LeRoy Neiman (American, 1921-2012) Del Carroll, Polo Acrylic on canvas, 26” x 21 ¼” Signed, dated ’59 $90,000. – 120,000. Inducted into the Polo Hall of Fame in 2003 with the nickname “Mr. Speed,” Del Carroll was one of the greatest offensive players of his era. First rated 8 goals in 1949, he held the distinction for 10 years; he attained a 9-goal rating in the arena. He eventually started training Thoroughbreds for his friends and fellow polo players, culminating with a win in the 1972 Preakness Stakes. Magasin (registered name) was bred for Thoroughbred racing rather than polo and was owned by Michael Phipps until the age of 5. At that point Carroll had shown interest in the horse and Phipps proposed a challenge that Carroll could have the horse if he made a polo pony out of him. Magazin (polo name) immediately took to the sport and won the Hartman Award for Best Playing Pony in 1972. He was elected to the Polo Hall of Fame in 2004.

An early 19th Century Chinese export lacquered box, with fitted boxes and playing card trays to the interior, one containing approximately one hundred and twenty mother-of-pearl counters, mostly with armorials or initialled RN, the box 28 x 37cm (11 x 14.5 in) One corner of the lid has come apart with consequent losses of lacquer. there are approximately 66 long rectangular counters, 24 rectangular, 5 various oval, 11 large oval, 12 cicular and 5 of fish shape.
LORD CHELMSFORD's SWORD. A Grenadier Guards sword by Henry Wilkinson of Pall Mall London, un-numbered with Lord Chelmsford's family crest on the blade. Gothic hilt with extremely clean and crisp 32" slightly curved blade, contained in a black leather scabbard with brass mounts. the 1822 pattern sword has VR and Grenadier Guards Flaming Grenade device, which is also inset in the gilt hilt guard. Provenance. Purchased as Lot 38 of the DNW Sale of the 14th December 2006. Frederic Thesiger was first the Lord then 2nd Baron Thesiger. Born 31/05/1827 he died of a seizure whilst playing snooker at the United Services Club on the 9th April 1905. Educated at Eton his Military Service was to begin, with a failure in 1844 to purchase a Commission in the Grenadier Guards. He was successful in joining the Rifle Brigade later that year. Then in 1845 he purchased a position, in the "Grenadier Guards. He served in the Crimea receiving the Crimea Medal, Turkish and Sardinian Medals also the Order of Medjidie 5th Class (MID). Then in the Indian Mutiny as a Lt Col 95th (Derbyshire) Regt (MID) later as an ADC or DAAG. Again in the Abbassynian War he was at Magdala and awarded a CB also made ADC to the Queen.. He met and befriended Sir Henry Bartle Frere, during his service. In South Africa with the local rank of Lt General in 1878. He successfully completed the 9th Cape War in 1878. The Disasters and final then Victory at the burning of Ulundi, are all well known. It was this last gasp victory before Garnet Wolseley took command, that partially rescued his reputation. ( 1879 he was awarded the GCB) His part in Zulu Dawn was played by Peter O'toole . He is buried in Brompton Cemetery London. See Illustration

An 18th/19th c Continental Enamel Box:Fully enamelled box with Tavern scene to the top of men playing backgammon,the sides and bottom with masks and floral motifs,opening to reveal a windmill scene to the inner lid and a ruin amidst trees to the inside, the hinges attached to a gilded Fleur De Lis pattern edging. CONDITION REPORT: in good original condition,the lower Fleur De Lis edging has corrosion and is a dull colour and has lost its gilding.
