A rare set of original WWII Second World War Belgian playing cards, made by Peacock. Circa late 1930's, the cards original paper wrapping is stamped with an official German mark ' Stalag Luft III, Sagen .' Interestingly, of the 28 cards present, 27 are the same card (Jack of clubs). It is believed that the Germans, fearful of secret codes being written on the playing cards, would deliberately only give out sets with the same cards as to easily detect when a card had been altered. Every set of playing cards from Stalag Luft III comes in a similar form. Stalag Luft III was famous for ' The Great Escape ,' in which playing cards were used to conceal maps and other secret documents for escapee prisoners of war. An interesting piece of history.
