The Hester Piozzi - Sophy Thrale Correspondence, a remarkable and apparently unknown series of letters from Hester Lynch Piozzi (1741-1821, writer) to Sophia Thrale/Hoare (1771-1824, her seventh child and sixth daughter), described by Samuel Johnson as 'dear, sweet, pretty, lovely, delicious Miss Sophy', unbound in a tan calf album bearing the bookplate of Henry Merrik Hoare (1770-1826), gilt tooled with MSS Letters to spine, husband of Sophia/Other letters of Hester Piozzi have been published, notably those to her eldest daughter Hester Maria in The Queeney Letters, ed. The Marquess of Lansdowne, London 1934, which comprises fifty letters. The present group, to the younger sister, only a little shorter, are of later date and form a significant complement to the known and published correspondence of one of the most significant literary figures of her age, who was, moreover, the most important friend and correspondent of Samuel Johnson/A correspondence of considerable literary and historical significance, dating from the latter part of Hester Piozzi's life, following the death of her husband, the brewer, Henry Thrale (1728-1781) and her marriage three years later to the musician Gabriel Mario Piozzi (1740-1809), a connection which led to her estrangement from Dr Johnson and many of her family. Comprising thirty letters to her youngest daughter in the period 1805 to 1821. The letters are generally of considerable length, often continuing onto the address-leaf, and invariably signed with initials, displaying great affection, a vast amount of biographically significant information and society gossip, and including a considerable amount of original verse./The correspondence appears to have been neglected among the papers of the Hoare family and to have remained unknown and unpublished./Together with various other letters, mostly to Sophia, from Sarah Siddons (1 page undated, complaining that she must 'embrace the dreadful fatigue of playing every night'); S[arah] M[artha] Siddons, 5 September 1788, mentioning Cecilia's safe delivery and Maria's bad health; Maria Siddons, announcing a visit from her mother; Arthur Murphy; two letters from John Warner to Hugh Hoare (banker); copy of Samuel Johnson's letter to Hester Thrale on the death of her husband [Henry]; Eleanor Butler (one of the 'Ladies of Llangollen') to Sophia, 1808, and a few others. Johannes Vermeer (1632 – 1675) was a Dutch painter from the Golden Age of Dutch art, known for his exquisite and meticulously crafted genre scenes, portraits, and domestic interiors. Despite producing a relatively small number of works, Vermeer is celebrated for his masterful use of light, color, and composition, which have earned him a place as one of the most revered painters in art history.Key aspects of Johannes Vermeer's life and work include:1. **Genre Painting:** Vermeer is best known for his genre paintings that capture everyday scenes of domestic life. His subjects often include women engaged in various activities within interiors, such as reading, writing, playing musical instruments, and engaging in contemplative moments.2. **Light and Atmosphere:** Vermeer's use of light is one of his defining features. He employed a meticulous technique of layering thin glazes of paint to create a luminous quality that bathes his scenes in a soft, diffused light. His skill in capturing the interplay of light, shadow, and reflections is a hallmark of his work.3. **Camera Obscura Theory:** Some art historians suggest that Vermeer may have used a camera obscura, an optical device, to achieve the precision and accuracy of his compositions. This theory explains the photographic realism and clarity seen in his paintings.4. **Limited Output:** Vermeer produced a relatively small number of paintings, estimated to be around 34 to 37 works. This limited output adds to the allure and mystique surrounding his art.5. **Vermeer's Themes:** Vermeer's paintings often depict women in domestic settings, reflecting themes of intimacy, introspection, and quiet beauty. He also painted portraits and a few outdoor scenes.6. **Delft:** Vermeer spent most of his life in the city of Delft, Netherlands. While he did not achieve great fame during his lifetime, he was respected within his local community and produced works for local patrons.7. **Rediscovery:** Vermeer's work was largely forgotten after his death, and it wasn't until the 19th century that his paintings were rediscovered and reevaluated. The 19th-century art critic Théophile Thoré-Bürger played a significant role in rekindling interest in Vermeer's art.8. **Legacy:** Johannes Vermeer's art has left an indelible impact on the history of painting. His mastery of composition, light, and atmosphere continues to captivate viewers and inspire artists to this day.Johannes Vermeer's ability to capture the nuances of everyday life, his mastery of light and color, and his dedication to creating precise and intimate scenes have solidified his reputation as a master painter of the Dutch Golden Age. His works remain beloved and are celebrated for their timeless beauty and artistic excellence.Measures 26 x 30. .
