CHAPLIN CHARLES: (1889-1977) English Film Comedian, Academy Award winner, & CHAPLIN FAMILY MEMBERS Signed and inscribed oblong 10.5 x 7 page by Charles Chaplin and by five more members of Chaplin´s family. Individually and boldly signed by Charles Chaplin (`To André Bernard. Thank you for a wonderful time - Charles Chaplin´), Oona Chaplin (1925-1991) Fourth wife of Chaplin 1943-77, and daughter of American Nobel Prize in Literature Eugene O´Neill, and four of her children with Charles, Vicky Chaplin (1951- ) British Circus Performer, Eugène Chaplin (1953- ) Swiss Engineer, Jane Chaplin and Annette Chaplin. Most have added inscriptions to Bernard too. Professionally matted in purple, beneath a 7 x 9 unsigned photograph showing Charles Chaplin alongside André Bernard, framed in gilt wood, and glazed to an overall size of 21 x 14. (52 x 35 cm). Also including Manitas de Plata (1921-2014) French Flamenco Guitarist. Signed postcard photograph of Manitas de Plata. VG £400-600André Bernard - French Manager of Manitas de Plata, French Guitarist. Bernard planned and hosted an exceptional evening meeting between Charles Chaplin and Manitas de plata, together with Bernard and Chaplin family members. The musical evening took place in the Chaplin residence on 23rd October 1969 with Manitas playing his flamenco guitar and Chaplin playing the piano. Josephine Chaplin would later say it was the last time she found her father so happy.
RAIMU: (1883-1946) His real name was Jules Auguste Muraire. French Actor. Well remembered for playing César in the Marseilles Trilogy. Signed and inscribed attractive original set of seven 4 x 6 photographs, all of them showing a young Raimu in different close portrait poses. The seven images have been individually carefully affixed to slightly larger cards, framed in wood and glazed to an overall of 32.5 x 8. Raimu writes the inscription over six of the photographs `To Rip - Thanking - for my first great success - The more it changes.. - Cordially - Raimu´, starting on the second image to the left and concluding with his signature `Raimu´ to the seventh and last to the right. Together with Andrée Spinelly (1887-1966) French Actress who played the main role in the premiere of Plus ça Change in 1915. Signed postcard photograph; also including a bold ink signature to a grid 5 x 3 page. G, 3 £250-350Plus ça Change ! (1915) was the first success of Raimu in France after his return from the WWI front in March 1915. Georges Rip (1884-1941) French Author of Plus ça Change!. The first stage performance took place on 7th September 1915 at the Michel Theatre. The main role was played by Rip´s muse Andrée Spinelly who was having a sentimental relationship with Raimu since a year before, although she managed to include her new lover in the cast.
LE VIGAN ROBERT: (1900-1972) Born Robert Coquillaud. French Actor. An open fascist and collaborator with Nazis during the occupation. Le Vigan escaped while playing Children of Paradise (1945). Sentenced to forced labour for ten years, was released in 1949 and went in exile to Argentina, where he died in poverty. Rare A.L.S., Robert, one page, small 8vo, n.p., 18th March 1970, to André Bernard, in French. Le Vigan refers to his correspondent´s letter just received together with `François´ letter´, being François Truffaut, and stating `..he has written to me about his work which will be edited by Gallimard. All is fair-play.. I was fearing the exhaustion where you sink! It is too much my friend!´ further thanking Bernard for the Von Stroheim received. Together with an extremely rare 7 x 9 signed photograph of Le Vigan. Signed in fountain pen ink to a dark area of the photograph. Signed photographs of Le Vigan are very rare, as Le Vigan himself said that when he escaped to Argentina he could not take any photograph with him. Accompanied by a vintage unsigned postcard photograph of Le Vigan. G, 3 £100-150 Children of Paradise (1945) was a film directed by Marcel Carné. Le Vigan was replaced by Pierre Renoir (1885-1952) French Actor, son of Pierre Auguste Renoir the famous Painter and brother of film Director Jean Renoir. Pierre Renoir was the first to hold the role of Georges Simenon´s character Inspector Jules Maigret. François Truffaut (1932-1984) French film Director. Truffaut was in contact with Le Vigan during his exile in Argentina. He tried to rehabilitate Le Vigan´s name in France and to convince him, without luck, to return to France.
GLAZUNOV ALEXANDER: (1865-1936) Russian Composer and music Teacher. He was the direct successor of most of the Group of five Russian composer´s legacy. Director of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory 1905-28, he left the Soviet Union in 1928 and never returned. His best-known student was Dmitri Shostakovich. A rare 8.5 x 11.5 signed and inscribed large card photograph, the image depicting the Russian composer seated in a half-length pose, playing his piano. Signed and inscribed by Glazunov in bold black fountain pen ink to a clear area of the image, stating `To the deeply sensitive and musical pianist, Liubov Nikolaevna Slavianova, from a sincere admirer of her talent and human qualities. Yours cordially, A. Glazunov.´ in Cyrillic, also dated beneath the inscription `Petrograd, 9th May 1917?´ in his hand. LANG ANTON : (1875-1938) German Actor. Most remembered for playing several times Jesus Christ role in the Oberammergau Passion play at the Bavarian Festival between 1900 and 1934. An attractive clipped postcard depicting a portrait of Lang to the front, in his role as Jesus Christ. Boldly signed `Anton Lang´, in black ink at the base of the image, also dated 1910 in his hand. MADAME SANS-GÊNE: (1753-1835) Catherine Lefebvre, born Catherine Hübscher, Duchess of Dantzig. Wife of French Marshal François Joseph Lefebvre. Best known by her nickname of “Madame Sans-Gêne” attributed to her by the dramatist Victorien Sardou. An excellent set of documents including a rare D.S., `Duchess de Dantzig´, at the base of the letter and beneath an annotation in her hand `A voucher as receipt´, one page, 4to, Paris, 4th October 1822, in French. The Duchess acknowledges having received 4000 Fcs from M. Malraison as payment of the interest on the 150.000 Fcs loan she gave him. With tax stamps. Matted in beige, framed in wood and glazed to an overall of 10 x 12,5. Together with François Joseph Lefebvre (1755-1820) French Marshal of Napoleon. Duc of Dantzig. D.S., Lefebvre, with one line annotation in his hand, one page, folio, Germany, 11th November 1796, on the printed stationery of the 11th regiment of dragons. Lefebvre in his capacity as General approves the report received from Captain Georges Collot about the troops position. Countersigned by Joseph Bouvier des Eclaz. Also including an A.L, by Marshal Lefebvre, in the third person, one page, 8vo, n.p., 26th January, n.y., to General Foy, stating `Marshal Duc of Dantzig asks Lieutenant Foy to kindly attend dinner with at home..´ With blank address leaf. Also including Jacques Faizant (1918-2006) French Cartoonist, best known for his caricatures in the newspaper Le Figaro and Match Point magazine. A colourful signed original sketch, Jacques Faizant, 13 x 10 drawing paper, the original ink drawing showing the Duc and Duchesse of Dantzig, dressing with their gala uniform and dress. Faizant has added Madame Sans-Gêne funny comment, in pencil, `And first of all, even if you are a Marshal, you have to take off your cap when you talk to your lady!´. Also including Jane Sourza (1902-1969) French Actress. Signed programme, 24 pages, 8vo, 19th October 1959, being the Victorien Sardou´s comedy Madame Sans-Gêne, with Sourza playing the main role, and signing alongside her photograph. Accompanied by original entrance tickets for the performance. Also including Victorien Sardou (1831-1909) French Playwright and Author of the historical comedy Madame Sans-Gêne (1893). A.L.S., V. Sardou, on a his personal printed stationery 4.5 x 3.5 card. Also including Gloria Swanson (1899-1983) American Actress. A good signed and inscribed 10 x 8 photograph `To Peter, Greeting, Gloria Swanson´, the image depicting Swanson in a scene of Madame Sans-Gêne (1925). A pair of 19TH CENTURY ITALIAN SCHOOL religious icons of angels playing musical instruments in a Gothic style giltwood architectural frame, 47 cm high CONDITION REPORTS First icon - chip to the pediment with resulting loss. Split running all the way through to some of the carvings in two places which possibly has meant that this has been re-glued / fixed in some way. Loss and chip to the top of the carvings. Paintwork rubbed. Various scratches and scuffs and marks throughout.
