Franz Seraph von Lenbach (German, 1836-1904)A Portrait of a lady, said to be Maria von Komma playing the harpsigned and dated 'f. Lenbach / 1898' (lower right)oil on canvas98 x 123cmProvenance:By descent from the sitter, great-great-grandmother of the present ownerFootnote: According to family tradition, the sitter in the present portrait, Maria von Komma (circa 1872-1935), was aged about 25 when she sat to Lenbach. She lived between Munich and Vienna, earning her living as a musician, playing the harp, and as an artist’s model. Her striking red hair made her a popular muse for Munich artists of the time, and it has been suggested that she was at some point romantically involved with Lenbach. Maria was a painter herself. She was mostly self-taught, but she is also said to have been trained by Franz von Stuck and Lenbach himself. She later married General Ludwing von Komma, with whom she had a daughter, Gabriella Steiner-Pichler (b. 1900). The only other known portrait of a lady with a harp was painted by Lenbach in 1896, of the famous singer Lillian Sanderson (1866-1947).Condition report: 143 x 166cm framedOil on canvas which has been lined. The canvas tension is good and the picture is in plane. The paint layers are in a good, stable condition overall. There is some wear and abrasion, notable in the paler areas of the flesh.
