Later, he joined the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities in Stockholm, first as a curator and then between 1981-1998 as the director of the museum. Further, he published numerous articles during his work as the editor of the Bulletin of the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities. One of his most famous works is the book "Chinese Art history" (1972), which is still one of the most read books for students of Chinese art history in Sweden. Condition: Good condition. Later, he became the principal of the Chinese Opera School and trained many talented actors, for example, Mei Lanfang, Cheng Yanqiu, Xun Huisheng, and Shang Xiaoyun. A LARGE SANDSTONE HEAD OF A MALE DEITY, BAPHUON STYLE, ANGKOR PERIODKhmer Empire, 11th century. Well carved with almond-shaped eyes, a ridged brow, broad nose, full lips, and long pendulous earlobes, the chin with a subtle cleft. His finely carved hair pulled up into a chignon and secured with a band sculpted with lotus petals, the topknot surmounted by a lotus finial.Provenance: Collection of Lucia Muzio, Milan, Italy. A private collector in Milan, Italy, acquired from the above. Collection of Leonardo Vigorelli, Bergamo, acquired from the above. Lucia Muzio was the daughter of the Italian architect Giovanni Muzio (1893-1982), who was closely associated with the Novecento Italiano artists group. A notable project by Muzio was the design of the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth, completely rebuilt between 1960 and 1969.Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive weathering, some wear, several losses, minor fissure, dents and a fine natural patina overall. Dimensions: Height 46 cm (excl. stand) and 55.5 cm (incl. stand)Mounted on a modern stand. A BRONZE ARROW VASE, TOUHU, XUANDE MARK AND PROBABLY OF THE PERIODChina, 15th-17th century. Heavily cast, the compressed globular body supported on a waisted foot with a stepped and galleried foot rim and rising to a tall cylindrical neck, flanked by lug handles with galleried rims repeated on the neck. Finely decorated with archaistic taotie to the body, divided by curved flanges and enclosed by leiwen bands, and to the upper neck, as well as a band of ruyi-heads to the shoulder, a neatly incised wood grain design to the lower neck and pendent palm blades with leiwen to the central neck.Provenance: Collection particuliere française.Condition: Very good condition with old wear and some casting irregularities, minuscule nicks, occasional light scratches, minor dents. Fine, naturally grown, dark patina.Weight: 3,753 gDimensions: Height 29.2 cmThe recessed base incised with a four-character mark Xuande nianzhi within a square and probably of the period.The form of this vase is inspired by archaic bronze vessels used for touhu (lit. 'pitch-pot'), a traditional East Asian game that requires players to throw arrows or sticks from a set distance into a large, sometimes ornate, vessel. The game had originated by the Warring States period, probably invented by archers or soldiers as a pastime during idle periods. It began as a game of skill or a drinking game at parties, but by the time it was described in a chapter of the Chinese Classic Book of Rites, it had acquired Confucian moral overtones. Initially popular among elites, it spread to other classes and remained popular in China until the end of the Qing Dynasty. Touhu was usually a contest between players, who had to throw arrows into the mouth or tubular handles of the vase, which was placed at an equal distance between two mats on which the players knelt. Touhu vases continued to be produced in the Song dynasty and later, made in various materials including bronze, cloisonne, and ceramic.Expert's note: The present touhu vase differs from other examples, commonly dated to the 16th and later centuries, in its elaborate incision work and distinctive mask decoration. Furthermore, the Xuande Emperor was known to be quite fond of the game, as evidenced by a painting of him playing touhu by Shan Xi (in the Palace Museum, Beijing). The two standing attendants wearing princely attire, the larger bearded figure holding a mirror and wearing a turban, the figure beside him with the right hand raised in abhaya mudra, his left holding a lotus. Two cross-legged musicians are seated at the attendants' feet, playing a harp and vina respectively, each with a smiling expression, the harp player wearing a turban. Flemish or Prague school; early 17th century."Apollo and Marsias".Oil on canvas. Relined.It has an export permit issued on 13 March 2020.Provenance: Marques de Larios.It has informative labels on the back: about the provenance and of the delegated board of seizure.Measurements: 151 x 189 cm; 164 x 202 cm (frame).This piece depicts a mythological theme known as the challenge between Apollo and Marsias or the verdict of Midas. According to the myth Marsias obtained a flute, when Athena discarded it. Interested in the instrument, the faun specialised in such a way that he was acclaimed for his great virtuosity. This fame brought him into conflict with Apollo, who was considered the god of the arts. For this reason both characters competed; Marsias playing the flute and Apollo the lyre. The judges were the court of both; the satyrs and the nymphs. It is said that despite the great skill of Marsias, Apollo played his instrument upside down and backwards generating harmony in both cases, as Marsias could not achieve this result with the flute he lost to Apollo. In this particular piece, the protagonists of the scene are displaced to the right of the composition: the figure of Apollo is more centralised, naked and dressed in a red cloak, holding a violin in his hands. This instrument is a licence by the artist, as in the original myth Apollo played the lyre, but the artist has respected the idea of the stringed instrument. In the centre, Midas, crowned, gazes at Apollo, as does Marsias, who is wearing a crown and golden mantle. With his back to the viewer, he does not seem to be holding his flute but observing and respecting Apollo's moment of prominence. The scene is accompanied by an entourage of fauns supporting Marsias, and various elegantly dressed ladies representing the muses. A remarkable fact about the scene is that although the main protagonists are in costumes inspired by antiquity, the muses are dressed in the fashion of the time. This characteristic was common during the period, as many court ladies assimilated the classicist aesthetic, creating a symbiosis between antiquity and their own time.Formally, this work is dominated by the influence of the Flemish school. Thus, the figures are monumental, with idealised faces and serene, balanced gestures, in an idealised representation based on classical canons. The rhetoric of the gestures, theatrical and eloquent, clearly Baroque, is also typical of 17th-century classicism. The importance of the chromatic aspect should also be noted, which is very well thought out, intoned and balanced.

Wade set of Robertson's Jam Golly band figures (5): These items are listed on the basis they are illustrative of by a gone culture in which there were different social norms. We understand the potential controversy surrounding this type of item but believe that providing transparent information about historical context fosters greater understanding of our complex cultural history. Originally handmade by mothers in Africa for their children from old fabric and cloth, the golly doll was adopted as the mascot and trademark for the Robertson's confectionery brand around 1910 after the company's founder John Robertson visited the US and noticed children playing with them. Robertson's Gollies have been collected by people across the UK and around the world for generations but garnered a contentious image in the 1980s because of links to racism. The trademark was removed from Robertson's branding in 2001.

For many years they shared a large property in Chiswick with a studio, until making the move to Cornwall.Maggie bought their magical house in North Cornwall from the Carlyon Family in 1978. After renovating their home, they settled happily into retirement, Maggie astutely playing the stock market and June continuing to create sculpture. June died in 2002 and Maggie followed her last year.The home they left, and their wonderful collection of art and antiques, stand as a celebration and testament to their happy life together.Condition report: There are no condition issues.

She trained at Chelsea School of Art and exhibited widely during the 1960s & 70s. Her work featured in group shows in prestigious galleries and locations like the Royal Academy alongside artists such as Denis Mitchell, John Milne & Kim Lim. June was the daughter of Lancelot Barrington-Ward KCVO, a royal surgeon to King George VI and his family. He also played rugby for England. Her grandfather was the vicar of Duloe in Cornwall. Although her work was applauded by contemporary critics, she never pursued recognition. In the words of a family member “she didn’t seek fame and I believe she was simply happy to be left alone to make things.”We have over 30 pieces of June’s impressive sculpture in our March 10/11th sale.Maggie Cameron Fraser was an academic who specialised in antique glass, a subject on which she wrote extensively and lectured at the Victoria & Albert Museum.
