Ethelbert White was born in Isleworth, Middlesex. In 1911, he studied at St. John`s Wood Art School under Leonard Walker and, in the same year, married Elizabeth Crofton Dodwell, always known as `Betty`. The couple shared a liking for a simple and unconventional way of life, full of fun, friendship, music and travel. They lived in an 18th century cottage in Hampstead Grove, Camden, and travelled around the countryside in their gypsy caravan, `Reading`, Ethelbert producing paintings of village life and Betty playing the lute. White exhibited at London Group and New English Art Club from 1916. His first one-man-show was at Paterson and Carfax Gallery in 1921. He was a regular exhibitor at the RA and RWS. A memorial exhibition was held at the Fine Art Society in 1979. His work is represented in may public collections. "We spent two hours at the Great Exhibition. It is much more beautiful than I had fancied. The first glance as we went in at the south entrance was of a scene so perfectly new and strange - you enter a great space - the intersection of the transept & nave as they rather strangely call it - there are statues standing about, and groups of people amongst them - orientals in red Fez caps. . In front of you is the great glass fountain playing; it looks like a part of Kubla Khan`s palace - beyond two palm trees and the great English Elm overshadowing them, and revealing the immense height of the roof that covers it..

* Le Brussel, act. early 19th century- "Aloys Senefelder"; lithograph, after Jabard, full sheet with margins, on cream wove, 31x24cm, (unframed) Note: Senefelder the inventor of lithography; Problems with the printing of his play Mathilde von Altenstein caused him to fall into debt, and unable to afford to publish his new play, playing with an etching technique using a greasy, acid resistant ink as a resist on a smooth fine-grained stone of Solnhofen Limestone. He then discovered that this could be extended to allow printing from the flat surface of the stone alone, the first Planogrphic process in printing. He joined with the André family of music publishers and gradually perfected his technique into a workable state. He called it "stone printing" or "chemical printing", but the French name "lithography" has stuck.
