A rare Napoleonic prisoner of war work box, for playing cards or similar parlour games, of wood with faded mauve paper lining, the interior divided into 4 small and single large central compartments, the exterior entirely covered with carved and finely fretted bone panels with roped edges, the central panel depicting a scene of a gentleman hunter with his lady, mounted on horseback hunting a stag with dogs, all on a backing of gilt foil. Generally GC (some damage, particularly to the central panel, originally with 4 small feet, now removed, gilt foil dull). This is similar to several other known examples that it is likely that they were all produced by the same hand. Accompanying the lot are two antiques magazines and a photo copy from "Scrimshaw & Scrimshanders", all showing very similar boxes. (Please see lot 503 for image)

Rafael Canogar, b.1935, LOS PRISIONEROS II, signed and dated 71; signed, titled and dated 1971 on the reverse, oil, wood and epoxy on panel, 100x136.5x17cm.; 39.5x53.75x10.5in. Like the previous lot, Los Prisioneros II is rooted in the ideology of the artistic revolt, 'El Paso', formed in Madrid in 1957 by Canogar and his contemporaries, to rebel against Spain's cultural isolation from the rest of Europe. The communal protest of the foreground figures with their focused stance and synchronised motion, stands as a symbol of the artistic revolution felt so strongly by Canogar, Saura, Millares (see lot 307), Feito and others. 'El Paso' sought to overcome the acute crisis in the visual arts in Spain; the lack of museums and collectors, as well as the absence of responsible criticism and representation. By negating colour and playing upon black and white chromatic contrast, the figures remain anonymous yet united, empowered through their bond in the struggle for free expression and official recognition. The protruding arm of the most foreground figure serves not to break the protesting rhythmic motion, but rather to reinforce its reality, persuading the viewer to literally confront the spirit of this revolutionary vision of a 'new reality'. à
