small chip. The stone with natural imperfections and fissures, some of which may have developed into small hairline cracks over time.Weight: 74.0 g Dimensions: Height 65 cmExquisitely modeled in the round to depict a boy astride a hobby horse, the reins of which he lovingly clutches whilst slinging stems of lotus over his shoulder, this carving captures the playful ease and charm of the subject. Images of boys playing with a hobby horse form part of the popular 'boys at play' and 'Hundred Boys' subjects that emerged during the Song dynasty. This theme is symbolic of the Confucian ideal for the education and advancement of many sons, a wish further emphasized by the lotus he carries which is a homophone of 'continuous' and creates the rebus 'May you continuously give birth to sons'. As the boy is depicted riding a hobby horse, this conveys the further wish for it to come quickly as 'to be on top of a horse' means 'immediately'.Literature comparison:Compare a related carved jade figure of a boy, but holding a rattle instead of a lotus stem, in the collection of the Museum of East Asian Art, Bath, collection number BATEA 1218. Compare also a related jade figure of a boy holding a lantern on a pole, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 2015.500.5.14.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Sotheby's Hong Kong, 30 November 2016, lot 158Price: HKD 525,500 or approx. A FAMILLE ROSE 'IN THE ARBOR' DISH BY CORNELIUS PRONK, CHINA, 1735-1740 The shallow dish decorated after the Dutch artist Cornelius Pronk's design with the classic topiary garden scene painted in bright enamels, the center depicting a seated figure flanked by his attendant and surrounded by four young boys playing, a pond with ducks and reeds, encircled by a border with cartouches of moths, butterflies, auspicious flowers and fruit, the reverse with an iron-red, stylized lambrequin band with lappets of alternating size, the larger lappets suspending purple enameled pendant tassels.Provenance: From the collection of William Martin Hurst. Philip Suval Inc., New York, 1991. Richard and Maxine Markell, acquired from the above. A copy of the original invoice from Philip Suval Inc., New York, dated 24 September 1991, describing the piece as a porcelain plate decorated with a design by Cornelius Pronk, known as 'in the arbor', dating the piece to circa 1735-1740, and stating a purchase price of USD 5,800 or approx. EUR 12,000 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies this lot. Two old labels to the base 'W. Martin Hurst Collection' and '195', and one remnant of an old label. William Martin-Hurst (1876-1941) was the Managing Editor of the Exclusive News Agency. He wrote articles on Yongzheng and Qianlong porcelain, most notably collaborating with George Williamson on The Book of Famille Rose. He was also said to have the largest collection of famille rose eggshell wares, and the aim of his collection was described to be 'in the direction of the finest cabinet pieces'. Philip Suval Inc. was an art gallery, operating from at least 1879 in Southampton, New York, with an additional two locations listed in Manhattan by 1930. They are still in business today, specializing in antique ceramics. Condition: Very good condition with some wear, most of the enamels still very crisp and well-preserved. Few small chips to back of rim, not visible on the front. Manufacturing flaws including pitting, glaze recesses, firing cracks, dark spots, and light warping.Weight: 524 g Dimensions: Diameter 26.1 cmBecause of its strong Western composition and coloring, the 'in the arbor' motif has been attributed to Cornelius Pronk even though no specific drawings have survived. However, there exists a watercolor by Pronk of a tea pavilion in a Haarlem park, dating from around 1730, and it is possible that the artist adapted this earlier effort for the porcelain. The Dutch draughtsman, Cornelis Pronk (1691-1754), was commissioned by directors of the Dutch East India Company in 1734 to produce designs to be transferred on to Chinese porcelain which they hoped would be more successful than Chinese designs. However, due to the expense of transferring his designs onto porcelain, the volume of Pronk's work is relatively small, and his designs ceased in 1738. 'In the arbor' is supposedly Pronk's fourth and last certain design for the Dutch East India Company and was drawn in 1737. For an informative discussion of the use of documented patterns by Pronk, see William R. Sargent, Treasures of Chinese Export Ceramics from the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, 2012, pp. 275-293, nos. 146 and 147.Literature comparison: Compare a closely related Pronk 'arbor' dish, 26.3 cm diameter, dated ca. 1735-1740, in the Victoria and Albert Museum, accession number CIRC.452-1931.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's Amsterdam, 3 October 2012, lot 358Price: EUR 5,000 or approx. Martin Hurst Collection' 與 '195',還有一個標籤殘片。
