Whether Brauers’ assertion is correct, the imposing scale of the musical box, its deluxe case, the crest and the delineation of date and location suggest an instrument produced for presentation or exhibition purposes. Das Unternehmen wurde 1879 aufgelöst. Im folgenden Jahr meldeten Rudolph und seine Frau Elise ein neues Unternehmen an unter dem Namen "Karrer-Hoffmann, Elise", mit Rudolph als Bevollmächtigtem. Snelling spekuliert: "Es scheint (...) ein gewisser Schwindel vorgelegen zu haben, als Rudolph die Karrer & (Cie) unter dem Vorwand auflöste, Elise sei die Erfinderin des (Aufzieh-)Mechanismus, den sie am 7. August 1880 in England patentieren ließ." - Der patentierte Aufzugsmechanismus erforderte die umgekehrte Montage des hier gezeigten Werks mit dem Kamm auf der Rückseite und dem Zylinder auf der Vorderseite, um dem Ratschenhebel genügend Spielraum zu geben, ohne gegen die Gehäusewand zu stoßen (die rechte Gehäuseteilung wurde entfernt, um den Aufzugsmechanismus auf dem Katalogphoto zu zeigen). - Ein sehr ungewöhnliches Werk, das eine Überholung wert ist. The company was dissolved in 1879. The following year, Rudolph and his wife Elise registered a new business under the name "Karrer-Hoffmann, Elise", with Rudolph as power of attorney. Snelling speculates: "There appears (…) to have been some deviousness when Rudolph dissolved Karrer & (Cie) based on the pretense that Elise was the inventor of the (winding) mechanism which she proceeded to patent in England on August 7th 1880." - The patented winding mechanism necessitated the inverted mounting of the movement seen here, with the comb at the back and the cylinder at the front, in order to allow the ratchet-lever sufficient travel without colliding against the case wall. (51 cm) including headdress, with acorn-form stop / start and modern key, surface of face restored, good working and playing condition. - Note: Part of a series of Vichy automata reminiscent of the polychrome-painted bronze busts by French artists such as Émile Guillemin and Charles Cordier. The impression of an animated sculpture is heightened by the graceful modelling of the face and hands and the slender plinth base in imitation of its bronze counterparts. From the choice of subject, to the style of costume and the instrument she plays, the automaton was influenced by a 19th century fascination with 'exoticism' that reflected African cultures through a European lens. - The musician turns and gently bows her head to the left and right, blinks and appears to play the instrument with a lifting and plucking motion of the right arm. - This example has been sympathetically restored by David Secrett and Margaret Glover. - Literature: Q. Der Kopf der Figur ist aus Gips gefertigt und mit farbigen Kreisen verziert, Augen, Nase und rechter Fuß sind beweglich, der Motor mit sechs Nocken und einem Walzenspielwerk befinden sich im Faß. - Die Mechanik bringt Claude dazu, sich zu drehen und mit dem Kopf zu nicken, beide Hände zu bewegen und mit dem Fuß zu klopfen, während seine Augen von links nach rechts huschen und seine Nase sich im Takt der Musik ein- und auswärts bewegt. - Bekleidet mit einer karierten Seidenhose und einem magentafarbenen Satinfrack mit Spitzenbesatz, Höhe 66 cm, guter Zustand, Walzenspielwerk ein früher Ersatz, Bodenplatte des Fasses ersetzt, Kurbel mit Griff aus Bein, mit eichelförmigem Stopp/Start-Knopf von Vichy. - Literatur: Für ähnliche Stücke, siehe: Christian und Sharon Bailly, "Automates Anciens", Ausstellung im Hospice Saint-Charles, 25. Frederick John Perry (18 May 1909 - 2 February 1995) was a British tennis and table tennis player and former world No. 1 from England who won 10 Majors including eight Grand Slam tournaments and two Pro Slams single titles, as well as six Major doubles titles. Perry won three consecutive Wimbledon Championships from 1934 to 1936 and was World Amateur number one tennis player during those three years. Prior to Andy Murray in 2013, Perry was the last British player to win the men's Wimbledon championship, in 1936, and the last British player to win a men's singles Grand Slam title, until Andy Murray won the 2012 US Open. Perry was the first player to win a Career Grand Slam , winning all four singles titles, which he completed at the age of 26 at the 1935 French Championships. He remains the only British player ever to achieve this. Perry's first love was table tennis and he was World Champion in 1929.
