Introducing Falstaff.- Shakespeare (William) The First Part of Henry the Fourth, with the Life and Death of Henry, Sirnamed Hot-Spurre, extract from the first folio, the full play, comprising pp.46, 49-73 with last page of Richard II and first page of Henry IV part 2, a few leaves shaved to just touch printed ruled border, but generally a clean and crisp copy, modern calf, gilt, by Bernard Middleton, folio (303 x 197mm.), [Printed by Isaac Jaggard, and Ed. Blount], 1623.*** A generally fine copy and handsomely bound of the first appearance of one of the great Shakespearean characters - Sir John Falstaff. In a recent article in The Times, Sir Ian McKellen described playing Falstaff, one of his five favourite characters, thus: "I’ve always found Falstaff a difficult character to relate to, but I’m beginning to understand his appeal. What is it about spending an evening with a man so objectionable, yet it ends up grabbing your heart? I think in these days of Gaza and Kyiv, when a soldier on the battlefield flings his arms wide and says, “Give me life!”, that’s why we like Falstaff. He’s on the side of life, with all its mysteries and difficulties and disappointments."

Various sizes, from c.115 x 85mm to 178 x 230mm, six in pencil, one in watercolour, 11 in pen and ink, including a series of six studies of judges, barristers and court scenes, a watercolour inscribed on the verso in a later hand "Children looking into a Cake Shop Window for 'Denis Duval' by W. Thackeray", a humorous sketch entitled "Gulliver and the Lilliputians at Blind Man’s Bluff" showing Thackeray playing with a group of children, and a page of doodles comprising studies of heads and monograms (this last mounted with an envelope in a folder with slip-case; sent to George Smith). [With:] George Cruikshank (1792-1878). Five etchings, on India paper and mounted on card, illustrating the story "Hop o’ my Thumb & the Seven League Boots", the first illustration with autograph inscription on mount "W. M. Thackeray Esq., with the regards of George Cruikshank, 1853". Relics from the stillborn artistic career of William Makepeace Thackeray, preserved at least in part by the publisher George Smith; with etchings presented to Thackeray by Cruikshank. On his return to England from Germany in 1831, Thackeray took up the study of law at the Middle Temple. He applied himself rather half-heartedly for almost a year, spending more time developing his passions for the theatre and for reading fiction and history. Losing any real ambition for the law, and without entrée to the circles of society which his expected fortune and his public school education led him to expect, he spent the year of his maturity in a variety of "ungentlemanly" pursuits, working as a bill discounter, desultory journalist, and artist. In September 1834 he moved to Paris, for what was supposed to be a three-year apprenticeship in the ateliers of a French artist, applying himself happily and seriously to his studies only to discover, within a year, that his talent for comic drawings would never develop into satisfactory art. He did, however, continue to work closely with illustrators throughout his career, from George Cruikshank and John Leech (a friend from boarding school) to Richard Doyle and Frederick Walker. Provenance: George Smith (1824-1901, publisher) [part]; Christie’s, London, 29 May 1986, lot 244.

The General Service Medal awarded to Driver D. N. Henderson, 55 Air Despatch, Royal Army Service Corps, later Royal Corps of Transport General Service 1962-2007, 3 clasps, Borneo, South Arabia, Northern Ireland (T/23886787 Dvr. D. N. Henderson. RASC.) edge nicks and light contact marks, very fine, scarce to unit £100-£140 --- David Nigel Anthony Hefferman was born in Hendon, London in 1945. Attesting for the Royal Army Service Corps, he served in Borneo as part of the Airborne 55 Company Air Despatch. During 1964 the Indonesian ‘Confrontation’ seemed to bring yet more work for the despatchers. On some occasions aircraft returned from having dropped supplies to their bases in Borneo with bullet holes from small arms fire on the aircraft. Additionally despatchers found themselves building sandbag shelters and learning to operate Oerlikon Guns for airfield defence. At the start of November 1964 his Company was ordered to stand by four despatch crews for an undisclosed task. Two days later twenty-six NCOs and men flew over Indonesian bases and two and half million leaflets were despatched which bore a message from a surrendered Indonesian officer. The Malaysian Prime Minister, Tanglm Abdul Rahman, described the operation as ‘a great success’. Whilst out there the Royal Army Service became the Royal Corp of Transport in 1965, his unit being re-titled 55 Air Despatch Squadron. This included the taking over of the Heavy Drops carried out by the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. He was part of the Squadron’s football team and by 1975 he was playing for the R.C.T. Team. The Restricted December 1975 Post Tour Report of the 55 Squadron in Northern Ireland looked at improvements in equipment and how further training could help the Troop with security such as driving duties and operations in the infantry role such as weekly patrolling. At the time they were based in Antrim and the placing of single Troops seemed to be more efficient and effective than placing the whole Squadron. Hefferman later lived in Haringey in London, High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire, and Truro in Cornwall.
