Camels symbolised the prosperity of the Silk Route- the trade routes between China, Europe, and the Middle East- as they were the main form of transportation in the caravans. A popular theme for Tang court painters and sculptors was that of foreign ambassadors submitting tribute to the emperor. Diplomatic missions and the concomitant opulent offerings were an important medium of international exchange. In the dynasty’s first decades, the Tang expanded control north and east to Goguryeo and Baekje in Manchuria and the Korean peninsula, north to the steppes of Mongolia, west to the deserts and oases of Central Asia, and south to parts of the present-day provinces of Guangxi, Yunnan, and northern Vietnam. These and other kingdoms sent staples and exotica: lions from Persia and rhinoceroses from the kingdom of Champa in south and central Vietnam, hawks from the Korean peninsula, ostriches sent by Western Turks, sandalwood from the Indonesian archipelago, cardamom from the coast of the Malay peninsula, indigo from Samarkand, and wool from Tibet. Even entertainers such as musicians, dancers, and performers, as depicted on this piece, were presented as gifts. As is evident in tomb paintings and figurines, international trade whetted a taste for striking and sumptuous fashions among the Tang elite. Leopard-skin hats and close-fitting sleeves, imitating the clothing of Central Asians and Persians to the west, were popular in the mid-8th century. High boots, practical for riding, were worn by both men and women, as were short tunics. [A video of this lot is available to view on Timeline Auctions Website.]

STEVE FORD | WALES JERSEY 1990 Traditional Wales International unusued sub jersey No.16. by Umbro. Believed to have been worn by Steve Ford when an unused substitute versus Wales in their match against England at Twickenham, in the Five Nations Championship, Wales suffered a heavy loss (34-6) after which Wales coach John Ryan resigned. Stephen Paul “Steve” Ford was born in Cardiff in August 1965 and played as a schoolboy for Rumney High School. In 1983 he joined Rumney but a year later played two rugby league trial matches for Leeds (brother Phil was already playing Rugby League for Warrington). Although he never played for Leeds the Welsh Rugby Union deemed that attending the trials had been an act of professionalism and suspended Ford from playing rugby union. After two years Ford’s suspension was lifted and he was allowed to play union again, joining Cardiff and appearing eight times for Wales.

NORMAN GALE | WALES A match-worn Wales International rugby union jersey worn by former captain, Norman Gale (1939-2005), bears embroidered Prince of Wales feathers and no. 2 on reverse, label for Umbro to collar, this label believed to relate to the period (1965-1971) and no. 2 will date to 1967 onwards, relates to a match between 1967 and 1969, together with an official England v Wales Twickenham 28 January 1968 match programme and a match dinner invitation at the London Hilton Hotel, Park Lane (2) Provenance: purchased at our auction house in 2020 as part of a collection of jerseys consigned by Norman Gale's family Norman Reginald Gale (1939-2005) was a former Wales hooker and captain. He was a Gorseinon boy, educated at Gowerton Grammar School and, after playing for Gorseinon seniors, joined Llanelli, whom he led in the 1964/65 and 1967/68 seasons, despite a brief spell with Swansea. In March 1960 he was with Swansea when he made his international début against Ireland in Dublin, with Wales victorious by 10-9. Gale played for Swansea against South Africa in November 1960, but then returned to Stradey Park. He had to wait until the England game of 1963 before winning a second cap, but then made the hooker position his own. In 1964 Wales shared the Championship with Scotland and then won it outright in 1965 and 1966, with Gale saving the game at Murrayfield in 1965 - in the closing minutes he dived over in the corner to give Wales a 12-10 win over Scotland. When New Zealand toured in 1967, he was picked as captain of Wales and astonishingly took a second-half penalty attempt and goaled it. However, Wales lost 13-6 and his captaincy was restricted to one more game - an 11-all draw with England at Twickenham in 1968. Having also played for Wales against New Zealand in 1963, South Africa in 1964 and Australia in 1968, he ended his international career with the tour to the Southern Hemisphere in 1969. In the first Test against New Zealand he replaced Jeff Young after the latter's jaw was fractured. He played in the second Test and then, against Australia at Sydney, made his 25th and last appearance, as Wales won 19-16. After retiring as a player he joined the Llanelli coaching staff.

PELE | SANTOS FC 1970s A belived match-worn jersey by arguably the greatest ever footballer Pele (1940-2022). A round neck short-sleeved t-shirt, structurally excellent without notable damage, some discolouration in areas due to folding while being displayed. Complete with felt club-badge and felt No.10 to the back, with 'Athleta' manufacturer's label internally. Provenance: purchased at auction 2016 from the effects of Cwmtwrch RFC, was on display at the club up until then, after being acquired by a club-member's relative while on business in Brazil Between 1956 and 1974 Pele played an incredible 583 times for Santos FC, scoring 569 goals. When he arrived in 1956, the club was regarded a minnow, unlikely to compete with the biggest clubs in Brazil, never mind beat European giants like Real Madrid, Benfica and AC Milan. Based in a provincial coastal city, they were overshadowed in Sao Paulo state by teams like Corinthians, Palmeiras, Portuguesa and Sao Paulo. While in Rio de Janeiro, the other centre of Brazilian football, big teams such as Botafogo, with Garrincha and Jairzinho in their side, were dominant. The cities of Rio and Sao Paulo boasted populations in the millions while Santos was a small city of 265,000, meaning the club had smaller crowds and less money. But with Pele in the side, Santos punched well above their weight. Pele's visibility on the international stage – aided by Brazil's three World Cup wins between 1958 and 1970 - meant teams from all over the planet were willing to pay big money to see him play.Every year Santos crossed the globe, playing in Sheffield and Shanghai, Barcelona and Benin, and Pele was the star attraction. If he was injured or missing from the line-up their appearance fee was slashed. He was often forced to play when he wasn't fully fit because the money they received was the only way for the club to survive – and to ensure Pele was paid what he was worth. He could have signed for any one of the top European sides - Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Paris St Germain were among those who offered fortunes for his services - but he was happy at Santos, and the Brazilian leagues were every bit as competitive as those across the Atlantic. His influence was enormous even though foreign audiences saw little of him. Clubs the world over were christened Santos in his honour. Babies took his name. Greek side Olympiakos were so proud of beating Santos they included a reference to it in their club hymn. Real Madrid pulled out of one match, because, Santos historians insist, they were afraid of being beaten. And those who saw Pele play never forgot it. Pele left Santos in 1975 for a swansong in the United States with the New York Cosmos, he was then aged 34 and had not played competitively for eight months when he signed a three-year $2.8 million contract, making him the highest-paid athlete in the world at the time

Supplied new to British actor Robin Ellis, this outstanding Interceptor II has been beautifully restored with absolute attention to detail and will continue to turn heads for another 50 years.Jensen's C-V8 replacement debuted in 1966 reviving a name first employed in the 1950s. However, several of the firm's traditions were broken in that the design was outsourced to Carrozzeria Touring and the bodies made of steel not glass fibre. Early shells were built in Italy, by Vignale, prior to production being established at Jensen's Kelvin Way plant in West Bromwich. Power came from a 6,276cc (383ci) Chrysler V8, driving through either a 4-speed manual or 3-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission to an LSD Salisbury rear axle. Specification included electric windows, reclining seats, wood-rim steering wheel, radio with twin speakers, electric clock and reversing lights. Production of the Interceptor II (occasionally called the Mk.II or Series II) commenced in October 1969 and lasted for two years. This particular car has a chassis prefix, #123, so was one of 694 right-hand drive, UK-cars powered by the E-Series 383ci V8 generating around 330bhp. It was first registered in the spring of 1970 and supplied new to British actor, Robin Ellis, best known for playing the leading role in the BBC series, Poldark, based on the novels of Winston Graham. Purchased for just under £8,000 or the equivalent of £150,000 in today’s money, the Jensen was a serious car for special customers.Several enthusiastic owners enjoyed the Jensen over the years until 2015 when the decision was made to completely restore it. The car's condition today is testament to the outstanding workmanship of the specialist team commissioned to complete the restoration and we understand that this glorious long-legged GT performs as well as it looks. The provenance and history of the Jensen is supported by a large history file containing the factory pre-sale inspection documents and paperwork which confirms that its first owner, Robin Adair Ellis, took delivery of the car on 6th May 1970. Also within the file is a detailed account of the restoration with supporting documentation, the current V5C ready for transfer or export, old MOT Certificates, the Heritage Certificate and a wealth of invoices for care and maintenance over the years, with the most recent service carried out in January 2023. Although exempt, the current MOT is valid until 1 February 2024.Finished in a lovely shade of very pale grey, the Jensen continues to attract all the right attention and, as a well restored and very well-maintained example, should only require basic maintenance. A rare blend of Italian styling, an American engine and British craftsmanship, these big GTs are comfortable and relatively practical with rear seats and a decent boot. It’s a beautiful British classic that will undoubtedly be the talking point at any classic car show or event the new owner wishes to take it to.SpecificationMake: JENSENModel: INTERCEPTOR IIYear: 1970Chassis Number: 1233736Registration Number: SUX 879HTransmission: AutomaticDrive Side: Right-hand DriveMake: RHDInterior Colour: BlackClick here for more details and images
