A George III mahogany card tableThe hinged rectangular top enclosing a baize lined playing surface above a frieze drawer, standing on club legs with pad feet. 76 cm wide. CONDITION REPORTS: Some scuffing and scratching, some fading, baize replaced, some old woodworm damage to undertier, general wear.
A large early 20th Century pedestal vase and cover decorated with hand painted cartouche panels depicting figures playing music and dancing within a garden setting, both flanked with pink ribbons meeting under the handles with scrolls and acanthus leaves, the handles formed as goat heads, the domed cover with a pierced border and topped with three large encrusted flowers, bears spurious cross swords mark, height 65cm, S/D and staple repaired.
A 1930s Permarec floor standing record recorder in figured walnut case, the hinged lid opening to reveal a turn table and a Dralowid indicator width 60cm, together with a floor standing chrome microphone and two aluminium cannisters containing blank ebonite discs and sleeves (2)Permarec recording discs were a soft recording layer on an alumium glass base and once recorded they had to be baked in the oven for two to three hours before playing, introduced by Musikon in 1933 the company went into liquidation in 1937.
Emanuele Caroni (Italian 1826 -1876) L'Amour Vainqueuer de la Force, a 19th Century Italian carved carrara marble sculpture of cupid taming the lion, the winged figure playing a lyre with a quiver of arrows on his back whilst seated upon the back of a recumbant lion licking cupids foot, signed to the reverse E. Caroni F. 1867, height 105cm x width 92cm, on associated stepped plinth, width 106cm, minor losses.Notes:This work was one of three sculptures entered by E Caroni into the Exposition Universalle, at the Paris Salon in 1867, alongside Esclave au Marche and Ophelie. Caroni was awarded a medal for these works under the category of 'Sculpteurs et graveurs en medailles du sur pierres fines etrangers'. It is believed to have been acquired by the Firmstone family in the late 19th or early 20th Century.Emanuele Caroni was born in Roncate, Como, and went to the Brera Academy, Milan, completing his studies under Lorenzo Bartolini. His work tended to be of a funerary nature and appears to have been retailed by the Barzanti or Bazzanti galleries in Florence. He became politically active, joining the movement for the independence of Italy and took part in the famous 'Five Days of Milan'. He subsequently established himself in Florence and became hugely productive, his works being shown in Italy, France and America. His repertoire includes 'Schiava alla Vendita', gold medal winner at the Florence Exhibition in 1861, The Columbus Monument in Philadelphia, La Prima Gioventu subsequently acquired by the National Gallery, Washington, D.C.Literature:M. A Victorian rosewood music box, bells in sight and drum, playing six airs. Cylinder length 27 cm, case 61 cm x 34 cm x 26 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The lid has surface scratches throughout and patches of veneer missing to left and right hand edges. The ebonised underside of the lid has small scratches and the ebonised finish is rubbed through and flaking. On the exterior of the body the right had side has a 12 cm split from to edge to handle. All feet have scuff marks. The front left foot has a small splice missing. The comb has the tips of five teeth missing.
A silver playing card casket, inscribed "Bridge", London 1900. Width 11.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Weight 440 grams. Makers initials rubbed but lion and date letter in good order. The lid and left hand side have some small knocks. The the right hand side has a visible dent. The interior has a red watered silk lining. The hallmarks readable on front and rear of box. There is no wooden liner.
