On Tattoo it's on 'A Million Miles Away'. There's a little bit on 'Hands Off' and 'Seventh Son Of The Seventh Son'. When I started playing it, I was going to play actively on stage; two guitar to one sax number, about that, but my interest in sax ebbed a bit. I was going through a jazz phase, very fanatical, back in 69-70. I'm going to resurrect it one of these days. Playing sax with just bass and drums; it's alright if you're Ornette Coleman, but when you've got to take your guitar off and pick up a sax...'- Rory Gallagher, Trans-Oceanic Trouser Press, 1976.Live PerformanceTaste, Beat Club, 'It's Happened Before, It'll Happen Again', 3rd February 1970, www.tiktok.com/@rorygallagherofficial/video/7195977030876302634Literature Dave Schulps and Ira Robbins, 'The Story On Rory', Trans-Oceanic Trouser Press, April/May 1976, www.roryon.com/tp.html.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Rory Gallagher: An Eccleshall Custom-Made Electric Guitar,1970s, Serial no. A198 on four-screw neckplate, natural finish, bound top, two pickups with two controls, selector and switch, six-saddle bridge, extended black/white pickguard, solid mahogany back and sides, scarf joint, bound neck with Indian rosewood fingerboard, snowflake markers, bound headstock with black veneer, logo and six-in-line Kluson Deluxe tuners, in shaped, plush-lined hardshell case with a Rory Gallagher Leeds Univents Backstage Pass for 4th October (1980),guitar 39 1/2in (100cm) longFootnotes:Luthier Chris Eccleshall (1948-2020) was Rory's favoured guitar technician throughout the 1970s and 80s. With a career spanning over three decades, Eccleshall established himself as a master of his craft, by combining traditional luthiery techniques with innovative design approaches. Eccleshall's deep understanding of tone and acoustics allowed him to produce guitars that stood out in both studio recordings and live performances, so it was no surprise that Rory trusted him to take care of his beloved and battered trademark Fender Stratocaster (See lot 62). Over the years, Eccleshall worked on the famous Strat at least 15 times to help maintain and enhance its performance. This included a re-fret and a neck change, as well as modifications such as disabling the Strat's vibrato mechanism using a wooden block, (a modification he later also applied to Eric Clapton's 'Blackie')Aside from his work on Rory's 1961 Strat, Eccleshall also created some custom guitars for Rory that complimented his musical style and sound, see lots 57-61.His innovative designs, coupled with his reputation for quality, made Eccleshall a sought-after figure in the guitar-making world and his clientele outside of Rory included Pete Townshend, David Bowie, Peter Hook, and Mark Knopfler among many others.'Somewhere in the very early '70s, Rory and Chris connected... It meant so much to my brother that another craftsman could appreciate his guitar-craft and comprehend the fine detail Rory required. Key to Rory's search was the 'true' amplification of his acoustic instruments, in particular, when endeavouring to have his Italian mandolin playing 'Goin' To My Hometown' (See lot 2). At first played through a microphone, the mandolin was competing with the hand-clapping and foot-stomping fans tattooing out the underlying rhythm of the ballad leading to the maxed-out microphone squealing with feedback. So Chris produced a solid, electric mandolin for Rory – a first of its kind, this allowed my brother to be more ambitious in both his stage and studio use of the instrument. The standardised limitation of 1970s guitar electronics and woodcraft saw Rory commission Chris to construct further instruments incorporating my brother's ideals, a fan of the Telecaster body many were moulded into that fashion.'- Dónal Gallagher. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Rory Gallagher: A Vox Mark XII Special 12-String Electric Guitar,1967,Serial no. 76414 stamped to neckplate, made in England, teardrop-shaped body with black finish, three pickups with four controls, three-way pickup selector and six push-button controls, tremolo tailpiece, battery backplate, circular padding to back, unbound neck with Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, dot markers, headstock with decal and original Vox six-a-side tuners, in Fender tweed gig bag with lead,CITES 24GBA10E11PBV,guitar 41 1/2in (105cm) longFootnotes:'I've got this old Vox 12-string from the days of Beatlemania...'- Rory GallagherRory would have acquired this distinctive guitar as he was a big Brian Jones fan. Brian was the first person Rory ever saw playing slide guitar and that made a serious impression on him.Speaking about this guitar, Rory was quoted in Music Maker magazine, June 1978 issue: 'I have another very singular one. It is a Vox Phantom (sic), Brian Jones used to use one a while ago. The body is shaped like an egg. The one I have has 12 strings and has supplies like mid-range adaptors, fuzz and repeat built-in. The only difficult part is the placement of the push button switches. They are placed on the rhythm plate and therefore they are very much in the way during playing. I would like to change that because otherwise, it is a very good instrument. Guitars with 12 strings are very suitable for rhythm guitar work.''I've got this old Vox 12-string from the days of Beatlemania, which I've had for a couple of months. It's got an out-of-phase switch, you pull this up and it turns on this whole section. This I've turned into a tone control instead of a repeat tremolo thing, which isn't quite effective. The fuzz is quite good, but fuzz on a 12-string is unnecessary. Treble, you need, bass you need, top boost you might need. The mid boost is very good, flick this on and you get three positions which I haven't seen on any guitar yet, but if you had this on a Stratocaster...the only thing is, with a battery inside it and a surge of power, you're a little bit up and down on batteries. But I'll use this for recording, I've used it on stage once or twice.' - Rory Gallagher, Guitar magazine, 1978.Literature 'Rory Gallagher', Music Maker magazine, June 1978 issue, translated by Iris Rasenberg, www.roryon.com/mm678-315.htmlJohn Dalton,'I try to keep the balance between madness and technique', Guitar magazine, September 1978, www.roryon.com/balance384.htmlVox Mark XII:The Vox Mark XII guitar, famously known as the 'Teardrop' guitar, gained prominence in the 1960s, particularly through its association with British rock music. The guitar was a radical departure from traditional guitar designs, created by a company who were better known for amps. The unique shape of the guitar made it lightweight and comfortable to play. It was popularised by Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones, who helped cement its place in rock history. Known for its jangly, bright tone and stylish look, the Mark XII became a symbol of the British Invasion era. Today, it remains a beloved collectable, celebrated for its role in shaping the sound and image of 1960s rock music. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: YY Subject to CITES regulations when exporting items outside of the UK, see clause 13.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

An England Intermediate team shirt circa 1970-72, bears No. 7 to the back. Trevor Francis was playing for Birmingham at the time.*SOLD WITH A LETTER OF CONFIRMATION STATING THE ABOVE LOT HAS COME FROM THE ESTATE OF THE LATE TREVOR FRANCIS*The estate has stated "I would say that Trevor wasn’t into collecting shirts / memorabilia as such himself. He preferred to keep only items which meant something significant to him personally. Specifically, he did speak about the shirt swap with Maradona and I remember on one occasion he thought he had mislaid it and was very concerned at the time, but he did locate it. Trevor bought and sold many homes and his shirts etc were never displayed and basically stored in suitcases or plastic crates. The Maradona shirt was a game swapped shirt, and from memory, I think there is a mud stain on the shirt. With regard to Zidane and Rivaldo, and on the basis of them meaning something to Trevor, I believe they were game worn shirts.I can’t give you any complete guarantee on the shirts but I do think he would not have retained them all those years ( and stored and transported them through many house moves !) if they didn’t mean a lot to him personally and were of significance."
