18TH CENTURY DUTCH SCHOOL IN THE STYLE OF DAVID TENIERS; oil on board, interior scene with seated gent playing a small stringed instrument, unsigned, 23 x 18cm, framed. CONDITION REPORT: There are areas of crazing, also there are some chips particularly to the edges. Also, there are some flaking under the varnish in patches.
An early 20th century walnut card box decorated with rectangular panels within leather gilt heightened borders to sides, the hinged lid centred with a circular painted enamel plaque depicting playing cards, enclosing three compartments and four separate lidded boxes, each with enamel plaque painted with suits of playing cards, 26 x 18cm. CONDITION REPORT: The enamel plaque to the lid has several minor chips to outside border and one significant chip. Also the leather border of the lid is stained, has areas of rubbing and has one section missing in one corner. Minor dents and scratches predominantly to the front side. The wooden escutcheon has two chips. The interior is in very good condition. One of the plaques on one of the interior boxes appears to have been reglued.
A pair of Schuco felt covered musician pigs, one playing the drum, one playing the violin, also a Schuco clockwork model of Donald Duck. CONDITION REPORT: The violin for the clockwork pig is missing although there is a spare model violin present in the lot. The felt is loose in parts. Tail missing from both. Donald duck is sadly in poor condition, missing right hand, both feet are broken and missing, heavy wear throughout.
A pair of late 19th century/early 20th century Sevres porcelain vases, painted by Jean Armand with scenes of lovers observed playing music and looking at a song bird, the reverses with lake views, all on a royal blue ground, the baluster shapes with gilt metal handles and mounts, interlacing L marks, 62cm (24.25 in) high Some rubbing but otherwise Ok
Two Vienna coffee cans and saucers and a German can, the first painted in black with figure by a lake, the second painted with Siegfried leaving Brunhilde and the last a German can painted with a family playing Boules (5) Provenance: From the collection of the late Christopher Hogwood, CBE The landscape decorated can has been restored, otherwise condition is good.
Of Musical interest, five Regency coffee cans and three saucers, to include examples by Miles Mason, Ridgeway, New Hall and others (8) Provenance: From the collection of the late Christopher Hogwood, CBE The New Hall example with the woman and child playing the harp is cracked through the base.
A late 18th century pearlware mug, the cylindrical sides bearing the hand coloured print of 'Signor Gruntinelli playing a new Instrument (call'd a Swinetta)', bears Gary Atkins label, 9.5cm (3.75 in) high Matthew Darly published the original print of this subject in 1774 Provenance: From the collection of the late Christopher Hogwood, CBE
Attributed to Frederick Bouttats the Younger (Dutch, 1643-1676) Orpheus charming the animals oil on panel 76 x 100cm (30 x 39in) Provenance: From an Oxfordshire country house. The present painting depicts the mythological hero Orpheus charming animals with his singing and playing. Panel constructed of four boards in horizontal alignment, fabric canvas attached to reverse for support. Original panel joins are sound but there are two large splits in panel running horizontally. Paint layer in good condition, with a few small losses. Retouching along splits. Old yellowed varnish. Frame - bronze paint has been applied over original gilding.
Sir Abraham Hume after Thomas Orde (British, 1749-1838) A concert in Cambridge publihsed by Bretherton engraving, in a maple frame 27½ x 33cm (11 x 13in) Provenance: From the collection of the late Christopher Hogwood, CBE Literature: Illustrated on the front cover of 'Music in Eighteenth-Century England; Essays in memory of Charles Cudworth', edited by Christopher Hogwood and Richard Luckett (pub November 2008, Cambridge University Press) The present engraving shows a recital given in 1767. From left to right the musicians are Pieter Hellendaal, John Keymer, John Ranish, Alexis Magito, John Wynne, George Noelli (playing the pantaleon) and David Wood. A little browning and discolouration to the cream edges, and there is a fold in the paper running across the middle. In a maple frame.
Thomas Orde, Lord Bolton (British, 1740-1807) Mr Sharp playing the Cello at Cambridge, 1777 inscribed with title verso pen and ink 20½ x 18cm (8 x 7in) Provenance: From the collection of the late Christopher Hogwood, CBE Exhibited: The Covent Garden Gallery, Russell Street, London The paper has three vertical folds - one small tear at the bottom under his leg, some discolouration and browning. Grey pencil marks along the bottom edge. One foxing spot to the righ of the easel. Under glass and may be stuck down.
German School (circa 1740) Two musicians playing the flute and clavichord, circa 1740 watercolour 9 x 15½cm (4 x 6in) Provenance: Dudley Snelgrove FSA; Sotheby's, 19th November 1993, lot 184, where acquired by the late owner From the collection of the late Christopher Hogwood, CBE Literature: Jacket illustration for 'De Clavicordio IV' (pub. 2000) - the proceedings of biennial conferences at the International Centre for Clavichord Studies, of which Christopher Hogwood was co-director. Jacket illustration of Christopher Hogwood's 'Carl Friedrich Christian Fasch: Complete Keyboard Works, Vol. 1' (pub. 2011) This present watercolour is interesting as it shows a clavichord being played as part of an ensemble: due to its quiet sound, this instrument is usually associated with solo or private playing. Mounted, unframed, colours are good.
French School (18th Century) Portait of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart playing a double-manual harpsichord inscribed lower centre "Mr Mozart", probably done by an amateur hand from life, circa 1778-1782 watercolour 26 x 20cm (10 x 8in) Provenance: J and J Ubrano Rare Books and Manuscripts, Massachusetts, 1991, where acquired by the late owner. From the collection of the late Christopher Hogwood, CBE Unframed, slipped in mount , a little discolouration to the background but colours are fine.
Isaac Oliver (French, c. 1565-1617) A girl playing the virginals bears initials "ARH" lower right pen and brown ink with brown and grey washes 12 x 11cm (5 x 4in) Provenance: Richard Houlditch (Lugt 2214/4), see collector's stamp; Villiers David, his Sale, Christie's, 19th November, 1985, lot 199; with Colin Hunter; Sotheby's London, 11th July 1991, Lot 13, where acquired by the late owner. From the collection of the late Christopher Hogwood, CBE Literature: Jacket illustration for "The Keyboard in Baroque Europe", edited by Christopher Hogwood (pub 2003, Cambridge University Press) The present painting is thought to date from after Oliver's visit to Venice in 1596 - this drawing is considered to be the earliest such musical scene in English art. Condition appears fine, perhaps a little discolouration around the cream edges.
§ Sir John Verney (British, 1913-1993) The King's Lynn Festival Table - a small decorated table with a scene of an orchestra of naked maidens playing a concerto at the King's Lynn Festival, Norfolk signed lower left "Verney" oil on panel 58 x 59cm (23 x 23in) Provenance: From the collection of the late Christopher Hogwood, CBE Exhibited: Gainsborough's House, Sudbury, Suffolk, Sir John Verney Memorial Exhibition, 26 November 1994-22 January 1995. John Verney, painter and illustrator, film director's assistant and baronet, Yeomanry officer and parachutist, traveller and lover of most things British, especially Farnham, Surrey, was also wonderful company to his many friends, master of the ludicrous, inventor of the 'Dodo-Pad' and author of one of the best memoirs of the Second World War, "Going to the Wars". In later life he lived at Clare in Suffolk - where visitors came for Sunday lunch and he painted in a converted stable-loft - Sir John loved painting on unusual surfaces, and his tabletop "Rape of the Sabines" memorably encapsulates his characteristic irony. Condition appears fine.
A CONCERTINA, LATE 19TH C with grained rosewood frets, 48 buttons (24 x 2), green and gold patterned paper decorated dark green leather bellows, 18cm w, velvet lined rosewood case labelled FROM A HINDLEY 21 CLUMBER STREET NOTTINGHAM ++In good original condition, a little dusty, the case also good with worn detached leather strap handle. The concertina with oval aperture where there would have been a small printed trade label, now missing. The instrument appears to be in good playing condition

Dominica. 1969 photographic essays of unadopted designs for a cricket issue from the printer's record books, broadly similar to the 1968 Olympics set with 1ct, 5ct and 60ct in horizontal pairs with action scenes and the 48ct in a similar block of four; plus a 5ct vertical pair with portrait of Sir Garfield Sobers and him playing a stroke. Sobers' portrait is a disaster, bearing a marked resemblance to Bashar al-Assad
