Joseph Catherwood, London A gilt bronze mantel clock, now with an associated three train musical movement, striking the hours on eight bells, the musical movement playing cotillan/ minuet/gavotte and song tunes, 43cm. Joseph Catherwood (circa 1775-1825) is little recorded but is known to have been a close associate of Aynsworth Thwaites, the leading London supplier of spring clocks at the end of the 18th century. Catherwood is recorded as working in Bunhill Row most of his life. Items bearing his name vary from watches, clocks for the Spanish and Eastern markets, as well as one of the finest longcase regulators of the late 18th century, on view in the British Museum.
