HENDRIX - BAND OF GYPSYS - The critically acclaimed live album was the first Jimi Hendrix release without the supporting members of the Jimi Hendrix experience. This copy (2406 002, Ex+/Ex) is the original issue of the UK release in 1970. It features the 'puppet sleeve' which was later withdrawn amidst a degree of controversy as the four, unflattering likenesses of Hendrix, John Peel, Bob Dylan and Brian Jones seemingly had no connection to each other or the record. Eventually, this cover was replaced by the more familiar picture of Jimi playing the guitar live. Noel Rockmore (American/Louisiana, 1928-1995) , "David Amram, Composer", 1961, watercolor on paper, signed, dated, titled and localized "Fire Island" lower center, inscribed "Summer" upper right, 10 in. x 13 1/4 in., framed; ACCOMPANIED BY Life magazine article "Music-Making Swinger Close Up - David Amram, A Rising American Composer", by Diana Lurie. Note: David Amram is a world-renowned composer, multi-instrumentalist and author. Lifelong friend of Noel Rockmore, Amram and the artist met while young children on the shores of Harvey Cedars, New Jersey. Their paths would cross again when they both attended Putney School in Vermont, where Amram was in the same grade as Rockmore’s younger sister. At the time when the work offered here was created, Rockmore, when not in New Orleans, would frequent New York and visit Amram who was “at the heart of the ‘Beat’ movement with Alan Ginsburg, Larry Rivers, Jack Kerouac and many others.” Together, they would take trips to Fire Island where this watercolor was likely painted. In the early 1950s, Amram started his musical career playing the French horn in the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. An influential composer, Amram wrote the musical scores for films such as Splendor in the Grass and The Manchurian Candidate as well as the score for the Arthur Miller play After the Fall. From 1964-1966, he was Lincoln Center Theatre’s Composer and Music Director, and in 1966 he was the first New York Philharmonic Composer in Residence. Amram also authored three memoirs about his life, work, and collaborations with Jack Kerouac. Currently, he is still composing and working on a string orchestra version of his Greenwich Village Portraits. Ref.: David Amram - Noel Rockmore. Dir. Rich and Tee Marvin. Perf. Africa, Guinea/Sierra Leone, Bassa Loma peoples, ca. 1900 CE. A hand-carved wood drum with five high relief abstract visages featured around the body, stylized raised arms or sceptors between these faces, all against a ground of raised horizontal bands - this pattern mirrored on the five ridged legs positioned beneath each noble countenance. Strong natural fibers secure the animal skin drumhead to large pegs on the upper section. Size: 18.20" W at widest point x 25.5" H (46.2 cm x 64.8 cm)Drums are among the most significant forms of material culture in Africa, serving as both musical instruments as well as works of sculptural art created for ceremonial purposes including story-telling, dances, rituals, and communication of messages. The playing of percussive instruments transferred over the Atlantic to the Americas where African slaves continued to use drums for such purposes. As time went on, the rhythmic techniques involved also influenced Afro-Cuban as well as African-American musical genres. Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970. Condition: Tears, losses, and surface wear to drumhead skin as shown. Two side pegs are loose/removeable. Drum shows stable age cracks, the largest about 12" long running from peg to lower end. General expected surface wear, areas of encrustation, and losses to drum body and legs as shown. West Africa, Benin, ca. 19th century CE. A cast bronze "palace" plaque depicting a mudfish legged king (oba) holding a wild cat in each hand, flanked by a pair of attendants holding similar felines and playing flutes, created via the cire perdue (lost wax) technique with incised details. The king wears a high beaded choker, multistrand necklace, beaded cap headdress w/ pendants and a cross finial, beads and/or scarification marks on his torso and arms, a hip wrap decorated with three masks. Custom stand. Size: 12.875" W x 12.5" H (32.7 cm x 31.8 cm); 14.5" H (36.8 cm) on stand. The Oba's palace in Benin was comprised of an extensive array of buildings and courtyards as well as the setting for royal ancestral altars and elaborate court ceremonial rituals, many of which were depicted on relief bronze/brass plaques. According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art's catalogue entitled "Royal Art of Benin: The Perls Collection" the only historical reference to these plaques was a 17th century eyewitness description of the palace complex by Olfert Dapper which reads as follows: "It is divided into many magnificent palaces, houses, and apartments of the courtiers, and comprises beautiful and long square galleries, about as large as the exchange at Amsterdam, but one larger than another, resting on wooden pillars, from top to bottom covered with cast copper, on which are engraved the pictures of their war exploits and battles, and kept very clean." (quoted in Roth 1968: 160). Contrary to Dapper's account, these plaques were not engraved but rather cast in relief with details incised in the wax model. Provenance: Ex-private New Jersey Collection Condition: Losses and surface wear commensurate with age. Nice patina. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #120079
Native American, Arizona, Chiricahua or Western Apache groups (Apache tribe), ca. early 20th century CE. A bright and colorful group of seven playing cards made from rawhide, each with hand painted designs based on the Spanish deck (which is different from the modern bridge deck most of us are probably familiar with). All are court cards, depicting figures who are based on Spanish depictions of monarchs and knights, but in the Apache style. Size of each card: 2.3" W x 3.5" H (5.8 cm x 8.9 cm)From the 1580s, southwestern US and northern Mexican tribes in contact with the Spaniards knew about paper playing cards, and they became popular with the native people. In the mid-1800s, when hostilities between the US and Mexico made border trade more difficult, local tribes began to manufacture rawhide playing cards, a practice that continued until the 1930s. Rawhide was both more available than paper and more durable, making it better suited to the nomadic lifestyle of these Apache groups. See similar examples at the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian (6/4597). Provenance: Ex-Vaught Collection, Atlanta, GA Condition: All have some signs of fading/wear from use but designs are very clear. #120271
