Attributed to Fritz Heckert of Petersdorf, a Historismus enamelled glass jug, the green glass body decorated with playing cards 40.50cm (16in) Other Notes: This late 19th century Historismus jug is enamelled with what appear to be four playing card Queens. It has been suggested that the Queens - a Queen of hearts, a Queen of diamonds and two Queens of spades (notably no Queen of clubs) - could be the four daughters of the Count of Provence, (Raymond Berenguer IV). Marguerite married Louis IX of France; Eleanor, married Henry II of England; Beatrice married King of the Two Sicilies and Sanchia, the youngest daughter, married the Earl of Cornwall - brother of Henry III and elected King of Germany. Sanchia died before her husband was crowned King of Germany and this may explain why the Queen of diamonds does not have a crown. These four sisters helped establish the principal royal families of Europe - a reason why they might be depicted on this important piece of Historismus glass and why it may well have been decorated by the master glazier, Fritz Heckert of Petersdorf (1837-1887).
