I Zingari (“the Gypsies”) are wandering English and Australian amateur cricket clubs, the English club formed in 1845 by a group of old Harrovians, and one of the oldest cricket clubs in existence, still playing some 20 matches a year. A fine Chinese ‘eggshell’ porcelain famille rose bowl decorated with figures, four character Qianlong seal mark, Republican period (1912-1949) delicately potted with thin walls and finely detailed potting rings, the exterior with a continuous figure scene design of figures at leisure playing checkers and reading a scroll in a stylized garden scene with rocks grass and pine, the base with a band of key pattern design in iron red, the top with a similar border comprising repeating lappet form designs and repeating geometric design, the interior with a central roundel comprising a curled dragon on a cell work ground and an iron red border of repeating lappet form designs beneath two bands of continuous beads, the base with a four character Qianlong seal mark. A characteristic of eggshell porcelain is that an exterior design can be seen on the interior under a good light as is the case here." H.M.S. Doris: a fascinating handwritten diary kept by a member of her crew between August 1st 1914 and July 29th 1916, during which period the light cruiser and her crew are celebrated for having undertaken amphibious raiding operations in the Eastern Mediterranean, as well as for playing a supporting role in the Gallipoli campaign. The diary entries make reference to these events, as well as giving many other interesting insights.
