DICKENS, CHARLES. A.L.S. to Arthur Ryland (1807-77), solicitor, later Mayor of Birmingham. 2pp., 8vo., corner mounted, from Tavistock House, Tavistock Square, London, Monday Twentieth September 1858. He thanks Ryland for his note, but does not think that he need trouble him before he goes to Birmingham. mentioning his son Charley who ". . . wishes me to report that he passed his short holiday from Barings, in rowing and playing cricket-matches". Published in the Pilgrim Edition of the Letters of Charles Dickens. With a copy of a letter from the publishers (1975); an article about it by Professor R. D. McMaster of the University of Alberta, and a transcript.

Goldman has written in pencil "This is the rarest of all the Guides & the only one I have ever seen in original covers". Bookplate of the same. With issues in orig. wraps. for 1854, 1855, 1856 (lower cover partly loose, lacks backstrip, lacks title and pink pages of adverts.), 1857, signed by F. Lillywhite on title (lower wrap. loose), 1858 (upper cover loose), 1859 (lacks lower wrap.), 1860, 1861, two issues, (lower wrap. of autumn issue loose), 1862, two issues, 1863, two issues (winter issue lacks wraps. and last 6pp.), 1864, 1865, two issues (autumn issue with some wear to spine) and 1866 (upper wrap. detached, some wear). (19). The above is a complete set, 1848-66 (minus the second issue of the 21st edition of 1865). A more detailed description may be had on application.

Second Edition, Dean and Munday, n.d. (1840). Two copies, one in orig. wraps (dust-soiled with short tear to upper cover, backstrip repaired) (the only known copy thus); the other in orig. cloth gilt, a.e.g. 103 x 70mm. Both copies in green cloth box, spine gilt, bookplate of E. D. R. Eagar on verso of lid. (2)

A late Victorian carved and ebonised oak cased longcase clock, the arched and blind carved hood with twin pilasters flanking arched brass dial with Tempest Fugit medallion to the dial, width 12ins., cast dolphinian and cherub corner spandrels, silvered dial with Arabic and Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds dial and pierced blue steel hands, the four pillar weight driven three train eight day movement striking on a spring and playing eight bells with full repeat, the case with blind carved panelled door and further blind carved box base raised on bracket feet, height 228cm

A mahogany drinkers and smokers compendium, late 19th century, of rectangular form the top lifting to reveal a fitted interior on slide containing a set of cut glass decanters glasses, plated cigar lighter and ashtrays, above two short drawers for cigars and playing cards, all on tray base with splay legs, 88cm high.
Japy Freres & Cie, Paris A 19TH-CENTURY ORMOLU-MOUNTED PAINTED ALABASTER MANTEL CLOCK having a pine cone finial to the two-handled urn surmount, the body having spearhead-centred rosette finials to the scrolling side ornament, on a broadening rectangular section base, the sloping front having two painted panels depicting putti resting upon clouds, on four turned brass feet, the movement, striking the half-hours on a bell, stamped 'JAPY FRERES & CIE/EXPOSITION 1855 - GRANDE MED. D'HONNEUR', numbered L1828, the dial having a painted chapter ring (worn ) with separately enamelled Roman numerals framing a painted scene with a female musician playing a wind instrument for a dancing cherub, 39cm, (15.3in) high (sold with two keys plus pendulum).
